Ursolic acid (UA) exists in a variety of medicinal plants. UA exhibits antimicrobial activity against several microorganisms; however, little is known regarding the potential antifungal effect of UA on Cryptococcus neoformans (C. neoformans). The antifungal and antibiofilm activities of UA on C. neoformans H99 were evaluated in this study. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of UA against C. neoformans H99 was determined by microdilution technique, and its action mode was elucidated by clarifying the variations in cell membrane integrity, capsule, and melanin production. Moreover, the inhib

Neuronal survival in multiple sclerosis (MS) and other demyelinating diseases depends on the preservation of myelin and remyelination of axons. Myelin protection is the main purpose to decrease myelin damage in the central nervous system (CNS). Ursolic acid (UA) as a natural product in apple is suggested to protect neural cells. This study is the first to demonstrate an effect for UA on CNS myelin loss induced by cuprizone toxin. In the current study, we hypothesized that daily treatment with UA in drinking water (1 mg/mL) prevents myelin damage by 6 weeks administration of CPZ in mice pellet

Leishmaniasis affects around 12 million people worldwide and is estimated to cause the ninth-largest disease burden. There are three main forms of the disease, visceral (VL), cutaneous (CL), and mucocutaneous (MCL), leading to more than one million new cases every year and several thousand deaths. Current treatments based on chemically synthesized molecules are far from ideal. In this study, we have tested the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of ursolic acid (UA), a multifunctional triterpenoid with well-known antitumoral, antioxidant, and antimicrobial effects on different Leishmania strains. Ursolic acid, a plant-derived pentacyclic triterpenoid with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and other bioactive properties, holds significant potential for use in nutritional supplements and drug development. However, its extraction from medicinal plants is inefficient due to low yield and dependence on seasonality and geography. Herein, we use modular metabolic engineering to enhance ursolic acid production in Saccharomyces cerevisiae by dividing the biosynthetic pathway into five modules. First, the heterologous ursolic acid biosynthesis module was established using Catharanthus roseus α-amy

Ursolic acid (UA) has a wide range of biological activities and is extracted primarily from natural products. However, conventional quantification methods require derivatization or chromatographic separation, which are tedious and time-consuming. In this study, a rapid and accurate quantitative proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-qNMR) method was established for the direct quantification of UA in loquat leaf extracts. By optimizing the NMR acquisition parameters, 1H-qNMR achieved a single-sample runtime of 5 min with high accuracy and precision. This method was also applied to optimize UA ex
