Urban Waste Management, Air Quality, and Public Health: Assessing the Health Burden of Rapid Urbanization in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Rapid urbanization in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) is placing increasing pressure on waste management systems and urban air quality, with significant health implications. This study integrates cross-city analysis of waste systems, air quality, and health burdens in rapidly urbanizing SSA. It examines the links between waste practices, pollution, and health outcomes in fast-growing SSA cities using international and national data sources. Inadequate collection, open dumping and burning, and poorly regulated landfills elevate pollutant concentrations, particularly PM2.5, frequently exceeding World H

Air pollution and health in three urban communities.

A health study was conducted in three communities in the greater Montreal region; the first two were characterized by relatively high particulate and sulfur dioxide levels, respectively, and a third community without major industrial pollution. In each community, 300 men and women 45 to 64 yr of age were studied. Residents of the two more polluted communities exhibited a higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms and mean lung function evaluated by various tests was lower than in residents of the less polluted community. When intercity differences in age and smoking were accounted for, no stati

Health and employment of a female population in an urban area.

The authors discuss the results of a survey of women aged 25 to 50 living in a university town in southern France (Montpellier). Morbidity of these women (reported health problems, consultation with health care professionals etc) was analysed as a function of whether or not they were employed out of the home. Overall, differences were minimal; after correction for demographic factors, the only significant difference was more frequent reports of fatigue, overwork or nervousness in the employed women. Satisfaction with life situations was more closely correlated with health than was employment p

CARDIO4Cities: A roadmap for improving urban cardiovascular health.

This roadmap reviews CARDIO4Cities, a whole-of-city approach designed to reduce cardiovascular risk and disease at population level. As urbanization accelerates globally - with 68% of the global population projected to live in cities by 2050 - cities across income settings face a growing burden of cardiovascular disease, yet often lack operational models that translate evidence into scalable action. CARDIO4Cities responds to this gap by combining a simple, standardized population-health framework with locally adaptable implementation pathways that can be embedded within existing city systems.

Urban girls, internet use, and accessing health information.

Effects of child health on housing in the urban U.S.

This study exploits an exogenous health shock-the birth of a child with a severe health condition that is considered by the medical community to be random-to investigate the effect of that shock on the family's housing situation. We use population-based data from an urban birth cohort study in the U.S. that oversampled non-marital births, resulting in a relatively disadvantaged sample that may be particularly susceptible to the effects of adverse life events. The health conditions were recorded in the infants' hospital medical records and coded by a pediatric consultant to capture conditions t

Response of health systems to urbanization in developing countries.

Equity in access to health care is now accepted as a basic ethical principle for health development. The glaring inequalities in health suffered by poor people living in slums are a strong justification for urgent action. The problem is rapidly increasing.
