[Non-operative treatment of ureteral calculi using ureterorenoscopy].

Rigid transurethral ureteroscopy was used in the treatment of 31 patients with 32 ureteral calculi. The stones could be visualized in 90% of cases. The aim of treatment was immediate extraction under visual control for smaller calculi and retrograde advancement into the renal pelvis with subsequent extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for larger calculi. The aim of treatment was reached in 92% (11/12) of stones in the lower third of the ureter, in 67% (4/6) in the middle third and in 64% (9/14) in the upper third of the ureter leaving 12 calculi extracted and 12 pushed up into the renal pelvi

Factors associated with urinoma accompanied by ureteral calculi.

OBJECTIVE: Urinoma is a rare entity and mainly occurs due to acute obstruction such as ureteral stone. We aimed to demonstrate factors associated with urinoma accompanied by ureteral calculi. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Data of 550 patients who were diagnosed with ureteral stone by computed tomography (CT) were analyzed retrospectively. In 20 patients perirenal urinoma was associated with ureteral calculi (group I), whereas in other 530 patients no urinoma was detected (group II). Gender, age, size, side and localization of the stone, hydronephrosis, fever, sepsis, urinary tract infections (UTIs),

Ureteral fibroepithelial polyps with calculi: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Fibroepithelial polyps of the ureter are benign tumors arising from the mesodermal tissue in the ureteral wall. Their etiology remains unknown. Hematuria and obstructive urinary symptoms are the most common findings. The treatment of choice is endoscopic resection, and the prognosis for patients with these lesions is excellent. CASE PRESENTATION: We present three cases of fibroepithelial polyps associated with calculi in the distal part of the ureter. The patients were all women, aged 20, 45 and 52 years. Two patients were suffering from flank pain and dysuria while one patient

Intracorporeal pneumatic lithotripsy for ureteral and vesical calculi.

To evaluate the effectiveness of pneumatic lithotripsy, 92 patients with 98 lower or mid-ureteric calculi and 8 with vesical calculi were treated with pneumatic lithotripsy (Swiss Lithoclast) under spinal anaesthesia. Successful stone fragmentation was achieved in 96 patients. In two patients their stones migrated to the upper ureter and renal pelvis during the procedure and so they were referred for extra corporeal shock wave lithotripsy. Total ureteral avulsion occurred in one patient and in another case attempts to dilate the stenotic ureteral orifice failed. In both cases, ureterolithotomy

[Ureteral polyp occurring as renal dysfunction with contralateral ureteral calculi: a case report].

A 46-year-old man was admitted to our hospital complaining of macroscopic hematuria with dull pain in the right flank. Laboratory finding showed renal dysfunction and abdominal ultrasound sonograph revealed bilateral hydronephrosis (right > left). Retrograde pyelography showed left ureteral calculi and a filling defect in the middle portion of the right ureter. Renal function improved after bilateral single-J ureteral stent placement. Selective wash cytology of right renal pelvis was class II. Ureteroscopy demonstrated right ureteral obstruction with smooth-surfaced protruded tumor and cold cu

The impact of transurethral ureteroscopy on the management of ureteric calculi.

Transurethral ureteroscopy has now been used in an attempt to retrieve ureteric calculi in 48 patients. Six stones were located in the upper ureter, 11 in the middle and 31 in the lower third of the ureter. Successful retrieval was achieved in 27 patients at the first attempt and in 4 at a second ureteroscopy. Of the 17 failures, 7 patients have required open ureterolithotomy, 3 percutaneous nephrolithotomy and the remainder passed their stones either after in situ disintegration or ureteric meatotomy. There have been no serious complications to date. Transurethral ureteroscopy should now be r

Laparoscopic techniques for removal of renal and ureteral calculi.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although most ureteral and renal stones are managed using endourologic techniques or shockwave lithotripsy in daily clinical practice, stone surgery has not completely disappeared. The increasing experience with laparoscopy in urology poses the question of whether urolithiasis may be an indication for laparoscopy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of the literature was conducted to point out the indications and techniques of laparoscopic stone surgery. RESULTS: Indications for stone surgery are anatomic abnormalities, such as horseshoe kidneys, malrotated kidneys, or ec

Percutaneous nephrostomy in the management of ureteral and renal calculi.

A percutaneous nephrostomy tract can serve both to decompress the renal pelvis and as a route for dissolving renal stones and assisting in basket retrieval of ureteral stones. These techniques are especially valuable in patients who are poor operative risks.

Ureteral calculi secondary to a gradually migrated acupuncture needle.

We herein presented a case of calculi secondary to a migrated acupuncture needle. A 74-year-old woman with a history of acupuncture therapy for lumbago was referred to our hospital for treatment of ureteral and renal pelvic calculi. Abdominal multi-detector computed tomography scans showed ipsilateral hydronephrosis and two calculi secondary to a migrated acupuncture needle. First, a percutaneous nephrolithotomy was performed to extract two calculi and fine needle fragments from the pelvis. Subsequently, residual needle fragments and calculi in the ureter were then removed by flexible transure

[Ureteral calculi. In situ ESWL treatment with booster technique].

After treatment of more than 3000 kidney and ureteral stones with the Siemens Lithostar Multiline the results of the first 1400 ureteral stone treatments using the "Booster technique" and 3-month follow-up findings are reported. There was a disintegration rate of 98% directly after treatment; 1 week after "Booster technique" treatment 96% of the patients were free of stones and without any symptoms. The 3-month follow-up showed a stone-free rate of 97%. Only in 13% of the cases auxiliary procedures were necessary, 7% of them before extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and 6% after ESWL

In situ extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for ureteral calculi.

We reviewed our experience with in situ extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy for ureteral stones in 30 patients. The Siemens Lithostar unit was used for stone disintegration and no attempts were made to manipulate the calculi back into the kidney. During the study period 15 patients presented with upper, 9 with mid and 6 with lower ureteral calculi. The mean stone size was 5 x 12 mm. The success rates in stone removal, hospitalization, anesthesia, average number of shocks and kilovolts used were analyzed. Complete removal of all calculous material was obtained in 86.6% of the patients after 3

Ureteral calculi in children: review of 50 consecutive cases.

Fifty children presenting with ureteral calculi over a twenty-year period were studied retrospectively. There were 35 boys and 15 girls, with a mean age of five and a half years. Nineteen patients had a urinary tract anomaly: 11 had an obstructed megaureter, and 8 had previously undergone urinary tract surgery. Forty-four children had infection stones and the remaining 6 oxalate calculi. Infected urine was found in 35; the infecting organism was a Proteus species in 23. Metabolic abnormalities were detected in 2 children. Operative removal of the stones was done in 39 patients, and in the rema

Complete ureteral duplication with occult calculi: A case report.

Duplication of the kidney and ureter is a relatively rare congenital malformation compared with other systemic malformations. It is even rarer for the duplicate to have stones inside; therefore, the present study reports the case of a patient with complete repetitive ureteral malformations combined with occult stones who showed marked improvement in symptoms and good recovery after surgical treatment. The patient received a timely diagnosis and achieved a good treatment outcome. The patient was satisfied with the treatment and had a good follow-up. Early and accurate diagnosis and timely treat

Electrohydraulic lithotripsy of upper ureteral calculi with semirigid ureteroscope.

Forty-three patients with single ureteral calculi located above the pelvic brim were treated by electrohydraulic lithotripsy (EHL) using a semirigid mini-ureteroscope. Of the 43 calculi, 36 (84%) were fragmented in one procedure. Six calculi (14%) were pushed back to the renal pelvis and treated successfully by complementary extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL). The total success rate of ureteroscopic manipulation thus was 98%. The operation time (mean 26.4 minutes) and postoperative hospital stay (mean 2.53 days) were relatively short. Complications were limited to four (9%) minor perfo

Prospective evaluation and classification of endoscopic findings for ureteral calculi.

Difficulty in performing ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL) depends on endoscopic findings surrounding calculi. In this multicentre prospective cohort study of 185 patients with a single ureteral stone who underwent ureteroscopic lithotripsy registered in the SMART study between January 2014 and February 2017, we established a classification of endoscopic findings and analysed risk factors for ureteral changes. We evaluated endoscopic findings (oedema, polyps, ureteral mucosa-stone adherence, and distal ureteric tightness) based on the SMART classification. Operative time and ureteral injuries w

[The treatment of patients with ureteral calculi by ureteroscopy and intracorporeal lithotripsy].

Ureteroscopy with endocorporeal urinary stone lithotripsy (EUSL) implies an "in situ" stone fragmentation including or not a basket extraction of the fragments. EUSL needs three conditions: ureteronephroscopy (antegrade or retrograde), sources of energy (ultrasonic, electrohydraulic, laser), extraction devices (basket, grasping forceps). The paper reports the data on 120 ureteral stones treated by ureteroscopy and laser lithotripsy with an overall effect of 84%.

Rapid localization of ureteral calculi in patients with renal colic by "ultrasonic ureteral crossing sign".

In this study, the term "ultrasonic ureteral crossing sign" is defined, and the diagnostic accuracy of this sign in the rapid localization of ureteral calculi is assessed. Between January 2017 and June 2018, 535 patients underwent ultrasound examination for suspected ureteral calculi. The "ultrasonic ureteral crossing sign" was classified as either positive or negative and correlated with the location of ureteral calculi. Of the 451 patients who were ultimately diagnosed with ureteral calculi, 263 patients had a positive sign, of which 258 patients had distal ureteral calculi, and 188 patients

In situ lithotripsy of ureteral calculi: review of 261 cases.

The authors report 261 cases of single ureteral calculi treated with in situ lithotripsy after retrograde manipulations had failed. Previous reports have indicated that extracorporeal lithotripsy of impacted ureteral calculi has not been highly successful. Two hundred five of the calculi were located in the proximal ureter, above the sacroiliac joint; 27 were in the presacral ureter, overlying the bony pelvis; and 29 were in the juxtavesicular ureter, below the inferior border of the sacroiliac joint. Retrograde ureteral catheters were in place during lithotripsy for 215 calculi. Two hundred f
