Imaging of the seminal vesicle and vas deferens.

The seminal vesicle (SV) and vas deferens (VD) are ancillary but essential urogenital organs. Understanding their embryologic features and anatomy can be helpful in evaluating various disorders of these organs. Recently, cross-sectional imaging modalities, including ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, have been increasingly used for evaluation of the SV and VD. The development of these organs is closely related to that of urinary organs, including the kidneys and ureters. Frequently, unilateral SV agenesis is associated with renal agenesis, and bilateral

Alleged resection of the vas deferens: medicolegal implications.

New York state law requires that significant complications be reported by telephone within 24 hours, followed by a full written report within five days with the names of the alleged involved physicians. This case illustrates the potential medicolegal consequences following the mandated immediate nonsubstantiated report of an alleged bilateral vas deferens injury during a bilateral inguinal herniorrhaphy in a 7-month-old male. Review of the surgical pathologic specimen showed that both hernial sacs did indeed contain segments of vas deferens structures, which based on the findings at reexplorat

Inhibitory histamine receptors in the rat vas deferens.

The effect of histamine on the field stimulated rat vas deferens preparation was studied and compared to mouse vas deferens. Histamine produced a concentration dependent inhibition of rat vas deferens (ID50 14 microM) similar to that seen with mouse vas deferens (ID50 2.4 microM). Unlike mouse however, where only H2 receptors are observed, the histamine inhibition of rat vas deferens was attenuated by both H1, (diphenhydramine) and H2 (cimetidine) antagonists. It is concluded that rat vas deferens contains both H1 and H2 receptor types.

Comorbidity of the congenital absence of the vas deferens.

Congenital absence of the vas deferens (CAVD) is a relatively rare anomaly that may contribute to male infertility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical features of patients with CAVD and to emphasise some pathological conditions that may be detected during the infertility work-up or follow-up of these patients. The charts of 150 males with the diagnosis of CAVD were evaluated retrospectively. The demographic characteristics, reasons for attendance, the way of diagnosis, interventions for infertility before and after attendance, physical examination findings, reproductive hormone

Agenesis or atrophy of the testis and vas deferens.

In this study the author examines the relationship between agenesis or atrophy of the testis and of the vas deferens. From a prospective study of 237 cases of unilateral and bilateral undescended testis, 12 cases of agenesis of a testis were seen; 9 of the 12 cases were associated with agenesis of the vas deferens and in 3 of these unilateral renal agenesis was also present, not necessarily ipsilaterally. Three other cases of testicular agenesis and four cases of extreme testicular atrophy were seen. In all seven, the vas deferens was present in part or in its entirety and roentgenography disc

Genetics of the congenital absence of the vas deferens.

Congenital absence of the vas deferens (CAVD) may have various clinical presentations depending on whether it is bilateral (CBAVD) or unilateral (CUAVD), complete or partial, and associated or not with other abnormalities of the male urogenital tract. CBAVD is usually discovered in adult men either during the systematic assessment of cystic fibrosis or other CFTR-related conditions, or during the exploration of isolated infertility with obstructive azoospermia. The prevalence of CAVDs in men is reported to be approximately 0.1%. However, this figure is probably underestimated, because unilater

Epididymal Appearance in Congenital Absence of Vas Deferens.

Scrotal sonography was performed in the infertile males. Sonography of epididymis was performed to document its presence, appearance, echo texture and duct ectasia. The spermatic cord was examined to document the status of the vas deferens. TRUS was performed to look for distal vas. Epididymal abnormalities were universal in men with congenital bilateral absence of vas deferens, with a sensitivity of 100%. Three types of abnormal appearances were recognized - a honeycomb appearance, a fine meshwork pattern of head, or complete or partial absence of epididymis. Identification of these abnormali

Congenital absence of vas deferens and ectopic kidney.

INTRODUCTION: Congenital absence of the vas deferens (CUAVD) is a rare clinical entity, usually discovered accidently during surgical procedures of the urogenital zone, CUAVD has the prevalence of 0.5-1.0% in male population and it is associated with various forms of congenital genitourinary malformations like renal agenesis. we present a case of a 21 years old, male, managed in our private hospital for varicoceles and discovered to have CUAVD and ectopic kidney. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 21 years old male, with no significant medical or surgical history presented to our out-patient clinic comp

Ureteral obstruction by the vas deferens after urostomy.

A male patient with spina bifida and paraplegia, born in 1968, underwent urostomy in 1973. In 1999, he developed urine infections. Intravenous urography showed bilateral hydronephrosis and hydroureter. This patient continued to get recurrent urine infections. In 2009, computed tomography of the abdomen revealed dilatation of the ureters, but the ureters reverted to normal calibre as they passed forward through the anterior abdominal wall. The vas deferens on either side was crossing and kinking the ureter. Magnetic resonance imaging of the abdomen confirmed that the level of obstruction in bot

Sympathetic efferent pathways projecting to the vas deferens.

The abdominal and pelvic sympathetic nervous system controlling the vas deferens has elaborate mechanisms to preserve its function against various injuries. The main sympathetic signals to the vas deferens proceed the common pathway in mammalians, which consists of the lumbar splanchnic nerve, caudal mesenteric plexus, hypogastric nerve, pelvic plexus and its branches. On the way of this common pathway, some signals cross to the other side of the body at the level of the caudal mesenteric plexus and/or the pelvic plexus. The preganglionic axons passing through the hypogastric nerve very likely

Absent vas deferens in association with renal abnormalities.

Absence of the vas deferens, especially if unilateral, should alert the clinician to an underlying renal anomaly, and further urological investigation is mandatory. If the vas is shown to be bilaterally absent in an infant, cystic fibrosis should be excluded. In the context of vasectomy, exploration of the palpably absent side should be unnecessary if intravenous urography detects a combined anomaly, although post-operative seminal analysis will still need to be performed.

Adult Presentation of Ectopic Vas Deferens with Dysplastic Kidney.

A 24-year-old male presented with voiding lower urinary tract symptoms. On evaluation, the patient was found to have midbulbar urethral stricture and right dysplastic pelvic kidney with right vesicoureteral reflux. A micturating cystourethrogram (MCUG) shows opacification of the right vas deferens along the entire course till the testis. The patient underwent end-to-end urethroplasty. But soon the patient presented with urinary tract infection (UTI) and epididymorchitis in the follow-up period. The patient was explored laparoscopically to remove dysplastic kidney and ectopic vas deferens. Lapa

The effects of paroxetine on rat isolated vas deferens.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate whether paroxetine (a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor) can modify the contractile responses of isolated vas deferens. Some contractile agents, potassium chloride (KCl), adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP), noradrenaline (NA), and electrical field stimulation (EFS) caused contractions both in epididymal and prostatic portions of vas deferens. Paroxetine (PX) in concentrations 10(-7) and 10(-6)M potentiated the contractions to KCl and ATP only in epididymal portion but in higher concentrations (10(-5) and 10(-4)M) inhibited the responses in both po

Constitutive expression of cyclooxygenase-2 in rat vas deferens.

Prostaglandins, lipoid substances discovered in human semen as modulators of uterine muscle contractility, are known to play significant roles in virtually all mammalian organ systems, but their male reproductive functions are unclear. Cyclooxygenase, the rate-limiting enzyme in prostaglandin synthesis, occurs in two isoforms distinguished on the basis of constitutive (COX-1) or inducible (COX-2) expression patterns in mammalian tissues. However, in the adult rat male reproductive system, immunohistochemistry and Western and Northern analysis showed that COX-2 is the predominant isoform and is

A short vas deferens limiting successful laparoscopic testicular descent.

OBJECTIVE: To highlight the problem of the short vas deferens in a single stage or staged laparoscopic orchidopexy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From October 1992 to February 1996, 23 patients (mean age 4.9 years, range 12 months to 12 years) underwent a laparoscopic staged Fowler-Stephens orchidopexy. During the second stage (open surgery), a short vas deferens was found in three patients; two testes were located retrovesically and one was in the internal inguinal ring. Two testes could not be brought into the scrotum, but only to the inguinal region, and one testis was placed in the scrotum but un
