Ultrasonographic detection of adrenal gland tumor and ureterolithiasis in a guinea pig.

A 5-year-old guinea pig was presented to the University of Berne Small Animal Radiology Department for an ultrasound examination of the abdomen to confirm a suspected diagnosis of Cushing's syndrome. The patient had bilateral alopecia, was apathic and obese. Ultrasonographically, a tumor of the left adrenal gland, obstruction of the left ureter by an ureterolith, as well as hydronephrosis of the left kidney were detected. During surgery to relieve the ureteral obstruction the adrenal gland tumor was removed. The guinea pig died post-operatively due to blood loss. The left adrenal gland tumor w

Is conservative management safe in patients with acute ureterolithiasis and perirenal stranding?

In patients presenting with ureterolithiasis, perirenal stranding is frequently observed in non-contrast computed tomography. Because perirenal stranding may be caused by tears in the collecting system, previous studies have described an increased risk of infectious complications and suggested broad empiric antibiotic therapy and immediate decompressing of the upper urinary tract. We hypothesized that these patients can also be managed conservatively. Therefore, we retrospectively identified patients with ureterolithiasis and perirenal stranding and compared diagnostic and treatment characteri

Epidemiological and imaging features that can affect the detection of ureterolithiasis on ultrasound.

OBJECTIVE: To identify, in patients with clinical suspicion of ureterolithiasis, epidemiological and imaging features that affect calculus detection on ultrasound, as well as to compare ultrasound with multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We searched our database for patients who underwent ultrasound, followed by MDCT (if the ultrasound was negative), for suspected ureterolithiasis in an emergency setting. Patients were divided into three groups: positive ultrasound (US+); negative ultrasound/positive MDCT (US-/MDCT+); and negative ultrasound/negative MDCT (US-/MDC

A case of calcified ureteritis cystica: an indiscernible condition from ureterolithiasis.

Ureteritis cystica is characterized by formation of multiple cysts in the wall of the renal pelvis or ureter. The clinical course is usually slow, but manifests if the cysts cause infection or obstruction. Stones are further complication to the disease. In this case study, we present a 39-year-old male originally referred with renal colic and misdiagnosed as ureterolithiasis due to the calcifiying cysts.

Unenhanced helical CT of ureterolithiasis: incidence of secondary urinary tract findings.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence of secondary signs of obstruction in patients with ureteral stones on unenhanced helical CT scans. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Three hundred consecutive patients with suspected renal colic referred by the emergency department for an unenhanced helical CT scan were evaluated. One hundred and thirty two patients with ureteric calculi were viewed prospectively for the secondary signs of obstruction, which include hydronephrosis, hydroureter, perinephric stranding, nephromegaly, periureteral edema and difference in attenuation between acutely obstructed kidney and

Facilitated ureteroscopy using DJ stent implantation in ureterolithiasis: A retrospective study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of preoperative double J (DJ) stent insertion on outcomes of retrograde semi-rigid ureteroscopy (URS) in patients with upper small and medium sized ureteral stones. METHODS: Between April 2018 and September 2019, we retrospectively reviewed the medical register of Hillel Yaffe tertiary reference Centre (HYMC) for patients who had undergone retrograde semi-rigid URS for urolithiasis. Patients were separated into two groups depending on whether they accepted the DJ stent placement before URS (Group A) or not (Group B). Operating time, stone clearance rate, n

Health related quality of life in ureteral stone patients: post-ureterolithiasis.

Ureteral stones disease is among the most painful and prevalent among urologic disorders that can substantially impact health-related quality of life (HRQoL), particularly in patients with a history of recurrent stones. The aim of the study is to assess the QoL in patients with ureteral calculi after surgical intervention and identifying the most significant factors that could impact their QoL. The target population included two groups: post-lithotripsy patients and comparator group comprising healthy individuals selected from the general population. Both groups were matched for age and gender

CONTACT ULTRASOUND LITHOTRIPSY DURING URETEROLITHIASIS THERAPY. AN ANALYSIS OF LATE POSTOPERATIVE COMPLICATIONS.

Nowadays, ureteroscopy is highly effective and minimally invasive therapeutic and diagnostic method which is not connected with the risk of complications and with correlation of intracorporal lithotripsy and it is optimal at ureterolithiasis. The aim of the research is to analyze the causes and the character of late postoperative complications which occur in patients with ureterolithiasis after ureterorenoscopy and contact lithotripsy using ultrasound lithitriptor. After ureterorenoscopy with contact lithotripsy or lithoextraction from 1372 patients in 96 (6,9%) cases further postoperative com

Clinical relevance of seasonal changes in the prevalence of ureterolithiasis in the diagnosis of renal colic.

Ureterolithiasis is one of the most frequently diagnosed urologic diseases worldwide. Its annual incidence in Japan increased three-fold from 1965 to 2005. Ureterolithiasis incidence is affected by numerous factors, including race, sex, body weight, fluid intake, and climate. Here, we aimed to address the latter by considering the effect of seasonal variation on stone incidence and incorporating this information into a predictive model for differential diagnosis of ureteral stone from other conditions with similar presentations. We retrospectively identified 491 patients in our emergency depar

Ultra-Low-Dose CT: An Effective Follow-Up Imaging Modality for Ureterolithiasis.

Background and Purpose: Classically, abdominal X-ray (KUB), ultrasound, or a combination of both have been routinely used for ureteral stone surveillance after initial diagnosis. More recently, ultra-low-dose CT (ULD CT) has emerged as a CT technique that reduces radiation dose while maintaining high sensitivity and specificity for urinary stone detection. We aim to evaluate our initial experience with ULD CT for patients with ureterolithiasis, measuring real-world radiation doses and stone detection performance. Methods: We reviewed all ULD CT scans performed at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto

A pediatric case of ureterolithiasis due to cystinuria accompanied by acute appendicitis; a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Acute abdominal pain, a chief complaint frequently seen in the emergency department, can be triggered by a vast range of conditions. Although ureterolithiasis is a less common cause in children, renal colic can be caused by calculi due to hereditary metabolic diseases among patients in those age groups. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report a 12-year-old girl with abdominal pain who was diagnosed with concurrent acute appendicitis and ureterolithiasis due to cystinuria. Acute appendicitis was successfully treated with cefmetazole, and the calculus was eliminated after adequate fluid l

Successful Treatment of Obstructive Ureterolithiasis with Medical Expulsive Therapy Including Tamsulosin in a Dog.

Ureterolithiasis is a common cause of ureteral obstruction in dogs, often leading to kidney injury. Medical expulsive therapy (MET) using α-adrenergic antagonists has been proposed as a nonsurgical treatment option in selected cases and is thought to facilitate ureteral stone passage by reducing ureteral smooth muscle tone. A 9-year-old castrated male Chihuahua weighing 1.78 kg was presented with anorexia. Physical examination revealed 7% dehydration and pale mucous membranes. Serum biochemistry demonstrated severe azotemia, with markedly elevated symmetric dimethylarginine (>100 μg/dL; refere

Isolated hematuria with ureterolithiasis in an infant with late-onset vitamin K deficiency bleeding.

Late-onset vitamin K deficiency bleeding (VKDB) usually manifests as intracranial or gastrointestinal hemorrhage, and hematuria is rarely reported. We describe a 2-month-old, exclusively breastfed male infant who had received vitamin K prophylaxis at birth and developed gross hematuria on hospital day 9 while recovering from rotavirus gastroenteritis and cefotaxime-treated aspiration pneumonia. His prothrombin time was 136.9 s (INR 12.6), and activated partial thromboplastin time was 71.1 s. Factors II, VII, IX, and X were each <10%. Urine culture was sterile, and computed tomography demonstra

Risk factors for concomitant positive midstream urine culture in patients presenting with symptomatic ureterolithiasis.

In patients with symptomatic ureterolithiasis, immediate treatment of concomitant urinary tract infection (UTI) may prevent sepsis. However, urine cultures require at least 24 h to confirm or exclude UTI, and therefore, clinical variables may help to identify patients who require immediate empirical broad-spectrum antibiotics and surgical intervention. Therefore, we divided a consecutive cohort of 705 patients diagnosed with symptomatic ureterolithiasis at a single institution between 2011 and 2017 into a training (80%) and a testing cohort (20%). A machine-learning-based variable selection ap

Residual Intravenous Contrast Mimicking a Ureteral Stent on Noncontrast Computed Tomography in a Patient With Ureterolithiasis.

This case describes a 53-year-old male patient presenting with right-sided abdominal pain and acute kidney injury (AKI) who retained intravenous (IV) contrast within the ureter from a previous image 24 hours prior at a different hospital that was initially mistaken for a calcified ureteral stent after presenting to a different hospital without the patient initially disclosing his previous hospital stay. This created diagnostic uncertainty and prompted subspecialty consultations for a device the patient had never received. The patient subsequently passed a ureteral calculus with resolution of s

Construction and validation of a nomogram to predict urosepsis in patients with symptomatic ureterolithiasis after ureteroscopic lithotripsy.

To explore the independent risk factors for urosepsis in patients with symptomatic ureterolithiasis undergoing ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URSL) and to construct a clinically applicable predictive model for the early identification of high-risk patients to reduce the possibility of postoperative urosepsis. This study included 944 patients with symptomatic ureterolithiasis treated with URSL, and these patients were randomly divided into a training set and a validation set at a 7:3 ratio. Independent risk factors were screened by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses, and predic

[Subcutaneous ureteral bypass devices as a treatment option for bilateral ureteral obstruction in a cat with ureterolithiasis].

A 6-year-old female spayed Domestic Shorthair cat was presented with acute lethargy, dehydration, marked azotemia, metabolic acidosis, left-sided renomegaly, and bilateral hydronephrosis. Ureterolithiasis and ureteral obstruction were suspected based on further diagnostics including abdominal sonography. Medical treatment was not successful. Fluoroscopically guided antegrade pyelography confirmed the diagnosis of bilateral ureteral obstruction due to ureterolithiasis. Subcutaneous ureteral bypass (SUB) devices were placed bilaterally, followed by close patient monitoring. Frequent reassessment

Renal pelvic rupture, intrapelvic haematoma and retroperitoneal haemorrhage associated with obstructive ureterolithiasis in a cat.

A neutered female cat presented with a 9-day history of hyporexia and depression. The referring veterinarian had identified moderate non-regenerative anaemia, haematuria and suspected unilateral obstructive ureterolithiasis. Subsequent ultrasonography revealed moderate distension of the left renal pelvis with echogenic material, ureteral distension and ureterolithiasis. A partial ureteral obstruction was suspected. After 4 days of medical management, there was further distension of the renal pelvis with well-delineated echogenic material and an accumulation of perinephric fluid. A left nephrou
