Exposure to long-wavelength light has been proposed as a potential intervention to slow myopia progression in children. This article provides an evidence-based review of the safety and myopia control efficacy of red light and discusses the potential mechanisms by which red light may work to slow childhood myopia progression. The spectral composition of the ambient light in the visual environment has powerful effects on eye growth and refractive development. Studies in mammalian and primate animal models (macaque monkeys and tree shrews) have shown that daily exposure to long-wavelength (red or

The course of the frontal diploic vein in the mole Talpa and the tree shrew Tupaia is described and compared to the frontal diploic vein of other mammals. The frontal diploic vein in Talpa and Tupaia connects the dorsal sagittal sinus to the veins of the orbit and has an emissary function. In certain other mammals it has a diploic function and may drain towards the orbit (e.g., Orycteropus) or towards the dorsal sagittal sinus (e.g., Didelphis). The frontal diploic vein of these mammals is not homologous to the vein of the human foramen caecum, but to the human frontal diploic vein. The vein o

The tree shrew ( Tupaia belangeri) has long been proposed as a suitable alternative to non-human primates (NHPs) in biomedical and laboratory research due to its close evolutionary relationship with primates. In recent years, significant advances have facilitated tree shrew studies, including the determination of the tree shrew genome, genetic manipulation using spermatogonial stem cells, viral vector-mediated gene delivery, and mapping of the tree shrew brain atlas. However, the limited availability of tree shrews globally remains a substantial challenge in the field. Additionally, determinin

The Chinese tree shrew ( Tupaia belangeri chinensis) has emerged as a promising model for investigating adrenal steroid synthesis, but it is unclear whether the same cells produce steroid hormones and whether their production is regulated in the same way as in humans. Here, we comprehensively mapped the cell types and pathways of steroid metabolism in the adrenal gland of Chinese tree shrews using single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptome analysis, mass spectrometry, and immunohistochemistry. We compared the transcriptomes of various adrenal cell types across tree shrews, humans, macaq

There is a world-wide epidemic of myopia (nearsightedness), produced largely by human-made environmental visual cues that disrupt the emmetropization feedback mechanism that normally uses defocus cues to produce and maintain eyes in good focus. Previous studies have shown that the wavelength of light affects this process and that myopic defocus can slow the progression of myopia in children. We first asked if continuous exposure to a small cage with restricted viewing distance would produce an environmentally-induced myopia in tree shrews, small diurnal mammals closely related to primates. BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study is to provide the first large data set on vertebral formulae and proportions, and examine their relationship with different locomotive modes in colugos (Dermoptera), tree shrews (Scandentia), and rodents (Rodentia), which have been considered less variable because they were thought to have a plesiomorphic number of 19 thoracolumbar vertebrae.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data included 33 colugos and 112 tree shrews, which are phylogenetically sister taxa, and 288 additional skeletons from 29 other mammalian species adapted to different locomotive modes,

Anatomical parameter values in tree shrews are major biological characteristic indicators in laboratory animals. Body size, bones and mammilla, organ weights, coefficient intestinal canal and other anatomical data were measured and analyzed in laboratory domesticated tree shrews (7 to 9 months of age). Measurement of 31 anatomical parameters showed that body height, width of the right ear, ileum and colon had significant differences between males and females (P<0.05). Highly significant differences were also found in body slanting length, chest depth, torso length, left and right forelimb leng

Injections of a wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate were placed in representative areas of the cerebellar cortex of adult tree shrews. Retrogradely labeled cells were found in the medial terminal nucleus (MTN) of the accessory optic system (AOS) when ventral portions of the uvula were involved in the injection site. These labeled cells are small to medium sized and have round or oval somata and few primary dendrites. The AOS functions to stabilize the eyes and head in space. The present observations provide evidence of a direct projection from the MTN of the tree shrew AOS t

Nine adult tree shrews, Tupaia glis, recently imported from West Malaysia were visually examined for ectoparasites while under general anesthesia. Three shrews were infested by the sucking louse, Sathrax durus , and six shrews had louse ova belonging to this species; two shrews had neither lice nor ova. A total of 20 adult female, 10 adult male, and three third instar nymphal lice was collected. Lice were located on the head, flanks, and dorsal body of shrews while ova were recorded mainly from the anterior flanks but also from some adjacent host sites. The tree shrews appeared to tolerate the

On the basis of histochemical characteristics it was possible to demostrate a sexual dimorphism of the tree shrew sublingual gland. Although numerous staining methods for the demonstration of mucosubstances were used in this study, only methods for the demonstration of sulfated glycoproteins (sulfomucins) were effective in demonstrating the sexual dimorphism. Numerous sulfomucin-laden cells occurred in the mucous tubules and acini of female sublingual glands, but only rarely were such cells observed in sublingual glands of male animals. Neither duct cells nor demilune cells of secretory endpie

Myopia is an independent risk factor for glaucoma, but the link between both conditions remains unknown. Both conditions induce connective tissue remodeling at the optic nerve head (ONH), including the peripapillary tissues. The purpose of this study was to investigate the thickness changes of the peripapillary tissues during experimental high myopia development in juvenile tree shrews. Six juvenile tree shrews experienced binocular normal vision, while nine received monocular -10D lens treatment starting at 24 days of visual experience (DVE) to induce high myopia in one eye and the other eye

PURPOSE: We previously showed that exposing tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri, small diurnal mammals closely related to primates) to chromatically simulated myopic defocus (CSMD) counteracted small-cage myopia and instead induced hyperopia (approximately +4 diopters [D]). Here, we explored the parameters of this effect.
METHODS: Tree shrews were exposed to the following interventions for 11 days: (1) rearing in closed (n = 7) or open (n = 6) small cages; (2) exposed to a video display of Maltese cross images with CSMD combined with overhead lighting (n = 4); (3) exposed to a video display of Malt

Rodent models, such as mice and rats, are commonly used to examine retinal ganglion cell damage in eye diseases. However, as nocturnal animals, rodent retinal structures differ from primates, imposing significant limitations in studying retinal pathology. Tree shrews (Tupaia belangeri) are small, diurnal paraprimates that exhibit superior visual acuity and color vision compared with mice. Like humans, tree shrews have a dense retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and a thick ganglion cell layer (GCL), making them a valuable model for investigating optic neuropathies. In this study, we applied high-

In infant tree shrews, exposure to narrow-band long-wavelength (red) light, that stimulates long-wavelength sensitive cones almost exclusively, slows axial elongation and produces hyperopia. We asked if red light produces hyperopia in juvenile and adolescent animals, ages when plus lenses are ineffective. Animals were raised in fluorescent colony lighting (100-300 lux) until they began 13days of red-light treatment at 11 (n=5, "infant"), 35 (n=5, "juvenile") or 95 (n=5, "adolescent") days of visual experience (DVE). LEDs provided 527-749 lux on the cage floor. To control for the higher red ill

PURPOSE: To investigate the relative positional changes between the Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) and the anterior scleral canal opening (ASCO), and border tissue configuration changes during experimental high myopia development in juvenile tree shrews.
METHODS: Juvenile tree shrews were assigned randomly to two groups: binocular normal vision (n = 9) and monocular -10 D lens treatment starting at 24 days of visual experience to induce high myopia in one eye while the other eye served as control (n = 12). Refractive and biometric measurements were obtained daily, and 48 radial optical cohere

Injections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were used to study the connections of the first and second somatosensory areas (SI and SII) in tree shrews. The locations of callosally projecting neurons in SI were determined by placing large injections of HRP in the SI region of one cerebral hemisphere and determining the organization of SI of the other cerebral hemisphere with microelectrode mapping. Many callosally projecting neurons were revealed in lateral SI representing the face, especially the glabrous nose. A sparse scattering of callosally projecting neurons were located more centrally in

Five Tupaia herpesviruses have been isolated until now: four in our laboratory which were termed THV-2, 3, 4, and 5, whereas THV-1 has been isolated by Melnick and his colleagues. THV-2 was isolated from tumour cell culture of a high-grade malignant lymphoma of a Tupaia, THV-3 was released from a cell culture of another Tupaia lymphoma, THV-4 from a spleen tissue culture of a moribund animal with finely granulated liver cirrhosis, and THV-5 from cultured spleen cells of an apparently healthy tree shrew. THV-1 to 5 were efficiently propagated, plaque-purified and cloned on Tupaia embryonic fibr

Recent investigations have suggested that the morphological effects of monocular deprivation can be explained by a developmental competitive interaction between the pathways from the two eyes. This study presents evidence in the tree shrew for binocular competition and for an unequal effect of such competition on the different layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus. The effects of monocular deprivation were evaluated by comparing cell size changes in the binocular and monocular segments of the lateral geniculate nucleus in three tree shrews raised with one eye sutured. In two of these animal

Wide-field (WF) neurons of the tectopulvinar pathway integrate retinal and cortical inputs via large dendritic arbors crucial for rapid visual motion detection. Previous studies identified potential marker genes for mouse WF neurons. Here, we validate CBLN2 as a molecular marker of the tree shrew WF neurons and construct AAVs that exploit CBLN2 promoter to selectively target WF neurons across species. Using intersectional genetics in the tree shrew, we show that WF neuron dendrites receive a distinct pattern of VGluT1+ and VGluT2+ inputs based on their distance from the cell body in the dorsov
