Surveys of arterial pressure carried out in rural and urban communities in Western Nigeria showed a steady rise in systolic values with age, this trend being less marked with diastolic pressures. Blood pressure levels were similar in women from rural and urban areas, but seemed much higher in urban than in rural men. The incidence of proteinuria was lowest in the female urban group. In general, the incidence of proteinuria or glycosuria was low and did not appear to be related to the blood pressure.

This study aims to investigate the prevalence of elder abuse and neglect in an urban Chinese population. A cross-sectional study was performed in a major urban medical center in NanJing, China. A total of 412 participants completed the survey and 145 (35%) participants screened positive for elder abuse and neglect. The mean age of the victims was 69 years and 59% were male. Eight hundred and eighty-four consecutive women had cervical smears in a clinic in Lagos, Nigeria between September 1998 and 31 August 1999. Mean age was 36.6 - 11.6 years (range 16-81 years); 93.7% were first-time screening. Three hundred and twenty-five (36.5%) smears were normal, inflammatory smears 52.7%, mild dyskaryosis 2.4%, moderate dyskaryosis 1.5%, severe dyskaryosis 0.3% and probable malignancy (malignant cells) 0.8%. 200 uveitis cases and 100 controls were serologically analysed for Toxoplasma antibodies (Ab) using indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT-IgG, Igm) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA IgG, IgM). Ophthalmologically cases were segregated into 4 groups anterior uveitis, posterior uveitis, pan uveitis and varied presentation uveitis.
