AIMS: Diabetes distress is common among adults with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) and is associated with poorer psychological and medical outcomes. While diabetes distress occurs across the lifespan, less is known about how its sources differ by age and how patient input can inform intervention development.
METHODS: Using a user-centred design (UCD) approach, we conducted six virtual group sessions with adults with T1D to inform the development of a cognitive-behavioural intervention targeting diabetes distress. Participants included young adults aged 18-34 recruited from an academic medical centre a

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is the world's most prevalent cancer. Although the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer in the United States is 91%, the stress and uncertainty of survivorship can often lead to symptoms of depression and anxiety. With nearly half of breast cancer survivors living with stress and symptoms of depression and anxiety, there are a significant number of unmet supportive care needs. New and potentially scalable approaches to meeting these supportive care needs are warranted.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to engage breast cancer survivors and acceptance and commitment thera

The objective of this study was to design a user-centered mobile health (mHealth) application for individuals with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and evaluate its design features and effectiveness for use by doctors. Prior to designing, our team undertook a discovery process that involved creating personas, conducting a competitor analysis and heuristic evaluation of existing apps, along with interviews with acid reflux patients. Then, we created a low-fidelity prototype, which was revised on the basis of several rounds of user testing. During the design phase, each round of user testi

BACKGROUND: Nausea and vomiting are common and distressing side effects for children receiving chemotherapy. Limited evidence is available to guide antiemetic recommendations; therefore, prospective and reliable evaluation of antiemetic efficacy is needed. Smartphone apps can be used to effortlessly and precisely collect patient-reported outcomes in real time.
OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to develop a smartphone app to monitor nausea and vomiting episodes in pediatric cancer patients aged 0 to 18 years and to test its usability and adherence to its use.
METHODS: We used a user-centered desig

Autonomy and social inclusion can reveal themselves everyday challenges for people experiencing mobility impairments. These people can benefit from technical aids such as power wheelchairs to access mobility and overcome social exclusion. However, power wheelchair driving is a challenging task which requires good visual, cognitive and visuo-spatial abilities. Besides, a power wheelchair can cause material damage or represent a danger of injury for others or oneself if not operated safely. Therefore, training and repeated practice are mandatory to acquire safe driving skills to obtain power whe

Over the last decade, the use of wearable exoskeletons for human locomotion assistance has become more feasible. The VariLeg powered lower limb robotic exoskeleton is an example of such systems, potentially enabling paraplegic users to perform upright activities of daily living. The acceptance of this type of robotic assistive technologies is often still affected by limited usability, in particular regarding the physical interface between the exoskeleton and the user (here referred to as pilot). In this study, we proposed and evaluated a novel pilot attachment system (PAS), which was designed

Graph literacy is essential to STEM education, yet visually impaired (VI) students face persistent barriers not only in interpreting graphs but also in creating them. Existing tactile tools often offer limited layouts, inconsistent feedback, or require sighted assistance. This restricts opportunities for independent graph authoring. In Thailand, imported embossers and printers are costly and scarce, while low-tech alternatives lack portability and tactile precision. This study developed a low-cost, roller-based graph-paper embosser through a three-iteration User-Centered Design (UCD) process.

BACKGROUND: Globally, 1 in 3 people live with health conditions that could be improved with rehabilitation. Ideally, this is provided by trained professionals delivering evidence-based dose, intensity, and content of rehabilitation for optimal recovery. The widely acknowledged inability of global health care providers to deliver recommended levels of rehabilitation creates an opportunity for technological innovation. Design processes that lack close consideration of users' needs and budgets, however, mean that many rehabilitation technologies are neither useful nor used. To address this proble

Background/Objectives: National guidelines include recommendations for cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention, but gaps in prevention still exist. Clinical decision support (CDS) tools may be an avenue for delivering preventive care. The goal of this project was to understand how clinicians approach primary prevention of CVD and to determine barriers and facilitators in delivery of primary preventive care with and beyond a CDS tool. Methods: A user-centered design approach including a cross-sectional survey and qualitative interviews was deployed in a health system in Central and Northern Cal

BACKGROUND: Hard hats are among the personal protective equipment (PPE) used in many industries to reduce the impact of any falling object on the skull and also to prevent head and brain injuries. However, the practice of wearing a safety helmet during working hours is still low. This is due to the physical discomfort perceived by safety helmet users.
OBJECTIVE: Given the unpopularity of the current hard hat, the general perception of workers concerning its use and its measurements are the determining factors in the development of a new hard hat.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted

The global prevalence of mental health disorders has created a substantial treatment gap. To support clinicians and increase access to care, researchers in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Virtual Reality (VR) have investigated technology-mediated psychotherapy for years. However, research about stakeholders' concerns and their readiness to use AI in psychotherapy remains scarce. This study focuses on a user-centered approach to accommodate patients' concerns and, based on the results, implement measures to foster self-disclosure and trust towards an embodied AI therapist in VR.
