BACKGROUND: 'Incarcerated gravid uterus' is a morbid complication that occurs in 1 in 3000 pregnancies. It is characterized by failure of a retropositioned uterus to become an abdominal organ between 12 to 14 weeks of gestation. If maternal symptoms develop or gestational age surpasses 14 to 16 weeks, replacement of a retropositioned uterus is recommended to reduce adverse outcomes. Previously described techniques for management include passive reduction, digital replacement, or more invasive methods such as laparoscopy, laparotomy, or sigmoidoscopy. These methods are either minimally effectiv

PURPOSE: This study investigated the hypothesis of early dehiscence of hysterorrhaphy as the initial stage of post-cesarean uterine scar defects, examining the possible influence of barbed suture in this process.
METHODS: This longitudinal, prospective, double-blind study included 54 pregnant women with no history of cesarean section, randomized into two suture groups: #0 polyglactin or #1 barbed PDS threads. Sutures were continuous, unlocked, involved the entire myometrium in a single layer, and included the endometrium. Tridimensional transvaginal ultrasonography was performed on the second

Uterine incarceration is a rare complication that usually occurs after the first trimester of pregnancy. It leads to increased maternal and/or fetal morbidity and mortality. Risk factors include retroversion of uterus and other pelvic abnormalities. Clinical presentation includes severe abdominal and pelvic pain symptoms. Patients can present with concurrent urinary symptoms due to increasing distortion of adjacent structures from the enlarging uterus. A high clinical suspicion of uterine incarceration is confirmed with ultrasound. More advanced imaging such as MRI can be used as an adjunct to

We show the sonographic and magnetic resonance imaging features of uterine incarceration. Clinical data and imaging findings were retrospectively reviewed for 8 confirmed cases identified by sonography from 2000 to 2010. Two patients had magnetic resonance imaging. Seven of 8 patients (87.5%) presented with abdominal pain; 4 of 8 (50.0%) also had urinary symptoms. All had a retroverted uterus with an elongated anterosuperiorly displaced or poorly visualized cervix on sonography. Magnetic resonance imaging showed similar features, but in both cases, the placental position was misinterpreted bec

BACKGROUND: Although retroversion of the uterus is a common finding, incarceration of the gravid uterus is a rare complication. It occurs usually between the 12th and 16th weeks of gestation and can lead to severe complications. No case of incarceration has been reported before in a multifetal gestation resulting from in vitro fertilization.
CASE: A 35-year-old woman with a triplet pregnancy presented at 9 weeks' gestation with acute urinary retention and was diagnosed with uterine incarceration. This diagnosis was confirmed by ultrasound and was resolved using transvaginal pressure under epi

RATIONALE: During a normal pregnancy, in the 1st trimester uterus lies in pelvis and enlarges in size as the pregnancy advances. By 14 weeks of gestation, the gravid uterus transforms from a pelvis to an abdominal organ and a retroverted uterus will correct as the fundus rises out of the pelvis and falls forward to its normal anatomical position. If the uterus remains in the pelvic cavity after 14 weeks of gestation, it is referred to as an incarcerated uterus.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 31-year-old gravida 3 para 0 woman was admitted to our obstetrics unit at 20 weeks' gestation with the complaint

BACKGROUND: Incarcerated uterus is a rare but serious complication.
CASES: Two women presented with second trimester urinary retention. Neither received a pelvic examination at presentation, which led to a delay in diagnosing the incarcerated uterus. Patient 1 had development of acute renal failure, hypertension, and edema. After uterine reduction there was rapid normalization of renal function, hypertension, and edema, but spontaneous rupture of membranes and intrauterine death occurred 12 hours later. Patient 2 had reduction under anesthetic and subsequently underwent cesarean delivery at t

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine in a sequential unselected sample of nonpregnant women whether an anteverted retroflexed uterine position develops after cesarean delivery and to see whether the amount of myometrial thinning related to cesarean delivery affects the development of an anteverted retroflexed uterine position.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Images from 641 consecutive transvaginal ultrasound examinations performed between 2008 and 2011 in which a uterus was present were reviewed and archived. The series was analyzed in three groups: patients who underwent cesarean de

We conducted a prospective, longitudinal study to assess the efficacy of a new laparoscopic hysteropexy technique in alleviating pelvic pain. Subjects were 50 women of reproductive age with chronic pelvic pain or dyspareunia in whom the only clinical finding was uterine retroversion who underwent laparoscopic uterine suspension using three-stitch technique. There were no intraoperative complications. The only postoperative complication was abdominal pain in one woman. The technique was effective in relieving symptoms in these patients. Of the 22 women who had associated infertility for longer

BACKGROUND: Adenomyosis is a common but frequently underdiagnosed gynecological disorder with significant implications for fertility and reproductive outcomes. Despite advances in imaging, accurate recognition remains challenging due to operator dependency, uterine anatomical variations, and ultrasound artifacts that may mimic disease features.
OBJECTIVE: To illustrate the sonographic spectrum of adenomyosis in subfertile women using two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) transvaginal ultrasound, evaluate age-related differences in ultrasound lesion morphology, and identify common di

BACKGROUND: The intrauterine device is a popular form of long-acting reversible contraception. Although generally safe, one of the most serious complications of intrauterine device use is uterine perforation. Risk factors for perforation include position of the uterus, force exerted during intrauterine device insertion, postpartum period, and breastfeeding. This case is important and needs to be reported because it highlights the need to assess risk factors for uterine perforation. It adds to the medical literature because it examines the relationship between position of the uterus and the loc

INTRODUCTION: An incarcerated gravid uterus (IGU) is a rare but serious obstetrical complication. Currently, there is no consensus on the optimal treatment when conservative reduction techniques have failed. Often, maneuvers with increased force are applied or a surgical intervention is the final reserved measure. Both are associated with an increased risk for the mother and child. In this technical report, we present a novel, minimally invasive technique to reduce an incarcerated uterus based on a biomechanical concept.
METHOD: To reduce an IGU, we apply saline fluid intraabdominally under s

BACKGROUND: Accurate diagnosis of retroflexed uterus in daily practice is essential because this condition is related to pelvic pain and deep endometriosis. Uterine flexion can be measured by transvaginal ultrasonography (TVUS), a cost-effective primary test, but the accuracy required for diagnosing retroflexed uterus is unclear. This study assessed the accuracy of TVUS for diagnosis of retroflexed uterus in patients with endometriosis and compared it with that of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) -the gold standard for measuring the uterine axis.
METHODS: The study included 123 patients who u

OBJECTIVE: To describe the biometric and morphological characteristics of the uterus through ultrasound (US) and Doppler on the uterine arteries in the initial and late puerperium after normal delivery.
METHODS: This was a prospective longitudinal study on full-term singleton pregnancies without complications. The patients were divided into two groups: 31 primiparous and 28 multiparous women. Two US exams were carried out with Doppler evaluation: firstly, within the initial 48 h; and secondly, between 31 and 50 days after childbirth. The US assessed the position and biometry of the uterus, ap

Although cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) lesions are considered to be not randomly distributed across the cervix, but predominantly in the anterior wall, the clinicopathological etiology remains unknown. Herein, we aimed to elucidate the relationship between quantitatively measured area of CIN2/3 and cervical cancer associated factors by retrospective cohort study. We analyzed 235 consecutive therapeutic conization specimens dissected as a single intact section to determine CIN2/3 area and its correlation with both clinical risk factors including human papillomavirus (HPV) status (sin

Incarceration of a retroverted uterus is a rare, but harmful obstetric complication increasing foetal mortality and maternal morbidity if untreated. In this case report, a pregnant woman at 16+3 presented with urine retention. Assessment showed an incarcerated uterus due to retroversion. To facilitate mobilisation of the uterus, she performed the yoga position Downward facing dog and had a permanent catheter inserted for 48 hours. The procedure was successful. This case report addresses the diagnosis, management, and risk of an incarcerated retroverted uterus in pregnancy. We aim to raise awar
