Micro-scale urbanization-based risk factors for dengue epidemics.

Dengue is one of the world's most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral diseases. As it is found mostly in urban and semi-urban areas, urbanization and associated human activities that affect the environment and larval habitats could become risk factors (e.g., lane width, conditions of street ditches) for the spread of dengue. However, there are currently no systematic studies of micro-scale urbanization-based risk factors for the spread of dengue epidemics. We describe the study area, two micro-scale environmental risk factors associated with urbanization, and meteorological data. Since the

Renewable energy, urbanization, and ecological footprint linkage in CIVETS.

Emerging economies are mostly plague by a massive consumption of non-renewable energy amidst an ever inceasing urbanization rate with little or no attention to the quality of the environmental. As such, this paper investigates the relationship between renewable energy, urbanization, economic growth, trade openness, and ecological footprint in CIVETS countries, namely, Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey, and South Africa. The study employs augmented mean group estimator, panel cointegration, and causality tests. The findings reveal that renewable energy improves environmental quality,

Wilderness in the city: the urbanization of Echinococcus multilocularis.

A distinct increase in fox populations, particularly in urban areas, has been observed in Europe. This is of particular concern in endemic regions of the small fox tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis, the aetiological agent of human alveolar echinococcosis. Novel tools have facilitated the investigation of the ecology of urban foxes and have demonstrated the urban wildlife cycle of E. multilocularis. Such studies are essential for estimating the risk of transmission to humans and to determine the basics for the development of control strategies.

Response of health systems to urbanization in developing countries.

Equity in access to health care is now accepted as a basic ethical principle for health development. The glaring inequalities in health suffered by poor people living in slums are a strong justification for urgent action. The problem is rapidly increasing.

Inflammatory Shift in Chronic Rhinosinusitis Amidst Guangzhou's Urbanization (2000-2018).

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) exhibits temporal and geographic diversity in pathological endotypes with progressive eosinophilic infiltration, while the underlying causes remain unclear. Current pathological endotypes determination relies on mean cell count per high-power field, requiring accuracy optimization. METHODS: In this retrospective study, 970 CRS patients in Guangzhou from 2000 to 2018 undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery were divided into five biennial cohorts. Demographic, clinical, and pathological data were analyzed to compare subgroup differences and assess correlatio

Urbanization exacerbates disparities in exposure to air pollution in China.

Prolonged exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with harmful impacts on human health and population growth in urban areas has exacerbated this exposure. In this study, we compare the exposure between cities at a national level and between different regions within cities considering the population in situ. We estimate the impacts of pollution and population on exposure by spatial and time series analysis from 2000 to 2018 based on 1-km grid data. Our results show that the exposure significantly increases with an increase in city size but is not necessarily related to higher

Changes in the vaginal microbiota across a gradient of urbanization.

The vaginal microbiota of healthy women typically has low diversity, which increases after perturbations. Among these, lifestyle associated with certain sexual and antimicrobial practices may be associated with higher diversity. To test this hypothesis, we characterized the vaginal microbiota in the cervicovaginal and introital sites in sexually active Amerindians (N = 82) spanning urbanization, and in urban mestizos (N = 29), in the Venezuelan Amazonas. HPV status was also considered. Sampling was performed in an urban gradient from remote villages to a town, and women were individually class

Street trees reduce the negative effects of urbanization on birds.

The effects of streets on biodiversity is an important aspect of urban ecology, but it has been neglected worldwide. Several vegetation attributes (e.g. street tree density and diversity) have important effects on biodiversity and ecological processes. In this study, we evaluated the influences of urban vegetation-represented by characteristics of street trees (canopy size, proportion of native tree species and tree species richness)-and characteristics of the landscape (distance to parks and vegetation quantity), and human impacts (human population size and exposure to noise) on taxonomic dat

Rising incidence of multiple sclerosis in females associated with urbanization.

OBJECTIVE: To design and perform a case-control study of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Crete, an island of 0.6 million people, that has experienced profound socioeconomic changes in recent decades. METHODS: All MS cases occurring on Crete from 1980 to 2008 were ascertained. To search for putative risk factors, a structured questionnaire of 71 variables was employed, with patients with MS (n = 657) being compared to random controls (n = 593) matched for age, gender, and current place of residence. RESULTS: MS incidence rose markedly on Crete over the past 3 decades. This increase was associated

Arthropod-borne disease challenges from planetary warming, urbanization, and migration.

As the world confronts simultaneous climate and health emergencies, the spread of emerging infectious diseases, particularly arboviruses, underscores the intersection of planetary health, global mobility, and disease risk. Viral pathogens like Oropouche, dengue, and chikungunya are extending their reach, with expanding vector habitats (ticks, mosquitoes, and others) driven by global warming and changing ambient humidity. Arboviral risks due to these unfavorable vector dynamics are exacerbated by voluntary and involuntary migration of people, urbanization with attendant crowding, and suboptimal

Influence of Rapid Urbanization on Thyroid Autoimmune Disease in China.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), especially Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT), has increased dramatically in China. Moreover, China is experiencing the largest scale of urbanization in the world. We intended to explore the relationship between rapid urbanization and HT. METHODS: A total of 2946 subjects in Zhejiang Shangyu (SY) (n = 1546) and Jiangsu Nanjing (NJ) (n = 1400) were enrolled in this study. Serum TPOAb, TGAb, and thyrotropin (TSH) were measured, and ultrasonography of the thyroid was performed in all subjects. DNA was extracted from all subjects, and f

Urbanization-driven increases in summertime compound heat extremes across China.

Summertime extreme heat events exert severe impacts on the natural environment and human society, especially in densely populated and highly urbanized regions. While previous studies have focused on independent heat day/night, there is a lack of attention to the changes in compound events with cooccurring daytime and nighttime extreme temperature on the same day. In this study, we examine the spatio-temporal changes of summertime compound heat extremes (including compound heat day and compound heatwave) across China, with a particular focus on 20 major urban agglomerations (UAs), and quantify

[Schistosomiasis due to Schistosoma intercalatum and urbanization in central Africa].

The species name of Schistosoma intercalatum, Fischer 1934 is linked to the shape and the size of his eggs, which are intermediate between those of S. haematobium and S. bovis. S. intercalatum is the instrument of an intestinal form of schistosomiasis looking like the form induced by S. mansoni but characterized by a low location of the lesions, mainly situated at the rectum and sigmoid level. The spreading area of S. intercalatum is bound to Central Africa. The foci are often urban and of a size limited to a town district. Bulinus forskalii is the intermediate host mostly involved in transmit

Urbanization rivals regional climate as an evolutionary driver of white clover.

Urbanization and climate change are globally progressing, driving evolution in many species. However, their relative importance as drivers of evolution remains poorly understood because they are typically studied separately and lacking quantitative comparison of their effects. Here, we focused on the evolution of hydrogen cyanide (HCN) production and its components (cyanogenic glycosides and the hydrolytic enzyme) in white clover (Trifolium repens L.). To elucidate the relative effects of micro- and macro-scale environmental changes (i.e., urbanization-induced environmental change within a cit

A Narrative Review of Urbanization and Mental Health: An Indian Perspective.

Urbanization is a phenomenon that shows the expansion of urban areas in conjunction with industrial and economic progress. Rapid world urbanization is caused by the swift rise in urban residents as a proportion of the population. Efforts to examine the quality of urban life and urbanization as distinct risk factors for mental illness within specific age groups have been made. However, the issue remains contentious and largely unresolved. Urban mental health issues, such as substance abuse, fear of crime, poverty, and ethnicity, are associated with factors like depression, aggression, fear, sad

Urbanization and Altitude Are Associated with Low Kidney Function in Peru.

Background: Kidney health needs to be studied in low- and middle-income countries with populations living at high altitude and undergoing urbanization. We studied whether greater level of urbanization was associated with worse kidney function and higher hemoglobin was associated with worse kidney function at high altitude. Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of population-based studies in Peru including five sites at different altitude above the sea level and urbanization level (in decreasing order of urbanization): Lima (sea level), Arequipa (2335 m), urban Puno (3825 m), Tumbes (sea level), an
