Cranberry for Urinary Tract Infection: From Bench to Bedside.

Urinary tract infections are common infectious diseases which can occur in any part of the urinary tract such as bladder, kidney, ureters, and urethra. They are commonly caused by bacteria that enter through the urethra. Urinary tract infections commonly develop in the bladder and spread to renal tissues. Up to now, there are different antimicrobial agents which have beneficial role on urinary tract infections. However, most of them cause different adverse effects and therefore, much attention has been paid to the search for effective therapeutic agents with negligible adverse effects. Cranber

Spatial Scale and Field Management Affect Patterns of Phosphorus Loss in Cranberry Floodwaters.

Although cranberries ( Ait.) are indigenous to the northeastern United States, phosphorus (P) fertilizer additions and periodic flooding make commercial cranberry a potential source of P to the region's lakes and streams. In this study, we report values of P export in cranberry floodwaters that range from <0.8 to 4.7 kg P ha, generally reflecting differences in the hydrological, edaphic, and management factors underlying soil P transfer to floodwater. The relatively high P loading rate (4.7 P kg P ha) was associated with harvest flooding of organic-rich soils. Periods of winter flooding and th

Pesticide Contamination in Native North American Crops, Part I-Development of a Baseline and Comparison of Honey Bee Exposure to Residues in Lowbush Blueberry and Cranberry.

A pesticide exposure baseline for honey bees was compiled for two New England cropping systems, the native North American plant species consisting of lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Aiton) and cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Aiton). More unique pesticide compounds were applied in blueberry than cranberry, but the numbers of pesticides discovered in trapped honey bee pollen were similar between the two crop systems. Not all pesticides found in pollen were the result of the applications reported by growers of either crop. When comparing residues, number of pesticides detected, total

Simulated gastrointestinal digestion of cranberry polyphenols under dynamic conditions. Impact on antiadhesive activity against uropathogenic bacteria.

This study is the first dynamic simulation of gastrointestinal digestion of cranberry polyphenols [1 g cranberry extract per day (206.2 mg polyphenols) for 18 days]. Samples from the simulated ascending, transverse, and descending colon of the dynamic gastrointestinal simulator simgi® were analyzed. Results showed that 67% of the total cranberry polyphenols were recovered after simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Specifically, benzoic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, phenylpropionic acids, phenylacetic acids, and simple phenols were identified. Cranberry feeding modified colonic microbiota comp

[Cranberries for prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections].

BACKGROUND: Cranberries have been used for prevention and treatment of urinary tract infections for decades. The berries contain proanthocyanidins that may reduce the susceptibility to infection by preventing bacteria from attaching to uroepithelial cells. Several clinical trials have been published during recent years. This article reviews documentation of cranberries on clinical effect, adverse events, drug interactions and use during pregnancy and lactation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Clinical effects of cranberries have been assessed based on the Cochrane review from January 2007 and literatur

Cranberry Pomace Valorization: Composition, Extraction, Bioactivity, and Food Applications.

Cranberry pomace, the principal solid residue generated during cranberry processing, is increasingly recognized as a compositionally valuable coproduct rather than a waste material. This is particularly relevant in North America, where cranberry production is concentrated in the United States and Canada, the two leading producing countries. This review critically evaluates its chemical composition, recovery of valuable constituents, biological properties, and food-related applications. Cranberry pomace retains substantial amounts of anthocyanins, flavonols, proanthocyanidins, and phenolic acid

Cranberry fruit epicuticular wax benefits and identification of a wax-associated molecular marker.

BACKGROUND: As the global climate changes, periods of abiotic stress throughout the North American cranberry growing regions will become more common. One consequence of high temperature extremes and drought conditions is sunscald. Scalding damages the developing berry and reduces yields through fruit tissue damage and/or secondary pathogen infection. Irrigation runs to cool the fruit is the primary approach to controlling sunscald. However, it is water intensive and can increase fungal-incited fruit rot. Epicuticular wax functions as a barrier to various environmental stresses in other fruit c

[Use of cranberry in chronic urinary tract infections].

OBJECTIVE: Chronic cystitis in women is frequent and difficult to treat. Up to now, an empirical prescription of antibiotics could decrease the frequency of acute episodes but with adverse effects and increasing risks of resistance. Studies have shown that cranberries should be used for that indication. We made a systematic review of literature to demonstrate how to use the cranberry. RESULTS: Randomized studies confirmed that the proanthocyanidin contained in cranberries can eliminate Escherichia coli adhesion to the urothelium. Clinical studies showed that the incidence of acute cystitis de

Increased salicylate concentrations in urine of human volunteers after consumption of cranberry juice.

The aim of this study was to assess whether regular consumption of cranberry juice results in elevations in urinary salicylate concentrations in persons not taking salicylate drugs. Two groups of healthy female subjects (11/group) matched for age, weight, and height consumed 250 mL of either cranberry juice or a placebo solution three times a day (i.e., 750 mL/day) for 2 weeks. At weekly intervals, salicylic acid and salicyluric acid (the major urinary metabolite of salicylic acid) concentrations were determined in urine by HPLC with electrochemical detection. Concentrations of salicylic acid

First Description of the Causal Agent of Fairy Ring of Cranberry and Its Novel Dispersal Method.

Fairy ring is an economically important disease of cranberry in the northeastern United States, yet its causal agent has remained unresolved for more than a century. Field sampling, targeted isolation, morphological and molecular characterization, pathogenicity tests, and population analyses consistently associated the disease with the genus Helicobasidium (Pucciniomycetes), a known teleomorph of the violet root rot fungus. Internal transcribed spacer and large subunit rDNA sequences placed all isolates from New Jersey and Massachusetts in a distinct lineage within H. longisporum, designated h

Characterizing genome-wide changes associated with inbreeding tolerance in cranberry: insights into homozygosity and heterozygosity.

The American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon) is an important native North American fruit. Cranberry is a self-fertile woody perennial. As part of an ongoing breeding and genetics program, inbred lines have been developed to help understand the effects of inbreeding in cranberries and to develop near-homozygous lines. Self-pollination can lead to a phenomenon known as inbreeding depression. As the effects propagate through generations, the loss of genetic diversity in offspring can cause reduced vigor, size of fruit and vegetative organs, and overall fitness. Our early observations suggested
