The present study attempted to investigate the association among Type D, medication adherence and peritonitis in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients. Type D personality was assessed by the Chinese 14-item Type D Personality Scale (DS14) in CAPD patients. Patients' medication adherence was assessed by the Medication Adherence Report Scale, retrospectively. Of the 385 CAPD patients who were investigated, 137 (35.6%) patients had a Type D personality. The medication adherence was significantly poorer in the Type Ds compared with that of the non-Type Ds (21.5 ± 2.8 vs. 22.5 ±

The 'Distressed' or Type-D personality is described by the interaction between high levels of negative affectivity and social inhibition. This study investigated the prevalence of Type-D personality in men of different exercise status, the association between Type-D and body image perceptions, and the moderating effect of exercise status. Participants were 564 British males aged between 18 and 55 years. Of these 200 were classified as sedentary, 148 as active and 216 as weight trainers. Participants completed the DS14 and Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire. Results showed that

INTRODUCTION: Data on the association between Type D personality, its traits negative affectivity (NA) and social inhibition (SI), and risk of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in coronary outpatients is sparse. Furthermore, the associations between Type D subgroups and cardiovascular risk factors are largely unknown.
METHODS: We investigated i) Type D personality, NA and SI and risk of recurrent MACE, and ii) the relationship between Type D subgroups and risk factors in a coronary population. This prospective cohort study included 1083 patients` median 16 months after a myocardial infarcti

BACKGROUND: Both adverse early life-events and distressed personality are associated with an increased cardiovascular risk. As there is an important link between these psychological factors, we investigated how these might cluster in sex-specific psychological profiles. We further examined the association of these profiles with cardiovascular risk markers.
METHOD: 446 women (mean age = 49.8 ± 17.9 years) and 431 men (mean age = 49.4 ± 17.5 years) from the Dutch general population completed questionnaires on demographics, adverse early life-events (ETI), Type D personality (DS14), anxiety (GAD

BACKGROUND: We examined whether type-D personality exerts a stable effect on anxiety over time and the clinical relevance of type-D personality as a predictor of anxiety 12 months post-percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).
METHODS: Consecutive patients (n=416) with stable or unstable angina pectoris treated with PCI completed the Type-D Scale (DS14) at baseline and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) at baseline and 12 months.
RESULTS: At baseline, 26% of the patients were anxious, with 67% of these patients still being anxious 12 months post-PCI (p<0.001). There was no sign

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Coronary artery disease is one of the chronic diseases that contribute to a significant number of deaths worldwide. The prevention and management of coronary artery diseases are greatly influenced by the lifestyle of patients suffering from these disorders. On the contrary, as the personality types of individuals have the potential to influence lifestyle modifications, this study was conducted to ascertain the relationship between type D personality characteristics and self-efficacy in patients with coronary artery disease with type A personality.
METHODS: This Cross-sect

Background: Despite a growing interest in the types of human circadian activity, different chronotypes and personality-related issues have been rarely studied. It has already been emphasized that ‘stress personality’ is considered a risk factor for certain psychosomatic diseases and may be a temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) predictor. Therefore, an attempt has been made to analyze the chronotypes, stress levels, stress factors, and the occurrence of depression and TMDs in students with type D personalities. People with this personality trait tend to experience negative emotions more—depressi

BACKGROUND: The introduction of BCR-ABL tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) to chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) therapy has revolutionized the treatment of this disease. Although regular TKI intake is a prerequisite for successful therapy, it has been shown that a significant proportion of patients are non-compliant. Recently there is growing evidence that personality traits may influenced the tendency for non-adherence to treatment in patients with chronic diseases. As far as we know, such a relationship in patients with CML has not been examined, yet. The aim of our study was to determine if per

BACKGROUND: One personality type associated with poor health outcomes is distressed (Type D) personality which involves high levels of both social inhibition (SI) and negative affectivity (NA). Type D is also linked to psychopathologies such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety disorders, and depression. One mechanism through which personality temperament may result in these psychopathologies is avoidance. Recently, a computer-based measure designed to assess avoidant behaviors, in which the participant guides the behavior of an avatar interacting with strangers in social situatio

BACKGROUND: Type D personality (TDP) is a sign of tapered stress and compromises treatment outcomes including those of hip arthroplasty. The common dissatisfaction with total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is predicted by fear avoidance, pain catastrophizing and emotional lability, with poor quality of life (QoL) reflecting these strains. This study is the first to investigate the influence of TDP on TKA assuming (1) negative affect (NA) to be linked to fear avoidance and to increased dissatisfaction with TKA and (2) the expression of NA and social inhibition (SI) to not be stable over time.

OBJECTIVE: Optimal information provision is important in cancer survivorship, but satisfaction with this provision may depend upon individual differences in personality. We examined the effect of the personality traits negative affectivity and social inhibition, and their combined effect (Type D personality) on satisfaction with received information.
METHODS: Four population-based, cross-sectional surveys were conducted. All individuals diagnosed with lymphoma, multiple myeloma, endometrial cancer or colorectal cancer (1998-2008) as registered in the Eindhoven Cancer Registry were eligible fo

Type D personality has been linked to poorer psychosocial functioning and selected somatic conditions, yet evidence in student populations remains limited. This study examined associations between Type D personality traits and quality of life among Polish university students, and explored whether negative affectivity and social inhibition show domain-specific patterns. We conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous online survey among students in Poland. Type D personality was assessed using the DS-14, and quality of life using the WHOQOL-BREF. Participants reported clinician-diagnosed anxiety or d

BACKGROUND: Little is known regarding the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in patients with both coronary heart disease (CHD) and type D personality, and whether these patients may benefit from psychotherapy that modifies metacognitive beliefs implicated in disorder maintenance. This study explored prevalence rates among these patients and associations between type D characteristics, rumination and metacognitions.
METHODS: Forty-seven consecutive patients with CHD who scored positive for type D personality were included in this pre-planned study. Participants underwent structured clinical
