Burden of vaccine preventable diseases at large events.

BACKGROUND: Large events or mass gatherings (MGs) are known to amplify the risk of infectious diseases, many of which can be prevented by vaccination. In this review we have evaluated the burden of vaccine preventable diseases (VPDs) in MGs. METHODS: Major databases like PubMed and Embase, Google Scholar and pertinent websites were searched by using MeSH terms and text words; this was supplemented by hand searching. Following data abstraction, the pooled estimate of the burden of VPDs was calculated when possible; otherwise a narrative synthesis was conducted. RESULTS: In the past, at religi

Healthcare providers as sources of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Vaccine-preventable infectious diseases may be introduced into the healthcare setting and pose a serious risk to vulnerable populations including immunocompromised patients. Healthcare providers (HCPs) are exposed to these pathogens through their daily tasks and may serve as a reservoir for ongoing disease transmission in the healthcare setting. The primary method of protection from work-related infection risk is vaccination that protects not only an individual HCP from disease, but also subsequent patients in contact with that HCP. Individual HCPs and healthcare institutions must balance the

The impact of war on vaccine preventable diseases.

INTRODUCTION: During the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which lasted from 1992-1995, the functioning of all sectors was disturbed, including the health sector. The priority of the heath sector was treatment and less attention was paid to prevention, and this applies also to the Program of implementation of obligatory immunization, as one of the most important prevention measures. This program was conducted with difficulty and sometimes was completely interrupted because of the lack of necessary vaccines and the inability of adequate maintenance of the cold chain. It was difficult and sometimes

[The status of vaccine preventable diseases in Germany].

The European members of the World Health Assembly (WHO) adopted the goal of eliminating poliomyelitis by the year 2000 (certification 2003), tetanus of the newborn by 2005 and measles by 2007 (certification 2010). Regarding the reduction by 2010 diphtheria, hepatitis B, pertussis and rubella syndrome are in the foreground of discussions. As WHO-member Germany looks after these aims with growing acceptance, too. The current situation of the specific target illnesses is differentiated in the eastern and western part of Germany. While the final stage of certification for a polio-free region in th

Update: childhood vaccine-preventable diseases--United States, 1994.

In 1993, the Childhood Immunization Initiative (CII) established disease elimination goals for six childhood vaccine-preventable diseases. Specific goals for 1996 include elimination of indigenous transmission of measles, rubella (and congenital rubella syndrome [CRS]), poliomyelitis (polio) caused by wild poliovirus, and diphtheria in all age groups; elimination of tetanus in children aged < 15 years; and elimination of invasive disease due to Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in children aged < 5 years. This report summarizes progress toward reaching these goals during January-August 1994,

Susceptibility in USAF recruits to vaccine-preventable diseases.

Because of increasing incidence of mumps in a cohort of underimmunized young adults and the concern about the impact of this disease on the USAF recruit population, two studies were undertaken. These studies took a retrospective look at mumps in the active duty population, a cost analysis of immunizing all or only susceptible individuals, the actual antibody response in a group of 276 recruits in basic training, the demographic patterns of susceptibility and the types of previous immunization documentation. The conclusions were that the numbers of new mumps cases per year did not justify immun

Vaccine hesitancy and bone health: Musculoskeletal sequelae of vaccine-preventable diseases.

Vaccine hesitancy threatens global health by diminishing herd immunity and permitting the return of vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) including poliomyelitis, measles and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). These infections carry short-term and long-term musculoskeletal consequences, such as paralysis, limb deformities, septic or reactive arthritis, osteomyelitis and chronic pain, that place an ever increasing burden on orthopaedic services. This narrative review synthesizes clinical and epidemiological evidence linking sub-optimal immunization to orthopaedic morbidity caused by major VPDs.

[Epidemiological and clinical features of vaccine-preventable diseases in vaccine era].

In countries and regions with high vaccination coverage, several vaccine-preventable diseases have been resurged in recent years, such as measles, varicella, pertussis and mumps. Some studies have found that the clinical manifestation and epidemiological characteristics of these diseases were different from those in pre-vaccine era. This article reviewed the clinical and epidemiological features of vaccine-preventable diseases before and after wide immunization implementation, focusing on the situation in China, in order to attract the attention of clinicians, raise awareness, strengthen preve

Immunity gaps for several vaccine preventable diseases in Norway.

Childhood immunisation programs (CIP) have led to a substantial reduction in vaccine preventable diseases. However, simply monitoring a decline in disease incidence does not accurately reflect an individual's immunity to each disease. To identify the immune status in the Norwegian population, we measured the IgG levels against antigens of 7 vaccine preventable diseases (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (DTP), measles, mumps, rubella and Hemophilus influenzae type b infection) in 3051 residual sera representative of the Norwegian population aged 2-95 years in 2012. We found that 39.8% of women an

Ocular manifestations of vaccine-preventable diseases: A comprehensive review.

Vaccine-preventable diseases (VPDs) remain a significant contributor to global ocular morbidity, yet their ophthalmic manifestations are often underrecognized. This review synthesizes current evidence on viral and bacterial VPDs with ocular involvement, highlighting a spectrum of presentations-from conjunctivitis to keratitis, uveitis, and optic neuritis. Such infections may affect a range of ocular tissues through mechanisms including direct viral invasion, immune-mediated inflammation, and secondary complications. While the frequency and severity of ocular involvement vary among pathogens, t

Pediatric Resident Education and Preparedness Regarding Vaccine-Preventable Diseases.

This study assessed pediatric residents' reported knowledge of and self-confidence in identifying/treating 8 vaccine-preventable diseases. Pediatric residents nationwide (n = 385) reported (1) if they had previously diagnosed measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, varicella, and/or polio; (2) their comfort level in treating these diseases; (3) the likelihood of identifying symptoms; and (4) 16 disease-related statements as true/false. More than 25% of residents were not comfortable treating 5 of the 8 diseases. More than 25% reported themselves as unlikely/extremely unlikely

Seroprevalence for vaccine-preventable diseases among Italian healthcare workers.

Healthcare workers (HCWs) have an increased risk to be exposed to infectious diseases compared to the general population. For this reason, according to the National Immunization and Prevention Plan, all HCWs should have demonstrable evidence of immunity to measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and Hepatitis B. Earlier studies have already shown that a large percentage of Italian operators lacked immune protection for one or more of those pathogens. The aim of this study was to evaluate the immunization status for vaccine-preventable diseases of HCWs in a large Italian teaching hospital. We retrosp

The re-emergency and persistence of vaccine preventable diseases.

The introduction of vaccination worldwide dramatically reduced the incidence of pathogenic bacterial and viral diseases. Despite the highly successful vaccination strategies, the number of cases among vaccine preventable diseases has increased in the last decade and several of those diseases are still endemic in different countries. Here we discuss some epidemiological aspects and possible arguments that may explain why ancient diseases such as, measles, polio, pertussis, diphtheria and tuberculosis are still with us.

Global invasive bacterial vaccine-preventable diseases surveillance--2008-2014.

Meningitis and pneumonia are leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children globally infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus), Neisseria meningitidis, and Haemophilus influenzae causing a large proportion of disease. Vaccines are available to prevent many of the common types of these infections. S. pneumoniae was estimated to have caused 11% of deaths in children aged <5 years globally in the pre-pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) era. Since 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) has recommended inclusion of PCV in childhood immunization programs worldwide, especially

Vaccine-preventable diseases and vaccination rates in South Dakota.

Vaccine-preventable diseases have historically caused much illness and death in South Dakota. Sixty-seven diphtheria deaths were reported in 1892 and 1,017 polio cases were reported at the peak of the polio epidemic in 1952. As vaccines have been developed, licensed and put into wide use, the rates of diphtheria, polio, measles, smallpox and other diseases have successfully decreased leading to control, statewide elimination or eradication. Other diseases, such as pertussis, have been more difficult to control by vaccination alone. Although current vaccination coverage rates for South Dakota's

Pediatric sentinel surveillance of vaccine-preventable diseases in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Planning and evaluating vaccination programs depend on reliable systems of monitoring disease incidence in the community. In Italy vaccine-preventable diseases are subject to statutory notification, but they are often unreported. In January, 2000, a pediatric sentinel network was launched, with the aim of monitoring in a timely and accurate way the geographic and temporal trends of vaccine-preventable diseases. METHODS: The network consists of National Health System primary care pediatricians; participation is voluntary. The diseases under surveillance include measles, mumps, rube
