Avian tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium avium, occurred in three White Carneaux pigeons. Clinical signs varied and included anorexia, lameness, torticollis, and the development of cutaneous nodules. Lesions at necropsy consisted of caseating hepatic, pulmonary, and cutaneous granulomas. In one animal, the marrow in several bones was replaced with caseous material. Histopathologically, the granulomas contained necrotic material and acid fast bacilli surrounded by epitheloid cells, giant cells, and lymphocytes. Treatment of affected animals was not attempted. False positive and false negativ

Experimental infections enabled to test susceptibility of the goose and duck to M. avium. After intramuscular implantation of M. avium suspension, local lesions were observed at the spot of puncture in the geese, and miliary tuberculosis of spleen in 35 days, as well as miliary tuberculosis of liver after 69 days. In the ducks, local lesions were found at the spot of puncture in 35 days and miliary tuberculosis of liver and spleen in 69 days. Cultivation demonstrated mycobacteria in various tissues and organs since day 12 after infection. Peroral infection with contaminated feed caused lesions

Free-living birds are not only susceptible to certain infectious diseases; wild bird populations serve as reservoirs of several important diseases of public health concern. Bacterial and viral diseases endemic in populations of free-living birds such as tuberculosis, avian influenza, arboviral infections, and enteropathogens have been classified as emerging or reemerging. Providing care to wild avian patients increases the opportunity for direct contact with infected birds and the possibility of transmission of infectious disease to human handlers. Awareness of disease potential is critical to

Incidence of allergic reactions to avian tuberculin was investigated in 12,549 birds of the domestic fowl in the territory of one district, in 16 villages and in 721 small flocks. The reactions were found in 7.3% of birds and 35.5% flocks were infected. The zero reactions to tuberculin were observed only in one village out of the 16 villages investigated. Experimental infection confirmed high susceptibility of the domestic fowl to M. avium. After intramuscular implantation of M. avium suspension allergy to avian tuberculin was observed within a fortnight while within the same period histologic

From 1992 to mid-1996, a national survey of poultry diseases in Lebanon was conducted. This surveillance included meat breeder, layer breeder, commercial layer and chicken broiler flocks. The history, signs, lesions and laboratory tests of poultry were used in the diagnosis of prevalent poultry diseases. Culture techniques were used to screen for bacterial diseases; serological techniques and, to a lesser extent, culture techniques were used to diagnose viral diseases; and both serological and culture techniques were used to diagnose Mycoplasma infections. The outbreaks of diseases detected in

A dead canary from a mixed species zoological garden was presented for diagnostic necropsy. Cachexia with prominent atrophy of pectoral muscles, yellowish brown discoloration of the liver and kidney, dark brown to black intestinal contents and moderate proventricular dilatation with some degree of catarrhal gastritis were the significant macroscopic findings. Parenchymatous organs like the liver, the spleen, the lung and the kidneys were extremely affected by massive diffuse necrosis and heavy infiltration of mononuclear inflammatory cells, histopathologically. Many giant bacilli resembling Ma

Histologic examination revealed acid-fast organisms in a granulomatous lesion involving the cornea of an eye of a Maximilian's Parrot. Disseminated mycobacteriosis was also diagnosed. Antemortem attempts at determining the cause of the corneal lesion had been unsuccessful. Ocular involvement in birds with avian tuberculosis is uncommon. The corneal lesion in the parrot was likely initiated by a dysfunctional third eyelid.

The most significant mycobacterial diseases of free-living, captive and farmed deer are bovine tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium bovis, Johne's disease (paratuberculosis), caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis (basonym M. paratuberculosis), and avian tuberculosis, caused principally by M. avium subsp avium. The first case of M. bovis infection in farmed deer was identified in New Zealand in 1978. In 1983, a voluntary scheme was introduced in New Zealand to control tuberculosis in farmed deer, followed by a compulsory tuberculosis control scheme in 1990. The primary control m

Although an increased expression of the transcription factor v-maf avian musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma oncogene homolog B (MAFB) has been reported in patients with active tuberculosis (TB), its potential role in Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection remains unknown. Herein, we report that MafB in macrophages is a regulator of the pro-inflammatory cytokines, TNF-α and IL-12p40, which are crucial for host defense against M. tuberculosis infection. Cell-based luciferase assays showed that MafB inhibited TNF-α and IL-12p40 transcriptional activity in a dose-dependent manner. At the molecular leve

Mycobacterium intracellulare (MIT) was diagnosed postmortem by culture and supporting histopathology in seven birds from a flock of little blue penguins (Eudyptula minor) at the Henry Doorly Zoo (HDZ). These birds represented 20% of the deaths in the population over a 4 yr period. Clinical signs in affected birds included severe respiratory distress characterized by open-mouth breathing with chronic debilitation. On exam, plaques were noted in the larynx, trachea, and soft tissue of the caudal oropharynx. Index cases were identified on necropsy in two birds on loan to another institution in 20

Tuberculosis is still important as a disease of birds kept as pets and in zoos, and as a zoonosis. In living birds the diagnosis is difficult. In combination with the clinical and laboratory examination, radiology may help to lead to the diagnosis "generalised mycobacterial infection". Eight cases of tuberculosis seen in the clinic of our institute showed the different radiographic signs which may occur in the course of a mycobacterial infection. The specificity of the x-rays in combination with clinical and laboratory results is discussed.

The present report describes a case of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in an African Grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) kept as a pet bird. Diagnosis was confirmed by microbiologic and pathologic results, and indicated a human-avian transmission. Clinical signs included sublingual nodules resulting in anorexia and signs of osteolysis in the long bones. Proliferation consisted of several nodules with small greenish-caseous foci in cross-section and revealed a severe granulomatous inflammation without intralesional acid-fast rods. M. tuberculosis was cultured from a pooled sample o

The tuberculin purified protein derivative (PPD) is a widely used diagnostic antigen for tuberculosis, however it is poorly defined. Most mycobacterial proteins are extensively denatured by the procedure employed in its preparation, which explains previous difficulties in identifying constituents from PPD to characterize their behaviour in B- and T-cell reactions. We here described a proteomics-based characterization of PPD from several different sources by LC-MS/MS, which combines the solute separation power of HPLC, with the detection power of a mass spectrometer. The technique is able to id

Mycobacterial infections are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in birds and a considerable diagnostic challenge until the disease is advanced. In order to develop more clinically useful antemortem tests, a biological model was created that replicated naturally occurring disease. Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica; n = 8) were inoculated intravenously with Mycobacterium avium. Two additional birds served as uninoculated controls. Mean survival time of the inoculated birds was 68 +/- 13 days postinoculation (PI). Seven of the eight inoculated birds died naturally. Clinical an

Avian tuberculosis was diagnosed in two mature rheas on different ratite farms over a 2-year period. Both birds had died after progressively losing body condition. Caseonecrotic granulomas were scattered throughout the liver and spleen in both birds. Similar granulomas were in the lung of one bird and bilaterally in the subcutis cranial to the shoulder in the other bird. Smears of several granulomas from both rheas revealed large numbers of acid-fast bacilli. Histologically, the granulomas had caseonecrotic, non-mineralized centers surrounded by giant cells. Large numbers of acid-fast bacilli

Various species of free living birds play an important role in the epidemiological of avian mycobacteriosis as a source of mycobacteria. Among them of certain importance are feathered game, in this country, particularly pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) and partridge (Perdix perdix). In these species, closer contact with domestic animals can be expected. The aim of this work was to find their susceptibility to M. avium, origin and location of tuberculosis process and the occurrence of mycobacteria in organs and tissues. Moreover, in pheasants the possibility of transfer of M. avium through infect

The occurrence and extension of avian mycobacteriosis in house-sparrows (P. domesticus) and mountain-sparrows (P. montanus) have been followed under different epidemiological conditions. Out of 2.929 totally examined house-sparrow pathological changes of tuberculosis were found in 3 (0.10%) animals and in 14 (0.48%) animals the mycobacteria were isolated. By an examination of 544 mountain-sparrow the mycobacteria in 12 (2.20%) cases and in 1 case were isolated and the mycobacteria were found in the intestinal contents. Out of 11 different locations the mycobacteria were found only in places wh

The tuberculin skin test (TST) has been the mainstay of tuberculosis (TB) testing in primates for decades, but its interpretation in orangutans (Pongo spp.) is challenging, because many animals react strongly, without evidence of infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex. One explanation is cross-reactivity with environmental nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). The use of a comparative TST (CTST), comparing reactivity to avian (representing NTM) and bovine (representing tuberculous mycobacteria) tuberculins aids in distinguishing cross-reactivity due to sensitization by NTM from shared
