BACKGROUND: Vascular depression (VaD) is a subtype of late-life depression (LLD) associated with cerebrovascular disease, cognitive impairment, and poor response to standard antidepressants. Despite its clinical relevance and association with increased risk of dementia, no specific treatment guidelines currently exist.
OBJECTIVES: To systematically review randomised controlled trials (RCTs) on the clinical efficacy of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for VaD in older adults.
METHODS: A systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science and ClinicalTrials.gov registry i

INTRODUCTION: Hemodialysis is the most common treatment used for end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) patients and an arteriovenous fistula (AV) fistula is the preferred vascular access. The goal of our study was to investigate potential associations between vascular access type and depression.
METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of 180 patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis. The Beck Depression Inventory was used to assess degree of depression. Demographic factors, treatment details, and laboratory values were obtained from the hospital medical record.
FINDINGS: Fifty-two percent (n

Vascular depression in the elderly. Does inflammation play a role?Depression is the most common comorbidity in the elderly, and it is a major determinant of disability. The late-onset depression in highly associated to cardiovascular disease. Depressive symptoms may follow vascular brain damage, especially when mood regulating areas are affected. However depression is strongly associated to vascular disease even when there is no manifest brain damage. Recently great attention has been given to chronic inflammation, both related to depression and vascular disease. Both experimental and clinical

BACKGROUND: Depression after coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is common and associated with worse outcomes. The Neuropsychiatric Outcomes After Heart Surgery (NOAHS) study evaluates the vascular depression hypothesis, which implicates cerebrovascular disease as a contributor to late-life depression, as applied to a CABG surgery cohort.
METHODS: We evaluate whether right or left middle cerebral artery (MCA) stenosis or its severity is associated with a greater risk of post-CABG depression. NOAHS was a prospective study of non-demented patients 40 years of age or older having CABG su

Depression is common in older individuals and is associated with high disability and increased mortality, yet the factors predicting late-life depression (LLD) are poorly understood. The relationship between of depressive disorder, age- and disease-related processes have generated pathogenic hypotheses and provided new treatment options. LLD syndrome is often related to a variety of vascular mechanisms, in particular hypertension, cerebral small vessel disease, white matter lesions, subcortical vascular impairment, and other processes (e.g., inflammation, neuroimmune regulatory dysmechanisms,

An ambulant patient with a regular series of mood changes constantly varying between retarded depression and hypomania on a 32- to 36-day cycle was studied for 39 weeks. The patient completed a daily self-assessment of the 11-point Dorland mood scale each evening. This scale encompasses a range of moods varying from depression through euthymia to mania. Weekly recordings each lasting 65 min were made of resting heart rate, 14 parameters derived from electrical impedance plethysmography of the head together with arterial blood pressures before and after each recording. Results were correlated w

Introduction: Late-life depression is a well-known risk factor for future dementia. Increasing evidences also show a link between cerebral hypoperfusion and neurodegeneration, although data on Transcranial Doppler ultrasonography (TCD)-derived measures in patients with "Vascular Depression" (VD) are lacking. The aim of this study was to assess and correlate TCD parameters with cognitive function and severity of subcortical ischemic vascular disease in a sample of VD patients. Methods: Seventy six patients (mean age 72.5 ± 5.3 years; 53.9% females) met the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for unipolar

Depression is associated with an increased likelihood of cardiac events and stroke. We hypothesized that the vascular risk factor burden might itself predispose to both cardiovascular events and depression. Therefore, we examined whether aggregate scores of vascular risk factor burden were associated with the new-onset of depression in the community. We studied 2023 depression- and dementia-free Framingham Heart Study (Framingham, USA) Offspring participants who attended both examination cycles 7 (1998-2001) and 8 (2005-2008). The American Heart Association Ideal Cardiovascular Health metric a

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disorder associated with vascular inflammation, measured by 18-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18-FDG PET/CT), and an increased risk of myocardial infarction. Patients with psoriasis are also more likely to suffer from comorbid depression. Whether depression accelerates the development of subclinical atherosclerosis in psoriasis is unknown.
METHODS: Patients were selected from within a larger psoriasis cohort. Those who reported a history of depression (N = 36) on survey were matched by age and gende

OBJECTIVE: Depression in patients undergoing coronary artery graft bypass (CABG) surgery is associated with morbidity and mortality, making its early identification and clinical management crucial. Vasculopathy and older age, hallmarks of patients requiring CABG, are also features of vascular depression. In this study, we assess for features of vascular depression in patients undergoing CABG surgery.
METHODS: This is a cross-sectional analysis of a single-site prospective observational cohort study of patients undergoing CABG surgery. Subjects were assessed preoperatively using the Depression

OBJECTIVE: Studies have identified longitudinally that there exists an association between depression, cerebral blood flow (CBF), and white matter hyperintensities that are thought to be due to vascular pathologies in the brain. However, the changes in CBF, a measure that reflects cerebrovascular integrity, following pharmacotherapy are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the dynamic CBF changes over the course of antidepressant treatment and the association of these changes with depressive symptoms.
METHODS: We used pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling to investigate CBF c

BACKGROUND: Vascular diseases are associated with significant sequelae and clinical repercussions for the lives of affected patients, which are more serious among the elderly. The consequences of vascular disease, such as limb loss, chronic pain, prolonged hospitalization, and polypharmacy, reduce these patients' autonomy and independence, influencing their wellbeing and quality of life.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of depression and assess functional capacity in patients with vascular diseases admitted to a Vascular Surgery Service.
METHODS: This is a descriptive, cross-sectional

OBJECTIVE: Potentially incongruent research literatures suggest three divergent hypotheses about depressive symptomatology: (1) symptoms are recurrent; (2) later-life depression results from high cerebrovascular burden (CVB); and (3) depressive symptoms contribute to comorbidities causing vascular burden. Past vascular depression research assumes that later-life depressive symptoms relate uniquely to high CVB and not to prior, recurrent depression. This study examines these divergent hypotheses.
METHODS: Data include 5175 participants across 18 years from the Wisconsin Longitudinal Study (mea

Vascular depression (VaDep), which was proposed over two decades ago, is a distinct subtype of depression primarily observed in patients with stroke and cerebral small-vessel disease and is characterized by white matter hyperintensities; however, the lack of standardized diagnostic criteria and consensus limits its clinical application. This review explores the pathological conditions and vascular risk factors that may precipitate VaDep, particularly in relation to stroke and cerebral small-vessel disease. VaDep is distinguished by unique pathophysiological mechanisms and treatment responses.

Both animal and human studies have implicated the neurotrophic and angiogenic mediator vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in depression, with meta-analyses, indicating that protein levels are raised in patients with depression. In line with this, we have previously shown that VEGFA mRNA levels are higher in whole blood from patients with depression compared to controls, in particular in patients with psychotic unipolar depression, and that treatment with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) alters VEGFA mRNA levels. The aim of the present study was, therefore, to extend this previous work by

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to evaluate baseline plasma VEGF levels as a potential predictor of response to antidepressant pharmacotherapy. The study also sought to determine whether baseline plasma VEGF would be useful in predicting treatment outcome when two pharmacodynamically diverse agents with established antidepressant efficacy, escitalopram and quetiapine, were administered monotherapeutically to MDD patients.
METHODS: Two groups of qualifying MDD subjects were enrolled. One group was treated with escitalopram and the other with quetiapine. Plasma concentrations of VEGF were

INTRODUCTION: Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) seems to be gaining importance as a prognostic factor for stroke risk. CVR reflects the compensatory dilatory capacity of cerebral arterioles to a dilatory stimulus; this mechanism plays an important role in maintaining a constant cerebral blood flow. Evaluating factors that influence CVR will help prevention or early detection of cerebrovascular disease (CVD). In this study we aimed to measure the CVR in vascular-risk free depressed individuals so as to evaluate the effect depression has on CVR and hence its role as a stroke risk factor.

BACKGROUND: Organic brain disease such as dementia or stroke is associated with depression. In dementia, depressive symptoms are common where there is evidence of vascular disease and in Alzheimer's disease they often coexist with extrapyramidal signs.
METHOD: In a study of 60 patients with Alzheimer's disease and 39 patients with vascular dementia, depressive symptoms were rated using the Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia. Neurological signs were assessed and severity of cognitive impairment was measured with the Mini-Mental State Examination.
RESULTS: Depressive symptoms were more s
