[Bladder neoplasm after nephroureterectomy for upper urinary tract tumor. Does distal ureter surgery influx on the evolution?].

OBJECTIVE: To compare evolution in patients with urothelial upper tract tumor (UUTT) in whom we performed the classic open approach to the distal ureter with those in whom whe performed the endoscopic approach. We study the bladder recurrences in each group and the factors which may influx on the evolution. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective review of nephroureterectomies in our department in the last 20 years. Group A (n:24): double incision (lumbar and pelvic incision), Group B (n:29): endoscopical approach of the distal ureter and classic lumbar incision. A descriptive study is first perf

Urothelial neoplasms of the urinary bladder occurring in young adult and pediatric patients: a comprehensive review of literature with implications for patient management.

Bladder urothelial carcinoma is typically a disease of older individuals and rarely occurs below the age of 40 years. There is debate and uncertainty in the literature regarding the clinicopathologic characteristics of bladder urothelial neoplasms in younger patients compared with older patients, although no consistent age criteria have been used to define "younger" age group categories. Use of the World Health Organization 2004/International Society of Urological Pathology 1998 grading nomenclature and recent molecular studies highlight certain unique features of bladder urothelial neoplasms

Multiple primary malignant neoplasms of the glottis, renal pelvis, urinary bladder, oral floor, prostate, and esophagus in a Japanese male patient: a case report.

Owing to recent advances in diagnostic and surgical techniques for cancer, a patient diagnosed with two or more neoplasms is not rare. We report on the case of a 58-year-old male with multiple primary malignant neoplasms, who suffered from three histological types of malignant neoplasm in six organs, namely the glottis, renal pelvis, urinary bladder, oral floor, prostate, and esophagus in chronological order. The first neoplasm was a squamous cell carcinoma of the glottis diagnosed in 2006. The second and third neoplasms were urothelial carcinomas of the right renal pelvis and urinary bladder,

Carcinogenicity of saccharin.

Saccharin is carcinogenic for the urinary bladder in rats and mice, and most likely is carcinogenic in human beings. The neoplasms of the urinary bladder are malignant and invade and metastasize. Male rats are more susceptible to urinary bladder carcinogenesis than female rats. Rats exposed as fetuses develop neoplasms more readily than rats exposed as weanlings. The lesions in the urinary bladder go through the stages of hyperplasia, hyperplastic nodules, and later carcinomas. The male of the human species ingesting saccharin, as for rats, is more susceptible to carcinogenesis of the urinary

Lymphoma affecting the urinary bladder in three dogs and a cat.

Three dogs and one cat with lymphoma affecting the urinary bladder are reported and the findings on abdominal radiographs and ultrasound are described. Mural lesions representing lymphoma affecting the urinary bladder were identified ultrasonographically in all animals. The most common complications associated with urinary bladder lymphoma were hydronephrosis and hydroureter. In two patients contrast radiography was necessary to detect leakage of urine in the peritoneal and retroperitoneal space. The radiographic and ultrasonographic signs were similar to those reported with other urinary blad

Mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine epithelial neoplasm of muscle invasive bladder cancer: a clinicopathologic case study.

Mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine epithelial neoplasms are rare malignant neoplasms that may occur in the bladder with highly aggressive behavior. Because of its worse prognosis, when compared to the pure urothelial carcinoma without the neuroendocrine component, the bladder mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine epithelial neoplasm may be considered a distinct clinicopathologic entity. We present a case of mixed neuroendocrine-nonneuroendocrine epithelial neoplasm occurring in the urinary bladder of an elderly female with a personal history of chronic kidney disease, drug-resistant urina

Two-year carcinogenicity study in rats with a nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor.

Administration of lersivirine, a nonnucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor, daily by oral gavage to Sprague-Dawley rats for up to 2 yr was associated with decreased survival, decreased body weights, and an increase in neoplasms and related proliferative lesions in the liver, thyroid, kidney, and urinary bladder. Thyroid follicular adenoma and carcinoma, the associated thyroid follicular hypertrophy/hyperplasia, hepatocellular adenoma/adenocarcinoma, altered cell foci, and hepatocellular hypertrophy were consistent with lersivirine-related induction of hepatic microsomal enzymes. [Urothelial neoplasia as a late complication of transitional-cell carcinoma of the bladder].

We evaluated the long term incidence of lower urinary tract neoplasms in patients with primary transitional bladder carcinoma. 8 patients had lower urinary tract neoplasm after a median elapse of time of 44 months (range 28 to 70). In 5 patients wa present vesicoureteral reflux. All the patients were undergone trial of BCG after the first recurrence of bladder carcinoma. We suppose that the vesicoureteral reflux may be the possible cause of ureteral neoplasm onset. Because of patients with primary bladder tumors are at the risk for lower urinary tract neoplasm, we suggest the need regular and

Bladder Leiomyoma: A Rare Differential and a Potential Pitfall in the Evaluation for a Bladder Mass in 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose-Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography.

18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18FDG PET/CT) has shown an increasing role in the evaluation of urinary bladder cancer, though benign pathological processes of the urinary bladder can also result in increased FDG uptake. Leiomyomas of urinary bladder are benign mesenchymal neoplasms and a very rare bladder tumor comprising <0.5% of all bladder tumors. Here, we present the low-grade 18FDG uptake in urinary bladder leiomyoma on PET/CT done for the clinical suspicion of bladder cancer, which can be a rare differential for bladder carcinoma.

Pearls and Pitfalls in Diagnosing Pediatric Urinary Bladder Masses.

Urinary bladder masses are rare in children, and the associated histologic features and prognoses in this population are different from those in adults. Most children with urinary bladder masses present with lower urinary tract symptoms, which may include hematuria, dysuria, frequent urination, and urgency to urinate. However, some of these masses may be identified incidentally or involve generic symptoms such as abdominal distention. In general, pediatric bladder tumors can be divided into those that originate from the bladder epithelium, known as urothelial neoplasms, and mesenchymal bladder

Urothelial neoplasms of the kidney and ureter. An epidemiologic, pathologic, and clinical review.

Urothelial neoplasms occur with varying frequency at different sites along the urothelial tract. Approximately 5% of urothelial neoplasms occur in the kidneys and ureters, while the majority of these tumors occur in the urinary bladder. Consequently, urothelial disease of the bladder has been evaluated to a greater extent than urothelial tumors elsewhere, and many of the features of bladder urothelial neoplasms have been applied to these tumors at other sites. While the classification of urothelial neoplasms is the same for tumors in the bladder, kidney, and ureter, there are some features of

Müllerianosis of the Urinary Bladder: A Rare Condition Which Mimics Neoplasia.

Müllerianosis of the urinary bladder is an extremely rare, benign condition defined by the presence of at least two of the three müllerian-derived components (endosalpinx, endometrium, and endocervix) in the lamina propria and muscularis propria of the urinary bladder. It frequently mimics neoplastic condition, either malignant or benign. Here, we present a case of cystic müllerianosis of urinary bladder, which was clinically thought to be a urinary bladder neoplasm.

Bladder carcinosarcoma: A case report with review of the literature.

Carcinosarcoma of the urinary bladder is a rare neoplasm that is histologically composed of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. The etiology of sarcomatoid tumors is unclear, but smoking and history of previous radiotherapy or chemotherapy may lead to bladder disorders and to the formation of sarcomatoid carcinoma. These neoplasms behave as highly aggressive tumors and optimal treatment is uncertain. Herein, we report a case of sarcomatoid carcinoma of urinary bladder presenting as a giant intravesical mass in a 61-year-old man complaining of macroscopic hematuria.

Concurrent müllerianosis of the urinary bladder and the umbilicus presenting with umbilical bleeding: a rare case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Müllerianosis is a very rare neoplasm composed of two or three Müllerian derived tissues (endosalpinx, endometrium and endocervix). We report the first case of concurrent müllerianosis of the urinary bladder and the umbilicus presenting with umbilical bleeding. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old Asian premesopausal female, gravida 1, para 1, presented with intermittent umbilical bleeding. An umbilical nodule and a bladder tumor on the posterior wall of the urinary bladder were identified. She underwent transurethral resection of the bladder tumor and excision of the umbilical nodule

Solitary fibrous tumor of the urinary bladder: report of a case with long-term follow-up and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a neoplasm typically arising in the pleura. Yet, extrapleural cases have been described and are a common cause of diagnostic pitfalls, especially when met in unusual sites. We report the clinical and pathological features of a case of SFT arising in a rather unusual site, the urinary bladder, the seventh reported to date in the English literature and the first with long term follow-up. Differential diagnosis from other spindle cell neoplasms of the bladder can be problematic. Prognosis of this neoplasm is obscure and long-term follow-up is required for all cases

10-cm mature cystic teratoma of the bladder in 48-year-old female misdiagnosed as bladder calculus: Management with robotic partial cystectomy.

Cystic teratomas are a common ovarian neoplasm that are rarely found in other locations of the body, namely the sacrococcygeal region and anterior mediastinum. Localization to the urinary bladder is exceedingly rare, with only a few cases documented in the literature. Cystic teratomas are usually asymptomatic and found incidentally, but localization to the bladder can present as irritative lower urinary tract symptoms and/or mimic urinary tract calculi. We report the rare case of a mature cystic teratoma of the urinary bladder, presenting as foul-smelling urine with recurrent urinary tract inf

Is there a promoting role for artificial sweeteners in the evolution of bladder cancer? A meta-analysis of current literature.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary bladder cancer is a frequent neoplasia in the urogenital system. Ageing and smoking are the two main risk factors, however, some chemical agents such as artificial sweeteners could act as initiators or promoters. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: After identifying trends in scientific literature, we conducted a wide search in PubMed database and a meta-analysis was performed on extracted data to determine the role of artificial sweeteners in the development of urinary bladder cancer. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Twenty-one full reports were enrolled from screening of PubMed database into fi
