The effect of inferior turbinate surgery on nasal symptoms and inferior turbinate contractility.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare radiofrequency ablation (RFA), diode laser, and microdebrider-assisted inferior turbinoplasty (MAIT) in the treatment of chronic nasal obstruction in a one-year follow-up, and to pay special attention to the effect of the procedures on the contractility capacity of the inferior turbinates. METHODS: The patients filled a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) questionnaire regarding nasal symptoms pre- and postoperatively. Saccharin transit time (STT) evaluation and acoustic rhinometry were also performed. A total of 77 patients attended the one-year contr

Polyps originating from accessory middle turbinate and secondary middle turbinate.

OBJECTIVE: We report two extremely rare cases of polyps from unilateral accessory middle turbinates, one of which coexisted with a polyp from an inferomedially projecting, pneumatised, secondary middle turbinate. METHODS: Case report and literature review concerning accessory middle turbinate and secondary middle turbinate. RESULTS: Two patients presented with unilateral nasal obstruction. In both patients, nasal endoscopy revealed polypoid masses originating from the middle meatus. Paranasal sinus computed tomography and histopathological analysis confirmed the presence of polyps originatin

Coblation versus microdebrider-assisted turbinoplasty for endoscopic inferior turbinates reduction.

OBJECTIVE: Patients suffering from persistent inferior turbinates hypertrophy refractory to medical treatments require surgical intervention where the main aim is symptomatic relief without any complications. Extraturbinoplasty is one of the preferred procedures for turbinate reduction due to its efficacy in freeing up nasal space by removing the obstructing soft tissue and bone while preserving the turbinate mucosa. We sought to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of microdebrider assisted turbinoplasty (MAT) and coblation assisted turbinoplasty (CAT) performed as an extraturbinoplasty proc

Pneumatisation of turbinates and paranasal sinuses in children: case report.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a rare case of multiple anatomical variations in the sinonasal skeleton of an adolescent with chronic rhinosinusitis, together with its successful surgical management. CASE REPORT: A 15-year-old male adolescent was referred with a 3-year history of nasal blockage and hyposmia. His symptoms did not improve on maximal medical therapy. A pre-operative computed tomography scan revealed numerous anatomical variations in his nose and paranasal sinuses. He underwent neuronavigation-assisted endoscopic sinus surgery without complication, and with subsequent resolution of his sy

Submucous diathermy of the inferior turbinates in chronic hypertrophic rhinitis.

Twenty patients, 10 allergic and 10 non-allergic, with chronic hypertrophic rhinitis and presenting mainly with bilateral nasal obstruction were subjected to submucosal diathermy of their inferior turbinates. There was significant post-operative improvement clinically, histopathologically and histochemically in the non-allergic group, while the improvement was less obvious in the allergic cases. The post-operative clinical improvement as regards rhinorrhea and sneezing was not as marked as that for nasal obstruction. Evaluation of the results showed that submucous diathermy of inferior turbina

[Osteomyelitis of the turbinates and its significance in chronic sinusitis].

We described the treatment of hyperplasia of the turbinate by sub-mucous resection of the inferior turbinate in 1981. The conchal bones removed were examined, and a histological study is now presented. In most cases we found a nonbacterial inflammation of the bone marrow of the inferior turbinate. The bearing of this and other changes in the bone marrow on the increase in size of the bone causing reduced ventilation of the nose and the paranasal sinuses, leading to sinusitis are discussed.

Corticosteroid injections of the nasal turbinates: past experience and precautions.

Clinical experience with triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog) injections into the nasal turbinates for allergic and vasomotor rhinitis is reported by two authors. Gratifying results have occurred in most of the over 60,000 patients treated, with no serious side effects. Two cases of intravascular injections of another corticosteroid reaching the retinal circulation are reported, and methods for preventing this complication are proposed.

[Ho:YAG and diode laser treatment of hyperplastic inferior nasal turbinates].

BACKGROUND: Since the early 80's, chronic nasal obstruction due to hyperplastic turbinates is treated by laser light. Comparative clinical studies were performed to assess the clinical outcome of laser assisted endonasal turbinate surgery in longterm. METHODS: By means of a pulsed Ho:YAG laser emitting light at lambda = 2100 nm (0.8 - 1.2 J/pulse, 4 - 8 Hz), 69 patients suffering from nasal obstruction due to allergic rhinitis (46 %) and vasomotor rhinitis (54 %) were treated under local anesthesia. Furthermore, 50 patients (52 % with allergic rhinitis and 48 % with vasomotor rhinitis) were t

Middle turbinate osteoma.

Osteoma is the most common benign tumor of the paranasal sinuses. Turbinate osteomas are very rare and only four middle turbinate, one superior turbinate and one inferior turbinate osteoma cases have been reported. We present a rare case of osteoma of the left middle turbinate in a patient presented with unilateral nasal obstruction and epiphora that was removed endoscopically, and conduct a literature review on turbinate osteomas arising from different turbinates, their symptoms and management.

Myopericytoma on the nasal turbinate.

Myopericytoma is a mesenchymal tumour that shares characteristics with other soft tissue tumours including glomus tumours and myofibromas. These pericytic tumours show characteristic perivascular growth patterns (Sbaraglia M, Bellan E, Dei Tos AP. The 2020 WHO classification of soft tissue tumours: news and perspectives. Pathologica 2021;113:70-84. https://doi.org/10.32074/1591-951X-213). Myopericytoma differentiates itself as it tends to have a spindle shape histologically, rather than an epithelioid shape as with the glomus variety. Myopericytoma rarely demonstrate malignant behaviour. A 67-

Inferior turbinate lateralization.

Inferior turbinate lateralization via an endonasal approach is a reliable low-risk procedure to correct inferior turbinate hypertrophy resistant to medical treatment. This well-established technique provides nasal comfort while conserving the mucosal membrane and physiology of the inferior turbinate, minimizing the postoperative complications (empty nose syndrome) besetting turbinoplasty involving mucosal or submucosal reduction.

[Inferior turbinate neoplasms].

INTRODUCTION: The main aim of the work was to describe a rare clinical case of osteoma of inferior turbinate. The interest of the case is that such tumors are extremely rare. RESULTS: A female patient of 63 years old attended an ENT clinic. She complained on absence of nasal breath at the right side and headache. After a full ENT-examination, anamnesis, and a thorough analysis of the radiation examination results (computed tomography data), a decision was made to surgical treatment. Under general anesthesia, controlled hypotension surgery was done. First step was septoplasty, then the dense b

[Nasal turbinate surgery].

The nose forms the first 8 cm of the upper respiratory tract and is responsible for cleansing, humidification, and temperature control of the supplied air. This is also referred to as conditioning. The nasal valve region, formed by the head of the lower nasal concha, portions of the cartilaginous septum, and the upper lateral cartilage, is responsible for diffusing and accelerating the respiratory airflow. Prerequisite are regular mucociliary clearance and sufficient air passage. Hypertrophy of the lower nasal turbinate is one of the most common causes of symptomatic nasal congestion. In uncle
