OBJECTIVE: Vasa vasorum (VV) have been implicated to play a role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. This study was designed to describe the distribution of VV density in different vascular beds in humans and to investigate the association between VV density and the known distribution of atherosclerosis in human arteries.
METHODS: Forty-two human arteries, harvested at autopsy or after explantation, were analyzed by three-dimensional microscopic-computed tomography (micro-CT). VV density, endothelial-surface-fraction (Sigma VV endothelial-surface-area/vessel-wall-volume) and vascular-area

A 59-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with acute onset of chest pain. She had experienced high fever, weight loss, polyarthralgia, myalgia, polyneuropathy and hallucinations for 3 years before admission. The diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa with hepatitis B surface antigenemia was made by muscle biopsy and serological examinations, and administration of prednisolone induced remission of all the manifestations. After developing the acute attack of severe chest pain, she died suddenly. At autopsy, a DeBakey type 1 aortic dissection was found and the immediate cause of death was found

We present 3 cases of unilateral internal carotid artery (ICA) occlusions with prominent single collateralizing vessel of vasa vasorum on computed tomographic angiography. The features on axial source and 3-dimensional images of computed tomographic angiography include "pseudostring sign," serpigenous course of the vasa vasorum, eccentric dot appearance in the wall of chronically thrombosed ICA, and termination in the neck or reconstituting into the ICA at or below the skull base.

BACKGROUND: A well-documented association exists between the vasa vasorum and vasopathologies, including atherosclerosis. However, information on the role of the vasa vasorum during vascular degenerative changes of vasospasm after subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is insufficient.
METHODS: In this study, 34 rabbits were divided into 3 groups: basal group (N = 8), sham group (N = 8), and SAH group (N = 18). Experimental SAH was formed using a double-injection model. During follow-up, the neurologic status of the rabbits was observed. All rabbits were euthanized after 2 weeks, and the vasopathologi

The mechanisms of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) formation and rupture are controversial in the literature. While the intraluminal thrombus (ILT) plays a crucial role in reducing oxygen flux to the tissue and therefore decreasing the aortic wall strength, other physiological parameters such as the vasa vasorum (VV) oxygen flow and its consumption contribute to altered oxygenation responses of the arterial tissue as well. The goal of this research is to analyse the importance of the aforementioned parameters on oxygen delivery to the aneurysmal wall in a patient-specific AAA. Numerical simulat

INTRODUCTION: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) affects a quarter of the world's population and encompasses a spectrum of liver conditions, from non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) to inflammation and fibrosis. In addition, NAFLD also links to extrahepatic conditions like diabetes or obesity. However, it remains unclear if NAFLD independently correlates with the onset and progression of atherosclerosis.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study aimed to explore the relationship between NAFLD severity, assessed via liver biopsy, and early atherosclerosis using adventitial vasa v

Human ascending aortic aneurysms characteristically exhibit cystic medial degeneration of the aortic wall encompassing elastin degeneration, proteoglycan accumulation and smooth muscle cell loss. Most studies have focused on the aortic media and there is a limited understanding of the importance of the adventitial layer in the setting of human aneurysmal disease. We recently demonstrated that the adventitial ECM contains key angiogenic factors that are downregulated in aneurysmal aortic specimens. In this study, we investigated the adventitial microvascular network (vasa vasorum) of aneurysmal

AIM: The aim of this study was to analyse the immunopathological mechanisms of vasculo-Behçet disease, which were also compared to cases of Takayasu's arteritis and inflammatory aneurysm to evaluate differences in inflammatory mechanisms.
METHOD AND RESULTS: We reviewed six cases of vasculo-Behçet disease, four of Takayasu's arteritis and seven inflammatory aneurysms which underwent surgical repair. Immunohistochemical studies were performed on paraffin-embedded tissue using a labelled streptavidin-biotin method, as was in-situ hybridization for Epstein-Barr virus. Microscopically, neutrophil

The vasa vasorum (VV) have gathered considerable interest over the last decade due to its role in vascular wall biology and pathology; however, while the coronary VV are relatively well studied, the anatomy of peripheral VV, such as those of the aorta, remains poorly described, hampering knowledge of their role in peripheral vascular diseases. Through careful retrieval of the porcine thoracic aorta and successful microthrombi removal, the thoracic aorta was perfused with BriteVu™ followed by micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) scanning to image the VV and obtain a 3D reconstruction. We used c

PURPOSE: Abnormal proliferation of adventitial vasa vasorum (vv) occurs early at sites of atherosclerosis and is thought to be an early biomarker of vascular damage. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) can detect this process. Its usefulness in irradiated arteries as a measure of accelerated atherosclerosis is unknown. This study investigates contrast intensity in carotid adventitia as an early marker of radiation-induced damage in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients.
MATERIALS/METHODS: Patients with HNC treated with a wedged-pair and matched neck technique or hemi-neck radiotherapy (RT) (uni

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Partially thrombosed vertebral artery aneurysms (PTVAs) are rare, most of which are not easy to treat. Furthermore, endovascular treatment of PTVAs may not have favorable outcomes. The relationship between PTVAs and well-developed vasa vasorum (VV), including the mechanism of aneurysm growth, has been reported, but there are no reports of imaging findings by digital subtraction angiography (DSA). In this case, we successfully performed superselective angiography of well-developed VV and evaluated its imaging characteristics. We present the first DSA report of a well-

INTRODUCTION: Vasa vasorum (VV) neovasculogenic potential is now widely accepted, and possibly related to the presence of progenitor cells. We studied the morphology of VV in healthy arteries and their immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of Nestin and WT1, two markers of endothelial progenitor cells.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty arteries from 16 multiorgan donors were analyzed; IHC was performed manually (CD34, CD31, Nestin) or automatically (WT1). Microvessel positivity "density" for each antibody was calculated dividing vascular adventitia in 1-mm2 fields with an ocular micrometer. Double

Antegrade recanalisation of a completely occluded internal carotid artery (ICA) via the vasa vasorum is extremely rare. Here, we report such a case after proximal endovascular coiling in a case of dissected (i.e. non-atherosclerotic) ICA. A 42-year-old man presented with thromboembolic stroke of the left frontal lobe owing to pseudo-occlusion of the left ICA manifesting as motor aphasia and right hemiparesis. There were abundant floating thrombi in the petrous portion of the left ICA. Because of good collateral flow in the left middle cerebral artery territory through the anterior communicatin

A 47-year-old woman presented with two transient ischemic attacks due to occlusion of the left internal carotid artery. The affected artery was revascularized by vasa vasorum. Angiography showed occlusion of the left common carotid artery including the origin of the internal carotid artery. The distal internal carotid artery was revascularized by vasa vasorum at the level of the second cervical vertebral body. Left subclavian artery-internal carotid artery bypass surgery using a saphenous vein graft was performed successfully, during which the narrowed but patent lumen of the internal carotid

Background/Objectives: Type II endoleaks (T2ELs) remain one of the most frequent causes of aneurysm sac enlargement following endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair (EVAR). While embolization may be effective in typical T2ELs with a clearly identifiable feeding vessel, management becomes more challenging when no visible communication with a side branch can be demonstrated. Emerging evidence suggests that hypertrophic vasa vasorum may contribute to aneurysm sac expansion in these atypical cases. We present a case of refractory atypical T2EL treated by open conversion and discuss the pote

BACKGROUND: Giant aneurysms arising from the vertebral artery (VA) are often associated with thrombosis and present as mass lesions with slow progression of symptoms and signs. A consensus is still to be established on the underlying growth mechanisms and surgical management of thrombosed giant aneurysms of the VA.
CASE DESCRIPTION: Here, we report the case of a 54-year-old man who sought neurosurgical care after 3 months of progressive cervical axial pain. He underwent cervical magnetic resonance imaging and cerebral angiography, which revealed a giant VA aneurysm with thrombosed component.

Patients with COVID-19 demonstrate higher rates of cardiovascular complications, including thromboses and thromboembolism. One may suppose that the action of SARS-CoV-2 transforms stable atherosclerotic plaques into unstable status. Cardiovascular complications in COVID-19 may be caused by progressive viral alteration of the blood vessels, including Vasa vasorum. A lethal case of ischemic brain disease caused by cerebral atherosclerosis and exacerbated by a stroke during COVID-19 infection is briefly described. The results of the autopsy showed perivascular lymphocytic infiltration and signs o

In the microcirculation, pericytes are believed to function as mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs). We hypothesized that the vasa vasorum harbor progenitor cells within the adventitia of human aorta. Pericytes, endothelial progenitor cells, and other cell subpopulations were detected among freshly isolated adventitial cells using flow cytometry. Purified cultured pericytes were enriched for the MSC markers CD105 and CD73 and depleted of the endothelial markers von Willebrand factor and CD31. Cultured pericytes were capable of smooth muscle lineage progression including inducible expression of smo
