A cross-sectional study was conducted in Mbarara district, south-western Uganda in May 2012 to determine the burden of African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) in the semi-intensive dairy production systems where pyrethroid acaricides are frequently used in the control of tick-borne diseases (TBDs). A total of 295 cattle blood samples were taken and analysed using a single pair of primers previously designed to amplify internal transcribed spacer (ITS1) of trypanosome ribosomal deoxyribonucleic acid (rDNA). A structured questionnaire was administered to 55 participating livestock farmers to generat

BACKGROUND: African Animal Trypanosomiasis (AAT) is a widespread disease of livestock in Nigeria and presents a major constraint to rural economic development. The Jos Plateau was considered free from tsetse flies and the trypanosomes they transmit due to its high altitude and this trypanosomiasis free status attracted large numbers of cattle-keeping pastoralists to the area. The Jos Plateau now plays a major role in the national cattle industry in Nigeria, accommodating approximately 7% of the national herd, supporting 300,000 pastoralists and over one million cattle. During the past two deca

Various chemotherapeutic regimes were used to control trypanosomiasis in 3,000 Boran cattle on an estate on the Kenya coast. Recently the therapeutic use of isometamidium by the intravenous route was adopted to treat individual trypanosome-infected cattle. This was in order to overcome tissue reactions encountered after intramuscular injection and also to control a "thin cow" syndrome attributed to chronic trypanosomiasis. Toxic side effects were eliminated by careful attention to the intravenous technique which was safely used in calves, pregnant cattle and bulls. Weekly blood sampling and tr

BACKGROUND: Livestock trypanosomiasis, transmitted mainly by tsetse flies of the genus Glossina is a major constraint to livestock health and productivity in the sub-Saharan Africa. Knowledge of the prevalence and intensity of trypanosomiasis is important in understanding the epidemiology of the disease. The objectives of this study were to (a) assess the prevalence and intensity of trypanosome infections in cattle, and (b) to investigate the reasons for the heterogeneity of the disease in the tsetse infested districts of Amuru and Nwoya, northern Uganda.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was

Bovine trypanosomiasis is a disease of cattle. In sub-Saharan Africa, the disease mean prevalence estimates are unknown in most endemic countries. We therefore performed a meta-analysis with the aim of estimating national mean prevalence of bovine trypanosomiasis in endemic countries across sub-Saharan Africa. Relevant articles reporting bovine trypanosomiasis prevalence were retrieved through systematic literature search and scanning of articles reference-lists. Eligibility criteria included that articles reported sample size, prevalence, and diagnostic technique adopted. Overall, data from 1

Following confirmed cases of trypanosomiasis ('nagana') and reports of trypanosome-attributable deaths among local cattle, a cross-sectional study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of bovine infection with trypanosomes in south-western Uganda. Cattle from 10 different localities were checked by the microscopical examination of wet bloodsmears and thin, stained bloodsmears, and by blood centrifugation followed by the examination of the resultant buffy coats. Of the 1309 cattle investigated, 6.42% (5.56% and 7.26% of those from the Mbarara and Mubende districts, respectively) were found

Tsetse transmitted trypanosomiasis is a fatal disease commonly known as Nagana in cattle and sleeping sickness in humans. The disease threatens food security and has severe economic impact in Africa including most parts of Zambia. The level of effectiveness of commonly used African trypanosomiasis control methods has been reported in several studies. However, there have been no review studies on African trypanosomiasis control and management conducted in the context of One Health. This paper therefore seeks to fill this knowledge gap. A review of studies that have been conducted on African try

In tsetse-infested areas of Ethiopia, African Animal Trypanosomiasis is the most serious threat to livestock productivity. A cross-sectional study was conducted from May 2021 to September 2021 in the Zaba Gazo district to assess the prevalence and associated risk factors of bovine trypanosomiasis through parasitological and hematological techniques. In the current study, the overall prevalence of trypanosomiasis was found to be 21%. Among anticipated risk factors, the origin of animals has shown a statistically significant association (p < 0.05) with the occurrence of bovine trypanosomiasis. O

A study using a structured questionnaire was conducted in Busia District, Western Kenya and Kwale District, Coastal Kenya to obtain qualitative and quantitative information from 256 cattle owners about their production systems, their perceptions of the diseases encountered in their cattle, the drugs used, and other measures adopted to control trypanosomiasis in cattle. The predominant production system was mixed crop-livestock with farmers owning 2-11 local cattle on holdings between 2 and 5 ha. Approximately 15% of disease episodes in cattle were perceived to be trypanosomiasis, although the

A new method for fixation of trypanosomes for use in the indirect immunofluorescent antibody test (IFAT) is described. The method involves fixation of live trypanosomes, in suspension, using a mixture of 80% cold acetone and 0.25% formalin in saline. The fixed trypanosomes were stored in suspension at -60 degrees C, 4 degrees C or at room temperature for at least one year without loss of antigenicity. Using trypanosomes prepared this way as antigens in IFAT, species-specific antibodies were detected within 2 weeks of infection in sera of cattle infected with T. brucei or T. vivax. Thereafter,

A study was conducted to determine the incidence of trypanosome infections in cattle in tsetse-free and tsetse-infested zones of the Amhara Region of northwest Ethiopia. A total of six sentinel herds were established and the cattle observed during a period of 8 consecutive months. The prevalence of seropositive cattle was high in both the tsetse-free and tsetse-infested zones. The average monthly incidence of trypanosome infection, determined using molecular diagnostic tools, was 20.9% and 25.7% in the tsetse-free and the tsetse-infested zones, respectively. In the tsetse-free, Trypanosoma viv

In this, the first of a series of papers on the epidemiology of bovine trypanosomiasis in the Ghibe valley, southwest Ethiopia, the tsetse populations and their relationships to the prevalence of trypanosome infections in cattle are described. The tsetse challenge to cattle at two sites sites in the area was estimated as the product of tsetse relative density and the trypanosome infection rate in flies. The proportion of feeds taken by tsetse from cattle was also considered. Three tsetse species were detected in the area, Glossina pallidipes, G. fuscipes and G. morsitans submorsitans. A signif

Twenty-five steers were infected with T. vivax (EATRO 1721), 25 steers with T. congolense (EATRO 1800) and 25 steers kept as controls. Serum levels of immunoglobulins (IgG1, IgG2, IgM), natural antibodies to erythrocytes of chicken and sheep, and complement-fixing antibodies to T. vivax were measured. A significant decrease of serum IgM and natural antibodies to chicken erythrocytes occurred in the T. vivax group at day 9, i.e. at the decline of the first parasitemic wave. This was followed by a transient moderate increase of IgM accompanied by a transient decrease of IgG2. The T. congolense g

In July 1989, blood samples were collected from parasitaemic cattle in the Ghibe valley, Ethiopia, frozen in liquid nitrogen and transported to Nairobi, Kenya. Twelve of the stabilates were inoculated into individual Boran (Bos indicus) calves and characterised for their sensitivity, in turn, to diminazene aceturate (Berenil), isometamidium chloride (Samorin) and homidium chloride (Novidium). All 12 stabilates produced infections which were shown to be Trypanosoma congolense and resistant to treatment with diminazene aceturate at a dose of 7.0 mg kg-1 body weight (b.w.). Eleven of the infectio
