A CMOS VEGF Sensor for Cancer Diagnosis Using a Peptide Aptamer-Based Functionalized Microneedle.

This paper presents the first CMOS Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF) sensor for cancer diagnosis directly from human blood. The sensor incorporates a peptide aptamer-based microneedle that allows the detection of electrochemical reactions with VEGF. This results in a capacitance change between the microneedles and then reads out by a two-step capacitance-to-digital converter (CDC). The proposed two-step CDC consists of a coarse 5b slope ADC and a fine 14b continuous-time delta-sigma modulator (CTDSM). During slow peptide-binding, the slope ADC performs a coarse conversion and the resul

Obesity, venous capacitance, and venous compliance in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

AIMS: Circulating blood volume is functionally divided between the unstressed volume, which fills the vascular space, and stressed blood volume (SBV), which generates vascular wall tension and intravascular pressure. With decreases in venous capacitance, blood functionally shifts to the SBV, increasing central venous pressure and pulmonary venous pressures. Obesity is associated with both elevated venous pressure and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). To explore the mechanisms underlying this association, we evaluated relationships between blood volume distribution, venous

Baseline biophysical parameters in subjects with sensitive skin.

Sensitive skin has been described as a skin type showing higher reactivity than normal skin and developing exaggerated reactions when exposed to external factors. The stinging test, performed by applying lactic acid to the nasolabial fold and evaluating the intensity of subjective symptoms, is widely accepted as a marker of sensitivity and employed for the selection of subjects experiencing invisible cutaneous irritation. However, this test is based on self-perceived assessment and lacks objectivity. In order to contribute to the finding of objective descriptors, we assessed baseline biophysic

Renal hemodynamics and volume homeostasis in pregnancy.

Maternal hemodynamic adaptation to pregnancy consists of profound changes in various interdependent systems. Of crucial importance in the early adaptation of the volume homeostatic mechanisms to pregnancy is the resetting of the volume and osmoreceptors. This resetting may be induced by a reduction in vascular tone and leads to early changes in plasma osmolality and glomerular filtration rate. After this initial adaptation other volume-regulating mechanisms such as the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, pregnancy hormones, and alpha-ANP adapt to the rising blood volume. The initial adaptati

Circulatory responses to stimulation of the carotid body chemoreceptors in the cat.

Cardiovascular responses to carotid body chemoreceptor stimulation were followed in the 'curairzed', vagotomized, artificially ventilated cat. Stimulation of the chemoreceptors by perfusion of the carotid sinus regions with venous blood induced a reflex vasconstriction in skeletal muscle, kidney, intestine and skin, and, in most cases, an increased heart rate. A comparison of the chemoreceptor reflex responses with those obtained by direct electrical stimulation of the regional vasomotor fibres indicated that in chemorecptor reflexes the vasomotor fibre activity increased to the same extent in

[Rethinking congestion in patients with heart failure].

Lower-limb oedema and weight gain remain key components in the assessment of congestion in heart failure and continue to guide clinical decision-making. However, they only imperfectly reflect a complex pathological process involving interactions between the vascular and interstitial compartments, venous capacitance, and lymphatic drainage. Congestion extends beyond simple tissue fluid accumulation or weight gain and includes changes in vascular pressures and volumes that may be dissociated from one another and difficult to detect clinically. This dissociation may lead to diagnostic bias and ov

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging-derived pulmonary artery distensibility index correlates with pulmonary artery stiffness and predicts functional capacity in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Increased stiffness of the pulmonary vascular bed is known to increase mortality in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH); and pulmonary artery (PA) stiffness is also thought to be associated with exercise capacity. The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMRI)-derived PA distensibility index correlates with PA stiffness estimated on right heart catheterization (RHC) and predicts functional capacity (FC) in patients with PAH. METHODS AND RESULTS: Thirty-five consecutive PAH patients (23% male, mean age, 44 ± 13

Mechanism of decongestant activity of alpha 2-adrenoceptor agonists.

The vascular bed in nasal mucosa of different species, including human, is highly vascularized and an extensive sinusoidal network of large capacitance vessels is present deep within the submucosa. When this network of venous sinusoids is engorged with blood, the swollen mucosa reduces the size of the airway lumen and congestion ensues. Nasal vasculature tone is strongly influenced by the sympathetic nervous system and the only drugs approved specifically to relieve vascular nasal obstruction are alpha-adrenoceptor sympathomimetic agents. Due to their vasoconstrictor action, the sympathomimeti

RuBPY decreases intracellular calcium by decreasing influx and increasing storage.

cis-[Ru(bpy)2(py)NO2](PF6) (RuBPY) is a ruthenium complex nitric oxide (NO) donor that presents a nitrite in its moiety and has been shown to induce vasodilation in various arteries, as well as arterial pressure reduction with no changes in heart rate. Because vascular tone is highly dependent on the cytosolic calcium concentration ([Ca2+ ]c), the current study aimed to investigate the effects of RuBPY on the intracellular mobilization of calcium stores of rat aortic vascular smooth muscle cells. Vascular reactivity experiments were performed in isolated aortic rings that were contracted with

Augmentation of venous return by adrenergic agonists during spinal anesthesia.

To test the effectiveness of adrenergic agonists in correcting the vascular sequelae of spinal anesthesia, we used venous reservoir volume (RV) and mean arterial pressure (MAP) as indices of the changes in venous capacitance and arterial resistance produced by adrenergic agonists in dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital and undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). A CPB-based technique was chosen both to prevent drug and reflex effects on the heart from influencing the results and to provide a convenient means by which to monitor venous capacitance. Total spinal anesthesia significantly decreas

[Changes in the intraorganic blood vessels of the stomach and duodenum in peptic ulcer].

It was established that the ulceration zones showed hyperemia which increases the volume density of venous vessels, disturbs the permeability of their walls, causes trophic disorders with subsequent phlebosclerosis, limitation of capacitance, appearance of venous hypertension and further changes of the vessel wall structures and neighbouring tissues. Compensatory reaction of the arterial intraorganic bed (vascular spasm) deteriorates trophic disorders. Simultaneous increase of the volume density of arterial vessels in the "intact" zone favours reparative and compensatory capacities of the latt

Intra-aortic Balloon Pump for Acute-on-Chronic Heart Failure Complicated by Cardiogenic Shock.

The intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) is widely implanted as temporary mechanical circulatory support for cardiogenic shock (CS). However, its use is declining following the results of the IABP-SHOCK II trial, which failed to show a clinical benefit of the IABP in acute coronary syndrome (ACS)-related CS. Acute-on-chronic heart failure has become an increasingly recognized, distinct cause of CS (HF-CS). The pathophysiology of HF-CS differs from that of ACS-CS because it typically represents the progression from a state of congestion (with relatively preserved cardiac output) to a low-output sta

Changes of BKCA current and vascular reactivity in vascular smooth muscle of thoracic aorta and mesenteric artery in type 2 diabetic rats.

The relationship between large conductance calcium activated potassium channel (BKCa) and vascular lesions in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was investigated by observing vascular reactivity of thoracic aorta and mesenteric artery and the current changes of BKCa in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). The thoracic aorta and mesenteric artery of T2DM rats were isolated, the whole cell perforated patch clamp experiment and single channel patch clamp experiment of acute enzyme separation of thoracic aorta and mesenteric artery smooth muscle cells were performed to measure the membrane capacitan

Parasympathetic control of blood circulation and secretion in the nasal mucosa.

The effects of selective parasympathetic nerve activation on the secretory response and the vascular exchange and capacitance sections in the cat nasal mucosa were studied. The vascular events were investigated by measuring the local disappearnce of 125I- and changes in gross pulse rate from 131I- labelled serum albumin as monitored over the nose. A frequency-dependent increase in nasal secretion and local blood content occurred in the range 0.5-12 imp/sec: an increase in disappearance rate was observed at the same time. This indicates that the vascular and secretory responses are activated si

Hemodynamic mechanisms of neurogenic pulmonary edema.

Acute lung injury has been reported in man and animals with intracranial disorders, head trauma or cerebral compression. Early studies in our laboratory demonstrated that pulmonary hemorrhagic edema (PHE) of acute and fulminating type occurred accompanying severe hypertension and bradycardia (Cushing responses) in animals following cerebral compression (CC) or intracranial hypertension (ICH). The lung pathology was prevented by spinal transection and sympathoadrenergic blocking agents, but was not affected by decerebration, adrenalectomy, vagotomy and atropine. The effects of central sympathet

Fortuitous rupture of aortic aneurysm: a catastrophic event affording time for surgical cure.

The rupture of an aortic aneurysm is generally a fatal event, but occasionally the rupture will occur into an adjacent vascular structure, thereby preventing exsanguination and affording temporary survival. Three cases are presented illustrating the fortuitous nature of the rupture of an aortic aneurysm into a vascular structure. The first patient had an atherosclerotic abdominal aortic aneurysm that ruptured into the inferior vena cava and was successfully repaired. The second case demonstrates the formation of a fistula from the aorta to the left pulmonary artery in a patient with a syphilit

The relationship between vascular expansion of the aorta and pulmonary artery and the genesis of the impedance cardiogram using the technique of sonomicrometry.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: This prospective animal study aims to evaluate the contribution of the pulmonary artery (PA) and aorta on the morphology of the impedance cardiogram using sonomicrometry. METHODS: Impedance electrodes were placed around the thorax, aorta and in the oesophagus of five dogs. Sonomicrometry crystals were mounted on the PA and aorta for tracking vascular distension while a Doppler flow probe measured aortic blood flow. RESULTS: No significant differences (p > 0.05) were recorded between the onset of aortic expansion, aortic blood flow and the start of the impedance dZ/dt signa

Repeated episodes of respiratory distress in an obese parturient after cesarean delivery.

A 25-yr-old obese parturient with mild asthma underwent an uneventful spinal anesthetic for primary cesarean delivery. Within 4 h after delivery, the patient twice developed acute shortness of breath, inspiratory stridor, and hypoxemia that required intubation. A battery of blood tests revealed no evidence of an allergic reaction. She had a normal echocardiogram and chest computed tomography, but her neck computed tomography showed an enlarged left thyroid lobe asymmetrically compressing the endotracheal tube cuff. We hypothesized that, after delivery, decreased maternal vascular capacitance i

Orthostatic hypotension and the role of changes in venous capacitance.

We suggest a mechanism by which blood volume changes might explain the hypotension that, after space flight, often accompanies the return to normal gravity. Upon entering microgravity, peripheral veins may collapse and, because of volume redistribution, raise the pressure in the central venous compartment. After some time in space, homeostatic mechanisms may cause volume excretion and reduce the pressure in the central venous compartment to normal values. Upon return to normal gravity, peripheral veins may re-expand and distribute a reduced blood volume into an enlarged space, thus lowering pr
