Trypanosoma (Herpetosoma) lewisi is a cosmopolitan parasite of rodents strongly linked to the human dispersal of Rattus spp. from Asia to the rest of the world. This species is highly phylogenetically related to trypanosomes from other rodents (T. lewisi-like), and sporadically infects other mammals. T. lewisi may opportunistically infect humans, and has been considered an emergent rat-borne zoonosis associated to poverty. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) changes were studied in livers of rats inoculated with Trypanosoma lewisi, Trypanosoma rhodesiense, Trypanosoma congolense and Trypanosoma brucei. The amounts of an antigen to primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) which occur in subcellular fractions of Trypanosoma rhodesiense and T. lewisi correlate positively with the oligomycin-sensitive (OS) ATPase activity of these fractions. This result is consistent with the mitochondrial ATPase association of the antigen in mammalian and other cells. Higher levels of OS-ATPase and of PBC antigen in T. lewisi accord with a more extensive mitochondrial development in this species.

We analysed the proteinase profiles in nine Trypanosoma (Herpetosoma) rangeli strains from distinct geographical regions, three T. (Schizotrypanum) cruzi reference strains and in T. (Herpetosoma) lewisi, T. (Herpetosoma) musculi and T. (Megatrypanum) conorhini samples by detection of enzyme activity on SDS-PAGE containing co-polymerized gelatin as substrate. Blood samples from rats infected with Trypanosoma lewisi give normal values for lipoid phosphorus, lecithin, CO(2) combining capacity, and liver glycogen. When these results are compared with the results of similar experiments with T. equiperdum infections, on the basis of the concentration of trypanosomes in the blood, it is found that the pathogenicity of the latter organism does not depend upon its numbers as affecting the blood, but that it must be in some other way injurious to the host. Whether the injury is due to a true toxin, an endotoxin, or mechanical interference is not yet known.
