Synergistic effect of ultrasonic waves under pressure at mild temperatures (MTS) in yeast inactivation.

Ultrasonic treatments are one of the new technologies for microbial inactivation that could serve as an alternative for food preservation. However, decimal reduction times for most of microbial species generally exceed 1 min. Therefore, combined processes have been designed, based on the simultaneous application of ultrasonic waves under pressure at moderate temperatures (mano-thermo-sonication process, MTS). The aim of this study was mathematically quantify the synergism of MTS treatments on S. bayanus and different microbial groups including vegetative cells and bacterial spores and compare

Comparative examination of human proximal tibiae in vitro by ultrasonic guided waves and pQCT.

The velocity of ultrasonic guided waves in long bones is dependent upon two determinants of bone strength: the cortical thickness and the material properties. In this study, six human proximal tibiae in vitro were examined to test the efficacy of an ultrasonic method based on guided waves. Peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) was used as the comparative reference modality. The guided wave velocity (c(F)) was derived from two-dimensional (2-D) spatial-temporal waveform profiles formed by multiple ultrasonic signals acquired along the bones at 100 kHz frequency and passed wavelet p

An object transport system using flexural ultrasonic progressive waves generated by two-mode excitation.

An object transport system using low amplitude and high frequency progressive waves generated by two-mode excitation is presented. A theoretical model for the system was developed using normal mode expansion and the modal participation factor. To identify the factors that affect the transport speed, the changes with the mass of objects on the beam, the input power, the phase difference, and the excitation frequency were experimentally investigated. With a power input of 40 W, a transport speed of 10 cm/s was obtained for an object weighing 30 g. The tests indicate that, not only the phase diff

Vibration, sonic and ultrasonic wave propagation analysis for the detection of osteoporosis.

The feasibility of vibration analysis and wave propagation analysis for the detection of osteoporosis is discussed. The relationship between the resonant frequencies, obtained by vibration analysis, and geometrical and material properties of long bones is found using a simple beam model. This relationship was verified experimentally on 142 excised bones. In vitro measurements for the detection of osteoporosis were performed on excised bones. Using a specific protocol for vibration and ultrasound measurements, a population of osteoporotic patients and age-matched controls were measured. From th

Cortical bone plate properties assessment using inversion of axially transmitted low frequency ultrasonic guided waves.

Over the past few decades, early osteoporosis detection using ultrasonic bone quality evaluation has gained prominence. Specifically, various studies focused on axial transmission using ultrasonic guided waves and have highlighted this technique's sensitivity to intrinsic properties of long cortical bones. This work aims to demonstrate the potential of low-frequency ultrasonic guided waves to infer the properties of the bone inside which they are propagating. A proprietary ultrasonic transducer, tailored to transmit ultrasonic guided waves under 500 kHz, was used for the data collection. The g

Quantum analogous spin states to explain topological phase for guided waves in ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation.

Spin is a physically observable property that is instrumental for topological behaviors in quantum mechanics. Spin states dictate complex interactions of physical parameters in a topological media during wave propagation. Ultrasonic guided waves are elastic waves that propagate in materials and structures and may also have similar quantum analogous spin states leading to the topological behavior. Traditionally nondestructive evaluation and structural health monitoring use ultrasonic guided waves, but spin states and their topological contributions are not measured or analyzed for damage identi

Effect of ultrasonic waves on the stability of all-trans lutein and its degradation kinetics.

Ultrasound treatment has been widely applied in the extraction of biologically active compounds including carotenoids. However, there are few reports on their effects on the stability of these compounds. In the present study, the stability of all-trans lutein, one of the carotenoids, was investigated under the action of ultrasound. Results showed that ultrasound induced the isomerization of all-trans lutein to its isomers, namely to 13-cis lutein, 13'-cis lutein, 9-cis lutein and 9'-cis lutein as analyzed by HPLC coupled with DAD and LC-MS; and the percentage of the isomerization increased wit

Assessment of the cortical bone thickness using ultrasonic guided waves: modelling and in vitro study.

Determination of cortical bone thickness is warranted, e.g., for assessing the level of endosteal resorption in osteoporosis or other bone pathologies. We have shown previously that the velocity of the fundamental antisymmetric (or flexural) guided wave, measured for bone phantoms and bones in vitro, correlates with the cortical thickness significantly better than those by other axial ultrasound methods. In addition, we have introduced an inversion scheme based on guided wave theory, group velocity filtering and 2-D fast Fourier transform, for determination of cortical thickness from the measu

Active Monitoring of Fatigue Crack in the Weld Zone of Bogie Frames Using Ultrasonic Guided Waves.

The bogie frame is an important structure of railway vehicles, transmitting the traction, braking force, lateral force, and vertical force during the traction operation. With the development of high speeds and heavy loads, the appearance of fatigue cracks in the bogie frames is increasing, which reduces the driving life of railway vehicles and even causes serious traffic accidents. Real-time monitoring on the integrity of the bogie is an inevitable requirement for ensuring the safe operation of railway vehicles. In this paper, ultrasonic guided wave-based active structural health monitoring (S

Imparting Pharmaceutical Applications to the Surface of Fabrics for Wound and Skin Care by Ultrasonic Waves.

In this review, we report the functionalization of textiles composed of nanoscale reactive materials in the treatment of wounds and skin diseases such as acne. In view of the growing demand for high-quality textiles, much research is focused on the creation of antimicrobial finishings for fabrics, in order to protect customers from pathogenic or odorgenerating microorganisms. We present coatings from inorganic, organic and biochemical nanoparticles (NPs) on surfaces that impart the ability to kill bacteria, avoid biofilm formation and speed up the recovery of wounds. In all three cases, sonoch

Heterogeneity of ultrasonic wave properties in ex vivo cortical bone of racehorse.

Despite the prevalence of lower limb disease in racehorses, outdoor bone evaluation equipment is lacking. Consequently, a secure and cost-effective field screening system for bones is required to identify early-stage leg illness. Elastic stiffness cannot be measured using x-ray techniques and is closely associated with bone quality, which is recognized as a significant determinant of fracture risk. Quantitative ultrasound has garnered attention as a viable option, offering insights into elastic stiffness. Understanding the characteristic behaviors of ultrasonic wave properties (velocity, atten

Quantized topological phase of ultrasonic guided wave with spin orbit interaction.

Acoustic and ultrasonic waves have recently been described to have quantifiable spin states. Polarization vectors that evolve over time carry information of the spin state of wave propagates in a media, that is generally non observable. Quantum analogous spin state of ultrasonic guided wave is primarily manifest nonzero spin angular momentum (SAM) and its integration over the wave path gives the topological phase acquired due to the modified polarity. The topological geometric phase gives a new opportunity to quantify damage state in materials using ultrasonic guided wave that were usually con

Experimental and mechanism study: Partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide gel degradation and deplugging via ultrasonic waves and chemical agents.

Partially hydrolyzed Polyacrylamide (PHPAM) crosslinked by Cr+3 is frequently applied to plug thief zone for the better water management in matured oil reservoir. However, PHPAM gel may certainly cause inevitable formation damage nearby the wellbore. Although various kinds of chemical agents, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), and chlorine dioxide (ClO2) were employed to mitigate the nearby wellbore damage. But, huge financial investment, poor degelation efficiency, environmentally insecure, corrosion problem, and long time span requirement persuade researchers to l

Damage Localization on a Complex Composite Structure Based on NRMSD and Normal Distribution Using Ultrasonic Guided Waves.

Continuous structural health monitoring is essential for ensuring the safe operation of critical engineering systems. Ultrasonic guided waves are widely used for damage detection and localization due to their ability to cover large areas with high sensitivity to structural changes. This work evaluates the robustness of a previously proposed guided-wave localization approach by applying it to the complex geometry of carbon fiber composite plates with integrated omega stringers. The measurement data used in this study were provided within the framework of the Open Guided Waves project. We employ

Identification of long-range ultrasonic guided wave characteristics in cortical bone by modelling.

The propagation of ultrasonic guided waves in cortical bone has potential to inform medical caregivers about the condition of the bone structure. However, as waveguides, human long bones such as the tibia are complex in terms of their material behavior and their geometric features. They exhibit anisotropic elasticity and internal damping. For the first time, wave propagation is modelled in the irregular hollow tibial cross-section, which varies along its long axis. Semi-analytical, frequency domain, and time domain finite element analyses providing complimentary information about long-range wa

An ultrasonic method to measure stress without calibration: The angled shear wave method.

Measuring stress levels in loaded structures is crucial to assess and monitor structure health and to predict the length of remaining structural life. Many ultrasonic methods are able to accurately predict in-plane stresses inside a controlled laboratory environment but struggle to be robust outside, in a real-world setting. That is because these methods rely either on knowing beforehand the material constants (which are difficult to acquire) or require significant calibration for each specimen. This paper presents an ultrasonic method to evaluate the in-plane stress in situ directly, without

Guided ultrasonic wave monitoring for osseointegration assessment of an intraosseous transcutaneous amputation prosthesis.

This study investigated the feasibility of guided ultrasonic wave monitoring of bone attachment to uncemented orthopaedic implants during the rehabilitation process (osseointegration), which is crucial for implant stability and long-term survival. Experiments were conducted using a simplified three-layer synthetic bone model of an intraosseous transcutaneous amputation prosthesis (ITAP) implant, used for femoral amputee patients, where epoxy curing simulated the bone ingrowth process associated with increasing bone-implant interface layer stiffness, representing the early stages of osseointegr

Simulation study on the effects of cancellous bone structure in the skull on ultrasonic wave propagation.

The transcranial Doppler method (TCD) enables the measurement of cerebral blood flow velocity and detection of emboli by applying an ultrasound probe to the temporal bone window, or the orbital or greater occipital foramina. TCD is widely used for evaluation of cerebral vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage, early detection of patients with arterial stenosis, and the assessment of brain death. However, measurements often become difficult in older women. Among various factors contributing to this problem, we focused on the effect of the diploe in the skull bone on the penetration of ultrasoun
