UNLABELLED: The mechanics of urine during its transport from the renal pelvis to the bladder is of great interest for urologists. The knowledge of the different physical variables and their interrelationship, both in physiologic movements and pathologies, will help a better diagnosis and treatment. The objective of this chapter is to show the physics principles and their most relevant basic relations in urine transport, and to bring them over the clinical world. For that, we explain the movement of urine during peristalsis, ureteral obstruction and in a ureter with a stent. This explanation is

Females and males differ significantly in gross anatomy and physiology of the lower urinary tract, and these differences are commonly discussed in the medical and scientific literature. However, less attention is dedicated to investigating the varied development, function, and biology between females and males on a cellular level. Recognizing that cell biology is not uniform, especially in the lower urinary tract of females and males, is crucial for providing context and relevance for diverse fields of biomedical investigation. This review serves to characterize the current understanding of bi

This report deals with the histologic and gross anatomy of the upper urinary tract (calyces, pelvis, and ureter) as well as the nerve supply to this region. It also covers the physiological transport of urine from the kidneys to the bladder, which is reviewed on the basis of experimental and clinical studies. A pacemaker system present in the proximal calyces has been found to have an important physiological role in urine transport. However, clinical experience has shown that urine transport is not affected by surgery such as pyeloplasty and pyelolithotomy which impairs the activity of this pa

Urinary retention is a common problem, most often due to an anatomical lesion in the urinary tract causing obstruction, such as a urethral stricture or prostate enlargement. However, a subset of patients have no structural urological lesion, and so require neurological evaluation. We present a patient with acute urinary retention who was found to have chronic meningitis, and review the neurological causes for urinary retention.

Despite the development of molecular and cellular methods for examining physiological processes, the use of the whole animal model remains essential to advance knowledge regarding the integration and coordination of events associated with urinary tract function. The rat offers an inexpensive and versatile species to investigate bladder and urethral responses to drugs or pathology. Models for many disorders have been developed in rodents including diabetes, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, Parkinson's disease, bladder outlet obstruction, pain, and aging. This review examines methodologie

OBJECTIVES: The functions of the lower urinary tract (LUT) to store and periodically release urine are dependent on neural circuits in the brain and spinal cord. This paper reviews the central neural control of micturition and how disruption of this control can lead to bladder overactivity and incontinence.
METHODS: Neuroanatomic, electrophysiologic, and pharmacologic techniques have provided information about the neural circuitry and the neurotransmitters involved in the central nervous control of voiding. Experimental models of neural injury, including spinal cord transection, cerebral infa

This article reviews the basic anatomy and physiology of the genitourinary system and disorders commonly encountered in the primary care setting. The role of the nurse-midwife in the assessment and treatment or referral of complaints of dysuria, hematuria, and incontinence is discussed. The treatment of nonpregnant women with cystitis is addressed; symptoms associated with pelvic relaxation are discussed, and a management scheme for teaching effective pelvic floor exercises is presented.

ICC are found in both the upper and lower urinary tract. They are not found in the ureter itself but are confined to the lamina propria of the renal pelvis and pelvi-calyceal junction. They do not appear to have a primary pacemaker role (this is ascribed to atypical smooth muscle cells in the same location) but rather conduct and amplify the pacemaker signals generated by the atypical smooth muscle cells. In the bladder, ICC are widely distributed in the sub-urothelial region, in the lamina propria and at the margins of the detrusor smooth muscle bundles. Again they appear not to have a pacema
