Emergent macrophytes specifically regulate ammonia-oxidizing microbial communities and functions: comammox dominance and N2O emission effects.

AIMS: Emergent macrophytes regulate nitrogen-cycling microbial processes in lake riparian zones, though the mechanisms underlying these species-specific effects remain to be fully elucidated. This study investigated the structure, functional activity, and environmental drivers of three ammonia-oxidizing microbial communities in sediments with different emergent macrophytes (Phragmites australis, Typha orientalis, and Thalia dealbata) in Meixi Lake, Changsha. METHODS AND RESULTS: Metagenomic sequencing, quantitative PCR (qPCR), potential nitrification rate, and N2O yield were integrated to rev

Synergistic biodegradation of trichloroethylene-contaminated soil using Typha angustifolia L. and an anaerobic degrading bacterial consortium.

Plant-microorganism combined bioremediation is a highly efficient and environmentally sustainable method for the remediation of contaminated soils. Despite its potential, the synergistic effects of wetland plants and anaerobic microbial consortium on the removal of chlorinated hydrocarbons (CAHs) from soil remain inadequately understood. In this study, an anaerobic bacterial consortium, capable of completely dechlorinating trichloroethylene (TCE), was enriched and screened from long-term CAH-contaminated soil. Subsequently, the combined effects of the wetland plant Typha angustifolia L. and th

Revealing the impact of pyrolysis temperature on dissolved organic matter released from the biochar prepared from Typha orientalis.

Biochars derived from wetland biomass have been extensively applied in water and wastewater treatments. This study investigated the quantity and chemical quality of dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from the biochar prepared from the typical wetland plant (Typha orientalis) at different pyrolysis temperatures (300-700 °C) by using fluorescence excitation-emission (EEM) spectrophotometry with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and UV-Visible spectroscopy. The results showed that the content of DOM released from biochars at low pyrolysis temperatures (300-500 °C) was higher than that obser

Construction of an ideotype root system architecture of subsurface flow constructed wetland macrophytes by vertical spatial stress: strengthening of rhizosphere effects and determination of appropriate substrate depth.

Strengthening rhizosphere effects to enhance pollutant removal is a hotspot of constructed wetlands (CWs) research in recent years, and improving the root traits and metabolic capacity of macrophytes is crucial for strengthening rhizosphere effects. In the field experiment, two types of subsurface flow (SSF) CWs (CW10 and CW20, with substrate depths of 10 and 20 cm, respectively) under the vertical spatial stress of roots (VSSR) and two types of non-VSSR SSF CWs (CW40 and CW60) were adopted with Typha orientalis as cultivated plants to investigate the variability of root development, metabolis

Integrating Metabolomics and Serum Pharmacochemistry to Reveal Potential Hemostatic Components and Processing Mechanisms of Carbonized Typhae Pollen.

Typhae Pollen (TP) is a traditional Chinese medicine used to resolve blood stasis and stop bleeding. Its carbonized form (CTP) shows enhanced hemostatic effects, though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study combined metabolomics and serum pharmacochemistry to identify active components and elucidate CTP's superior efficacy. An abnormal uterine bleeding rat model was induced by exogenous estrogen and treated with TP or CTP extracts. CTP more effectively regulated coagulation parameters, promoted endometrial repair, and reduced inflammation compared to TP. Metabolomics revealed 43

Synergy of fresh and accumulated organic matter to bacterial growth.

The main goal of this research was to evaluate whether the mixture of fresh labile dissolved organic matter (DOM) and accumulated refractory DOM influences bacterial production, respiration, and growth efficiency (BGE) in aquatic ecosystems. Bacterial batch cultures were set up using DOM leached from aquatic macrophytes as the fresh DOM pool and DOM accumulated from a tropical humic lagoon. Two sets of experiments were performed and bacterial growth was followed in cultures composed of each carbon substrate (first experiment) and by carbon substrates combined (second experiment), with and with

Seasonal influence on the efficacy of aquatic macrophytes as potential phytoremediation agents in urban wetlands.

Globally, metal contamination raises serious concerns within aquatic ecosystems. In aquatic systems, metal contamination can be removed by phytoremediation. This study assessed the ability of four macrophyte species (i.e. Phragmites australis, Typha capensis, Cyperus papyrus, and Cyperus dives) for phytoremediation of metals from five different wetlands across three seasons (i.e. cool-dry, hot-wet, hot-dry). In addition, this study used the bioconcentration factor (BCF) and translocation factor (TF) to determine the accumulation and translocation of metals within macrophyte species. The study

Optimizing Typha biochar with phosphoric acid modification and ferric chloride impregnation for hexavalent chromium remediation in water and soil.

Considering the persistent and covert nature of heavy metal soil contamination, the sustainable development of ecological environments and food safety is at significant risk. Our study focuses on remediating soils contaminated with chromium (Cr); we introduce an advanced remediation material, iron oxide phosphoric acid-loaded activated biochar (HFBC), synthesized through pyrolysis. This HFBC displays greater microporosity, fewer impurities, and enhanced efficiency for the remediation process. Our research utilized a comprehensive set of analytical techniques, including Scanning Electron Micros

Phytoremediation of metals in oil sands process affected water by native wetland species.

Process affected water and other industrial wastewaters are a major environmental concern. During oil sands mining, large amounts of oil sands process affected water (OSPW) are generated and stored in ponds until reclaimed and ready for surface water discharge. While much research has focused on organics in process waters, trace metals at high concentrations may also pose environmental risks. Phytoremediation is a cost effective and sustainable approach that employs plants to extract and reduce contaminants in water. The research was undertaken in mesocosm scale constructed wetlands with plant

The role of plant uptake in total phosphorous and total nitrogen removal in vegetated bioretention cells using vetiver and cattail.

Bioretention cells have emerged as a prominent strategy for mitigating pollutant loads within urban stormwater runoff. This study delves into the role of plant uptake in the simultaneous removal of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds within these systems. Three bioretention cells-CP, P1, and P2-were constructed using local soil, C33 sand, and gravel. CP served as the unvegetated control, while P1 and P2 were vegetated with vetiver and cattail, respectively. The removal efficiencies of NO₃⁻-N, NH₃⁻-N, NO₂⁻-N, TN, TP, and COD from rainwater were evaluated under saturated and unsaturated conditions

Efficacy and Nontarget Effects of a Spinosad-Based Larvicide in Minnesota Vernal Pools and Cattail Marshes.

Larvicides that contain spinosad, a bacterial metabolite, are used to control mosquitoes in diverse aquatic habitats. These same habitats are home to other invertebrates, including Crustacea-fairy shrimp, isopods, and amphipods-and mollusks-fingernail clams and freshwater snails. A double-blind study evaluated the effects of Natular® G, a granular treatment containing spinosad, on spring Aedes spp. and nontarget invertebrates in vernal wetlands. Within 14 days after application, Natular G controlled larvae of spring Aedes by 53-84%, depending on species, but had no significant effects on numbe

Hot-water pretreatment of cattails for extraction of cellulose.

To date in the US, production of renewable fuels, particularly ethanol, is primarily from food crops that are high in sugar and starch. The use of arable land for fuel rather than food production and the use of a food source for fuel rather than food have created issues in pricing and availability of traditional foods and feed. The use of cattails to produce biofuel will add value to land and also reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by replacing petroleum products. In order to investigate the feasibility of converting cattails into cellulosic ethanol, a hot-water pretreatment process was stud
