Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a constellation of metabolic disturbances that may be observed in patients with malignancies. Clinically significant TLS can occur spontaneously, but most often is seen 48-72 h after initiation of cancer treatment. The metabolic abnormalities observed in patients with TLS include hyperkalemia, hyperuricemia, and hyperphosphatemia, which leads to secondary hypocalcemia. The precise incidence of TLS is not defined, risk factors being represented by large tumor burden, neoplasms with either high growth fraction or high sensitivity to chemotherapy, and by pre-existing

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a rare complication following treatment in prostate cancer patients. We present a 65-year-old man with history of castration-resistant prostate cancer who developed TLS following 2 sessions of 177 Lu-PSMA therapy. The patient presented with bulky axillary and mediastinal lymphadenopathies, an unusual site for prostate cancer metastasis. Although his PSA levels declined following treatment, he reported excessive weakness leading to immobility. Laboratory correlation showed markedly increased lactate dehydrogenase, from 413 to 543,000 U/L, suggesting the occurrence

Tumor lysis syndrome is a typical oncological complication, characterized by hyperuricemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia with secondary hypocalcemia, acidosis and acute renal failure. it occurs particularly in patients with lymphoproliferative diseases during therapy with potent myelosuppressive substances. patients with solid tumors rarely develop a tumor lysis syndrome during anti-neoplastic therapy (chemo-, hormonal-, steroid therapy, radiotherapy). host-related (e.g. pre-existing volume depletion, hyperuricemia, acidic urine) and tumor-related (e.g. large tumor burden, tumor sensitivity

Tumor lysis syndrome in an onco-metabolic emergency resulting from massive lysis of rapidly proliferating malignant cells seen commonly in patients with hematological malignancies such as acute lymphocytic leukemia and Burkitt's lymphoma and is quite rare in solid tumors. Spontaneous development of tumor lysis has been described among other trigger factors such as corticosteroid therapy, anesthesia, tumor manipulation during surgery and pyrexia. We describe such a case in a 5-year-old boy posted for excision and staging of a massive Wilms' tumor who developed a hyperkalemic cardiac arrest duri

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of AKI during tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is not well understood due to the paucity of data. We aimed to decipher crystal-dependent and crystal-independent mechanisms of TLS-induced AKI.
METHODS: Crystalluria, plasma cytokine levels, and extracellular histones levels were measured in two cohorts of patients with TLS. We developed a model of TLS in syngeneic mice with acute myeloid leukemia, and analyzed ultrastructural changes in kidneys and endothelial permeability using intravital confocal microscopy. In parallel, we studied the endothelial toxicity of extrace

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a constellation of metabolic derangements that occur as a consequence of rapid cell turnover in malignancy and the release of intracellular solutes - potassium, phosphate, and nucleic acid metabolites. TLS classically occurs following chemotherapy, with severe renal failure. However, the entity referred to as spontaneous TLS occurs without a precipitating factor of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, steroid therapy, or immunotherapy and can develop in both hematologic and solid malignancies. Here, we report a rare case of a patient who presented with nonspecific symptoms

Tumor lysis syndrome is a metabolic complication that may follow the initiation of cancer therapy. It commonly occurs in hematological malignant patients particularly non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and acute leukemia due to chemotherapy or spontaneously. It is characterized by a biochemical abnormality such as hyperuricemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, and hypocalcemia and its clinical outcome is directly related to these biochemical abnormalities. Prevention and treatment of tumor lysis syndrome depend on immediate recognition of patients at risk. Therefore, identifying patients at risk and prop

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a potentially fatal complication of induction therapy for several types of malignancies. Electrolyte derangements and even downstream complications may also occur prior to the initial presentation to a medical provider, before an oncologic diagnosis has been established. It is therefore imperative that emergency physicians be familiar with the risk factors for TLS in children as well as the criteria for diagnosis and the strategies for prevention and management. Careful evaluation of serum electrolytes, uric acid, and renal function must occur. Patients at risk fo

OBJECTIVES: To provide an overview of tumor lysis syndrome, which is one of the metabolic oncologic emergencies.
DATA SOURCES: A review and synthesis of empirical articles.
CONCLUSION: One of the metabolic oncologic emergencies identified by the Oncology Nursing Society is tumor lysis syndrome. This condition is life-threatening and is characterized by metabolic derangements that can lead to acute kidney injury and multiple organ dysfunction. Normal intracellular components (potassium, phosphorus, and nucleic acids) spill into the bloodstream when cancer cells die. If the tumor is large and

Spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a rare condition in solid tumors, particularly in endometrial carcinoma. Spontaneous TLS occurs without the use of cytotoxic therapy but is observed particularly in hematologic malignancies. Given the high morbidity and mortality associated with spontaneous TLS, it is crucial to identify and treat it promptly. There have been only four cases of spontaneous TLS reported to date in the literature from a uterine source. We present a 59-year-old female with a recently diagnosed endometrial carcinoma with neuroendocrine features by dilation and curettage wh

Neuroblastoma (NB) is a solid tumor of the sympathetic nervous system, most commonly found in childhood, standing for 7% of all pediatric malignancies. The incidence in adults is markedly smaller: 1 case per 10 million adults per year. We report the case of a previously healthy 27-year-old woman who started with lumbar pain, asthenia, and abdominal distension over the last month. A chest and abdomen tomography scan showed a huge mass in the upper left hemithorax and marked hepatomegaly. The diagnosis was confirmed by hepatic and lung biopsies. On day 4, after admission, the patient started che

BACKGROUND: Tumour lysis syndrome is associated with high levels of uric acid, phosphate and potassium along with low levels of calcium and abnormal renal function. Sevelamer, an oral phosphate-binder is used in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in children and adults on hemodialysis.
CASE CHARACTERISTICS: Two children with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia who presented with a high tumour load and developed tumour lysis syndrome.
OBSERVATION: Both children received Rasburicase and Sevelamer hydrochloride. The serum phosphate reduced to normal levels within 24-48 hrs of initiation of seve

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a severe metabolic complication that usually occurs in patients with aggressive tumors who undergo treatment with chemotherapy. Traditionally, it was mainly associated with hematologic malignancies. However, over the past 4 decades, there have been increasing reports of TLS in solid tumors. We report a case of TLS in a patient with gastric cancer, as a complication of FOLFOX (5-fluorouracil, leucovorin, and oxaliplatin) chemotherapy. Our patient was a 48-year-old man with metastatic gastric adenocarcinoma who presented with altered mental status and slurred speech

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a potentially deadly complication of tumors or their treatment. This syndrome consists of a constellation of laboratory parameters such as hyperuricemia, hyperkalemia, hyperphosphatemia, and hypocalcemia and clinical complications such as seizures, acute renal insult, cardiac dysrhythmias and death. TLS is especially common in patients with hematological malignancies with rapid cellular turnover rates such as acute lymphocytic leukemia and Burkitt lymphoma, but is very rare in patients with solid tumors. However, it is essential to keep in mind that solid tumors c

OBJECTIVE: To describe the management of tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) with rasburicase in 2 patients who presented with cancer within the first month of life and compare and contrast both cases with respect to their underlying renal physiology, management, and eventual outcome.
CASE SUMMARY: TLS developed in 2 neonates born at 38 weeks' gestational age; both were managed in part with rasburicase. One patient was a 21-day-old infant who received 2 days of induction chemotherapy for the treatment of congenital Stage IV-S neuroblastoma. With a single 0.2 mg/kg dose of rasburicase, the serum urate

The prevention and identification of hyperuricemia are critical components in the management of tumor lysis syndrome (TLS), which is common in acute leukemias, large cell lymphomas, bulky tumors, large tumor burdens, and other cancers with high proliferation rates. Such cancers are very receptive to cytotoxic therapy because of increased mitotic rates. Lysis of their tumor cells results in metabolic abnormalities because of the release of their intracellular products. TLS is an oncologic emergency that could lead to renal failure and death; therefore, early identification of high-risk patients

BACKGROUND: Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS) is a well-recognized medical emergency in patients with cancer diagnosis. The diagnostic criteria of TLS have been revised many times since it was recognized, but still have many drawbacks that limit diagnosis accuracy.
SUMMARY: Autopsy studies in patients with perimortem diagnoses of TLS have shown that they may not have actually had TLS. Therefore, in many cancer patients who are at risk for TLS, clinical and laboratory criteria may be fulfilled due to other causes of acute kidney injury. In this review, we aimed to cast a spotlight on the shortcomings

Spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome (STLS) secondary to metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma is a rare clinical phenomenon. An 86-year-old woman with a history of pancreatic cysts presented to the emergency department with progressive fatigue, transaminitis, elevated lactate dehydrogenase, and acute kidney injury of unclear etiology. Abdominal imaging and celiac lymph node biopsy were consistent with metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Her clinical status deteriorated requiring intensive care unit transfer, and her laboratory results were found to be consistent with STLS. Despite treatment, she
