Not all vaping is the same: differential pulmonary effects of vaping cannabidiol versus nicotine.

RATIONALE: Vaping has become a popular method of inhaling various psychoactive substances. While evaluating respiratory effects of vaping have primarily focused on nicotine-containing products, cannabidiol (CBD)-vaping is increasingly becoming popular. It currently remains unknown whether the health effects of vaping nicotine and cannabinoids are similar. OBJECTIVES: This study compares side by side the pulmonary effects of acute inhalation of vaporised CBD versus nicotine. METHODS: In vivo inhalation study in mice and in vitro cytotoxicity experiments with human cells were performed to asse

Categorizing Vaping Intensity Among Youth.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing electronic cigarette use among youth has led to a need for a novel intensity measure of e-cigarette use and its association with nicotine addiction variables. AIMS AND METHODS: Using a cross-sectional study of the 2018-2019 PATH Wave 5 Youth survey, a new intensity metric of e-cigarette use, the average number of puffs per month as a function of frequency (days of use per month), number of uses per day and number of puffs per use, was developed for adolescent e-cigarette users. Using logistic regression, standard addiction measures were tested for association with hig

Vaping-associated illness: a reassessment.

BACKGROUND: In 2019, there was widespread presentation of respiratory distress as well as other organ system involvement in patients with a history of vaping. There continue to be reports of vaping-associated illness (VAI). This has come to be known as e-cigarette and vaping product associated lung injury (EVALI). The mechanism of injury remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: This study reexamines the clinical characteristics of patients affected by vaping and suggests that lung injury may not be the primary organ dysfunction but be part of a larger systemic illness. METHODS: This is a retrospective c

Pulmonary actinomycosis and marijuana vaping.

A 33-year-old man without significant medical history presented to the emergency department with a 6-month history of fatigue and 30 pounds of unintentional weight loss, with a recent cough and fever over the past week. He recalled two similar illnesses during college that did not require medical care. He denied tobacco use but reported inhaling marijuana 1-2 times daily over the past year with a vaping device. Physical exam was notable for a temperature of 100.0°F and an elevated blood pressure at 161/77 mm Hg. He was diaphoretic with clear breath sounds bilaterally. Chest imaging revealed di

Assessing Vaping Views, Usage, and Vaping-Related Education Among Medical Students: A Pilot Study.

Background E-cigarette use, or vaping, is known to be associated with potentially life-threatening lung injury, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reporting 2,807 hospitalizations and 68 deaths in the United States due to e-cigarette or vaping-associated lung injury. Vaping is also a risk factor for and is implicated in the spreading of COVID-19. Despite the consequences of vaping, the views and training of medical students regarding vaping is unclear. This study sought to investigate the knowledge and perception of vaping amongst future health care providers. Methods An anony

Prevalence of Vaping and Behavioral Associations of Vaping Among a Community of College Students in the United States.

We investigated the prevalence of vaping among college students in South-central Appalachia in the United States and explored factors which were associated with and could predict vaping among the college students. A sample of 498 enrolled students voluntarily completed a self-report REDCap health survey questionnaire in 2018. Outcome variable was use of electronic cigarettes categorized as yes/no. Independent variables included risky behaviors such as texting or emailing while driving, riding in a car with someone who had been drinking, history of protected and unprotected sexual intercourse,

Vaping Associated Pulmonary Nontuberculous Mycobacteria.

INTRODUCTION: E-cigarette or vaping product use associated lung injury (EVALI) has been an important health risk in both children and adults. The pathophysiology of EVALI is not well understood. However, it is speculated that certain substances such as Vitamin E Acetate (VEA), particularly in marijuana containing vape cartridges may result in lung injury and lead to respiratory dysfunction. EVALI is often seen in the absence of infections, but it has been found to be associated with both fungal and bacterial infections. Like EVALI, nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) pulmonary disease is also on

Vaping-related pulmonary granulomatous disease.

The use of electronic cigarettes, or "vaping," has garnered significant popularity and attention in recent years. Its pulmonary and systemic effects have yet to be fully studied and quantified, and recent reports of vaping-related illnesses and deaths have brought the clinical consequences of vaping into the public spotlight. This report describes the case of a 34 year old woman who presented to clinic with new-onset cough and dyspnea, shortly after beginning to use electronic cigarettes. Imaging demonstrated new micronodular opacities and mediastinal lymphadenopathy, while pathology confirmed

Vaping-induced diffuse alveolar hemorrhage.

There are growing reports of adverse health effects from e-cigarette use or vaping. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported 2409 cases and 52 deaths associated with e-cigarette use as of December 10, 2019. Vaping has been associated with acute eosinophilic pneumonia, organizing pneumonia, lipoid pneumonia, diffuse alveolar damage, acute respiratory distress syndrome, hypersensitivity pneumonia, and giant cell interstitial pneumonitis. Here we present a case of vaping-associated diffuse alveolar hemorrhage.

Association of vaping with respiratory symptoms in U.S. young adults: Nicotine, cannabis, and dual vaping.

INTRODUCTION: Although studies have found nicotine and cannabis vaping to be individually associated with respiratory symptoms, little is known about the harm of dual vaping. We aim to assess the association of nicotine-only, cannabis-only, and dual vaping with respiratory symptoms. METHODS: Using a national sample of 8033 U.S. young adults (ages 18-24) interviewed in 2021, we employed multivariable logistic regressions to assess the association between vaping behaviors and past 12-month respiratory outcomes. RESULTS: Of all participants, 75.4 % did not vape, 15.0 % vaped nicotine only, 4.7

Longitudinal impact of impulsivity and sensation-seeking on vaping initiation: The moderating role of peer vaping.

Limited research indicates impulsivity and sensation-seeking are associated with electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) use in young adulthood, however, no study has examined the moderating effect of peer ENDS use on these associations. We examined the impacts of impulsivity and sensation-seeking on ENDS use initiation and determined if peer ENDS use moderates these associations. Participants were 2,590 ENDS naïve (i.e., never used ENDS) young adults involved in multi-wave, 4.5-year longitudinal study (Fall, 2014 - Spring, 2019). At baseline, participants were 18-25 years old (M = 20.1; S

Impact of vaping on respiratory health.

Widespread uptake of vaping has signaled a sea change in the future of nicotine consumption. Vaping has grown in popularity over the past decade, in part propelled by innovations in vape pen design and nicotine flavoring. Teens and young adults have seen the biggest uptake in use of vape pens, which have superseded conventional cigarettes as the preferred modality of nicotine consumption. Relatively little is known, however, about the potential effects of chronic vaping on the respiratory system. Further, the role of vaping as a tool of smoking cessation and tobacco harm reduction remains cont

A Photovoice exploration of youth vaping.

INTRODUCTION: For over a decade, electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) have been the most used tobacco product among US youth. Although past research has stressed the importance of tailoring health communication messaging and interventions, much more work remains to be done in this area. To learn about youth views on vaping from their firsthand experience, we employed Photovoice to examine how youth experience vaping in their everyday lives. METHODS: Through Photovoice methodology and the SHOWED approach to discussion in 2022, we engaged US youth in conversation about vaping exposure and outco

Addiction to Tobacco Smoking and Vaping.

The tobacco epidemic has been one of the biggest public health threats, and smoking is one of the world's largest preventable causes of premature death. An estimated 15.4% of all deaths in the world are attributable to tobacco smoking. The present review aims to describe addiction to tobacco smoking and vaping. Tobacco and vaping devices contain nicotine, a highly addictive drug, which explains why smoking is so prevalent and persistent. Electronic cigarettes are a group of novel nicotine or tobacco products that have rapidly gained popularity in recent years. Electronic cigarette devices allo
