Iatrogenic Arteriovenous Femoral Fistula Masquerading as Congenital Vascular Malformation.

Arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is direct communication between artery and vein. We report a case femoral AVF, which due to its chronicity had involved whole of the lower limb and was masquerading as congenital arteriovenous malformation. This was managed successfully by surgical intervention, resulting in the resolution of symptoms and restoration of normal limb function.

Endoscopic Repair of Tracheoesophageal Fistula with Vascular Embolization Plug.

Aerodigestive fistulas represent a major challenge in clinical practice. This problem is burdened with severe morbidity and mortality, despite recent advantages in endoscopic endoluminal repair techniques. Special problems are fistulas localized higher, engaging the proximal esophagus and trachea, which in adults most often result from post-intubation injury. Surgery is generally demanding and reserved for the patients in whom other, less invasive options fail. Hereby, we present a case of post-intubation tracheoesophageal fistula, successfully treated with endoscopic vascular plug placement.

An unconventional hemodialysis vascular access through graft-vein fistula.

An abnormal fistulation occurring between a prosthetic dialysis graft and an adjacent native vein is a rare complication. However, in our patient, this abnormality ended up preserving the patency of his hemodialysis vascular access. We present a case of an unconventional hemodialysis vascular access making use of the graft-vein fistula.

Vascular Anomalies Associated with Esophageal Atresia and Tracheoesophageal Fistula.

OBJECTIVE: To report the incidence of congenital vascular anomalies in a cohort of patients with esophageal atresia (EA) and tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) while describing the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and consequences, and to evaluate the diagnostic value of esophagram in diagnosing an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA). METHODS: All patients born with EA/TEF between 2005 and 2013 were studied. Preoperative echocardiography reports, surgical descriptions of primary esophageal repair, and esophagrams were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Of the 76 children born with EA/TEF i

The brachiocephalic fistula: a successful secondary vascular access procedure.

In the period from January 1988 to July 1989, 185 arteriovenous conduits for hemodialysis were created in 150 patients with end stage renal disease including 20 procedures (13 patients) performed as emergency external shunts. Of the remaining patients 125/137 (139 procedures) could be followed. The procedures included 85 end-to-side radiocephalic wrist fistulas, 42 end-to-side brachiocephalic elbow fistulas and 12 brachioaxillary grafts. Complications associated with brachiocephalic fistulas were not significantly higher than with radiocephalic fistulas, except for the development of arterial

Rectal fistula induced artificial vascular graft infection: A case report.

RATIONALE: Artificial vascular graft infection (AVGI) is a rare but severe complication in vascular surgery, often associated with high morbidity and mortality. This case report highlights a unique instance of AVGI caused by a rectal fistula, emphasizing the diagnostic challenges and management strategies in such a rare scenario. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 60-year-old female presented with low-grade fever and purulent discharge from an abdominal incision 1 year after antibiotic therapy had failed to resolve the infection. She had a history of aortofemoral dacron graft bypass 6 years prior, complicat

Transposed Brachial-Basilic Arteriovenous Fistula for Vascular Access in Japan.

As more than 320,000 patients are currently receiving hemodialysis treatment in Japan, the creation and maintenance of hemodialysis access is a major concern. The national guidelines recommend autogenous arteriovenous hemodialysis, and the brachial-basilic arteriovenous fistula has been the focus of attention, because the need for secondary, tertiary, or even more vascular access is growing. Although favorable results have been reported in terms of patency and access-related complication, this fistula involves various unsolved or controversial issues, with limitations including complex procedu

[The spinal dural arteriovenous fistula is an underdiagnosed vascular malformation].

The spinal dural arteriovenous fistula is the most common spinal vascular malformation, and it is severely underdiagnosed. The symptoms can mimic those of spinal stenosis. Today, the diagnosis is made by an advantageous combination of MR time-resolved imaging of contrast kinetics and digital subtraction angiography posing low risk to the patient. Treatment is primarily direct microsurgical obliteration. Early treatment is essential, since outcome is dependent on preoperative clinical status.

Peripheral arteriovenous fistula as vascular access for long-term chemotherapy.

INTRODUCTION: To provide long-term vascular access in clinical oncology peripheral forearm veins (up to 95% of patients in Ukraine), central venous access and "complete implanted vascular systems" are used most often. Many oncology patients have contraindications to catheterization of superior vena cava. Besides, exploitation of central veins is associated with potential technical and infectious complications. The aim - to study short-term and long-term results of arteriovenous fistula exploitation as vascular access for continuous anticancer therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Peripheral venous

Fatal aortoesophageal fistula in two cases of tight vascular ring.

Vascular rings are rare vascular congenital anomalies causing oesophageal and tracheal compression. An aortoesophageal fistula is a devastating, in part iatrogenic, complication of vascular rings. It is seen with increasing frequency, and can be misleading, since differential diagnosis with other causes of haematemesis and melaena is often difficult, especially in infants. We report two infants with aortoesophageal fistulas secondary to double aortic arches forming a vascular ring. In both, the diagnosis was missed, and massive haemorrhage led to death. In both cases, the fissuration on the oe

Vascular Smooth Muscle Cell Metabolic Reprogramming in Arteriovenous Fistula Failure.

Hemodialysis is the most commonly used renal replacement therapy worldwide, and arteriovenous fistulas (AVFs) are the preferred vascular access. The functional patency of AVFs directly determines the dialysis efficiency and quality of life of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). However, in clinical practice, the failure of AVFs seriously affects the treatment prognosis of these patients. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs), as the main component of the vascular media, not only maintain the integrity and tension of the vascular wall under physiological conditions but also play a cruc

Successful Rescue of Massive Hemoptysis Caused by Vascular-Bronchial Fistula.

The case reported in this paper is a vascular-bronchial fistula associated with fatal massive hemoptysis. The patient was rescued successfully by experts from a multidisciplinary team. The bronchoscopy physician cleared the accumulated blood in the airway timely and maintained the airway patency, and the anesthesiologist established artificial ventilation quickly; eventually, the thoracic surgeon performed an emergency thoracotomy to control the bleeding. It reflected the significance of multidisciplinary collaborative treatment.

Intraoperative vascular mapping improves patient eligibility for arteriovenous fistula creation.

BACKGROUND: We assessed the utility of intraoperative vein mapping performed by the operating surgeon for evaluating vessel suitability for arteriovenous fistula (AVF) creation. METHODS: In a retrospective review of 222 AVFs, vein diameter measurements were compared between intraoperative and preoperative mapping in the same anatomical location. AVF creation was based on intraoperative vein diameter ≥2 mm, using a distal to proximal and superficial veins first approach. Potential selection of access type based on preoperative findings alone was analyzed. RESULTS: The mean diameter of the vei

Foreign Bodies Simulating a Congenital Palatal Fistula and Vascular Anomaly.

Foreign bodies embedded in the palate are uncommon findings and may occasionally mimic oral lesions. In the majority of the cases, foreign body embedment in the palate happens in infants and children who are unable to give history. Physical examination in the oral cavity of this group of patients in order to arrive at a definitive diagnosis is limited. We present two female infants with foreign bodies adherent to the hard palate. The first was ten months old and the second was 11 months old. In both cases the materials removed from the palate were plastic in nature (black or red in color and c

[The diagnosis of lymphatic vascular dysplasia and lymphatic fistula formation].

The importance of lymphangiography for diagnosing the formation of lymphatic fistulas and vascular dysplasias of the lymphatic vessels is on the increase within the scope of therapeutic invasiveness. Its importance and ranking in diagnosing lymphatic circular disorders is demonstrated and exemplified by case reports on three patients suffering from chylothorax of various origin, on one patient with chyluria, and one patient with lymphoedema in the soft parts of the neck. In two chylothorax patients, lymphangiography resulted in successful surgery. It is the decisive method in diagnosis and the

[Closure of bronchial fistulas using amplatzer vascular plugs].

Bronchial fistulas occurring either spontaneously in the course of malignant diseases of the chest or following pulmonary resections (lobectomy, pneumonectomy) are rare, but feared complications associated with high morbidity and mortality. In many cases a surgical approach to fistula closure is not possible. Numerous endoscopic procedures for fistula closure have been reported, mostly in the form of isolated case reports with until now no satisfying results. No guidelines or consensus have been established as yet. Since 2006 several cases of successful fistula closure by using Amplatzer Septa
