The various ultrasound (US) findings in 90 patients with abdominal (gastrointestinal, peritoneal, mesenteric and lymph node) tuberculosis (TB) studied in an area of high incidence of TB over a 1 year period were analysed. The lesions encountered were intestinal (n = 31), extraintestinal (n = 39), or a combination (n = 20). The extraintestinal lesions included free and loculated ascites (n = 36), localized ascites ('Club Sandwich sign') (n = 4), adhesions (n = 14), peritoneal thickening (n = 14), peritoneal nodules (n = 3), lymphadenopathy (n = 23) and cold abscesses (n = 10)-of these, the pres

Background: Gastrointestinal tuberculosis (GI TB) is a rare form of extrapulmonary TB that often mimics other conditions, such as Crohn's disease (CD) or GI malignancies. Conventional diagnostics, like direct microscopy and culture, are often inconclusive or slow, delaying treatment. In Germany, a low-incidence country, GI TB is underrecognized. Rising migration has led to a resurgence of TB cases, increasing the likelihood of encountering extrapulmonary presentations. This study evaluates the performance and utility of various diagnostic tools and proposes a diagnostic approach to reduce dela

A male Caucasian presented with abdominal pain and a right iliac fossa mass. There were no risk factors for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. He was investigated by upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, chest and small bowel radiology. The latter showed stricturing of the third and fourth parts of the duodenum, mid-jejunum and terminal ileum. Biopsies were non-specific and he was thought to have Crohn's disease. Subsequent treatment with corticosteroids resulted in improved well being and weight gain; however, the patient demonstrated disease progression with the development of compl

This is a report of a 27-year-old Nigerian male who presented with massive lower gastrointestinal haemorrhage requiring seven units of whole blood to finally stabilize him. Physical examination and other laboratory investigations as well as sigmoidoscopy were not helpful in establishing a diagnosis. Barium enema had indicated a suspicious narrowing of the transverse colon which led to advising laparotomy. The definitive diagnosis was established following laparotomy and biopsy, histology of which revealed tuberculosis. Following the institution of anti-tuberculous therapy the patient's respons

Genital fulminant tuberculosis is rarely a primary site of infection. We report a case of juvenile adnexal tuberculosis possibly related to tuberculosis immediately after cystectomy in the ileocecal region in a virginal girl. A 13-year-old virginal girl visited our clinic because of a huge ovarian tumor, which was resected by cystectomy. On postoperative day 39, fever episodes were noted, and she received antibiotics, which were not effective. An abscess developed in the region of the cecum and the right adnexa. Laparotomy revealed chronic abscess formation, especially in the right adnexa. Res

The gastrointestinal tuberculosis is a rare disease and it can mimic a large variety of gastrointestinal diseases. The most common site of gastrointestinal tuberculosis is the ileocoecal region followed by the ascending colon and jejunum. Complications are an absolute indication for surgical intervention. Perforation is an extremely uncommon complication of mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

The roentgenologic features of 160 cases of tuberculosis of the abdomen are reviewed. The 3 standard examinations of the gastrointestinal tract (plain film abdominal roentgenography, barium meal and follow-through studies, and barium enema examinations) are required to provide useful pointers towards the diagnosis. In plain film roentgenography of the abdomen, the triad of ascites, absence of gas shadows in the right iliac fossa, and segmental dilatation of the terminal ileum demonstrates features which are very suspicious of intestinal tuberculosis. In the barium meal studies showing disorder

Tuberculosis (TB) is a common disease in underdeveloped countries. Of all tuberculosis cases worldwide, 28% were reported from India. The most prevalent site of infection is the lungs (pulmonary TB), whereas extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is less common. The most common form of EPTB in India is Lymph Node TB, which accounts for around 35% of total EPTB cases. Splenic tuberculosis incidence is 8 % whereas tuberculosis of pancreas and gall bladder is extremely rare. Pancreatic and gallbladder tuberculosis (GT) is extremely rare and presents with non-specific features. The clinical manifestat

A 40-year-old male with history of HIV infection was admitted to the hospital with a one-month history of productive cough, vespertine fever, night sweats, loss of appetite and unintentional 10-Kg weight loss. Physical exam was remarkable for cachexia. Blood tests revealed a CD4+ T lymphocyte count of 23 cells/mm3 and HIV viral load of 837,678 copies/ml. Bacilloscopies were positive. Chest computed thomography (CT) showed multiple mediastinal lymph nodes, signs of esophagomediastinal fistula, pericardial effusion and multiple micronodular pulmonary opacities. Endoscopy (EGD) revealed a 10 mm d

Gastrointestinal tuberculosis has declined markedly in frequency since the introduction of antituberculous therapy. As a result, the diagnosis is often delayed in North American patients. Segmental colonic disease, especially in the absence of pulmonary tuberculosis, is often difficult to differentiate from Crohn's disease or a neoplasm. We describe a case of colonic tuberculosis mimicking carcinoma of the hepatic flexure of the colon.

Gastrointestinal Tuberculosis (GITB) and Crohn's disease (CD) are both chronic granulomatous diseases with a predilection to involve primarily the terminal ileum. GITB is often considered a disease of the developing world, while CD and inflammatory bowel disease are considered a disease of the developed world. But in recent times, the epidemiology of both diseases has changed. Differentiating GITB from CD is of immense clinical importance as the management of both diseases differs. While GITB needs anti-tubercular therapy (ATT), CD needs immunosuppressive therapy. Misdiagnosis or a delay in di

Intestinal tuberculosis (ITB) represents an important diagnostic challenge in the clinical setting, as it generally can occur as a chronic condition often mimicking other diseases such as Crohn's disease (CD), and can present itself with acute onset, which can be life-threatening. A 29-years-old Chinese woman coming to ER with abdominal pain, fever and weight loss. Computed tomography and colonoscopy images were not diagnostic. Despite medical therapy, the patient progressively worsened developing sepsis requiring emergency surgery. Pathological and microbiological examination of the colon bot

PURPOSE: Difficulties in early and accurate diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis lead to frequent misdiagnosis even in endemic areas. This study aimed to investigate clinical and laboratory characteristics of patients with lower gastrointestinal tract tuberculosis (LGITB).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who met the criteria for LGITB in a medical center from 1997 to 2006 were identified and their medical records reviewed.
RESULTS: A number of 4,567 patients with culture or histology-proven tuberculosis were identified, and 30 (0.66%) were diagnosed with LGITB. Principal co-morbidities were

Tuberculosis is a top 10 leading cause of death worldwide. Lungs are primarily involved organs in tuberculosis. The rest of cases are extrapulmonary tuberculosis (14% reported in 2017). Extrapulmonary tuberculosis always presents with non-specific symptoms, thus at risk of delay diagnosis and management. In genitourinary tuberculosis, kidney alone and kidney with urinary bladder or ureter is affected in more than 70% of cases. The ureter and urinary bladder infections are almost always secondary to tuberculous involvement of the kidney. Bacilli haematogenic spreading is a known transmission pa

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of cases of intestinal tuberculosis mainly due to the HIV epidemic. Its clinical manifestations and endoscopic findings are nonspecific, making diagnosis difficult, requiring high degree of suspicion. The authors present the case of a man, 55 years old, immunocompetent, who goes to the doctor due to constitutional symptoms after two months of evolution. Given the family history of colon cancer, colonoscopy is sought, showing an ulcerated lesion at the blind. Histology showed non-caseating granulomas and for AFB was negative. The followin

This case is about a complication of abdominal tuberculosis in the form of a massive lower gastrointestinal (GI) bleed, which was timely intervened by angioembolization. A young man in his mid-20s on empirical anti-tubercular therapy (ATT) for abdominal tuberculosis, presented with severe abdominal pain. The patient then developed frank per rectal bleeding, leading to a significant drop in hemoglobin level, requiring multiple blood transfusions. Upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy findings were inconclusive. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) of the abdomen was performed, which reveal

Mycobacterium tuberculosisis highly endemic in the Philippines. The diagnosis is challenging with its non-specific presentation and the organism could extend to any of the organs. Interestingly, bacterial peritonitis arising spontaneously from gastrointestinal tuberculosis (TB) in an otherwise healthy, non-cirrhotic patient is quite unusual. In this paper, we discuss the case of a 27-year-old HIV-seronegative woman with massive intraperitoneal mixed bacterial and tuberculous abscess presenting 20 months after being diagnosed with bacteriologically confirmed gastrointestinal TB. Repeated large-
