Clinical infectious diseases : an official publication of the Infectious Diseases Society of America1992eng
Anaerobic gram-negative cocci of the genus Veillonella are generally normal flora of the oropharynx and upper respiratory tract. When isolated in clinical specimens, these bacteria are usually regarded as commensal organisms rather than as pathogens. We report a case of spinal osteomyelitis in which Veillonella parvula was isolated in pure culture from bone as well as blood. Osteomyelitis of the spine due to anaerobic bacteria may occur more frequently than has been recognized, and anaerobic cultures of biopsy specimens should be routinely performed.

Veillonella species, known as the early colonizer of oral biofilm, are prevalent in oral microbiota. Seven Veillonella species have been isolated from oral cavity. Their distribution varies not only with different people but also with different sites in the oral cavity. Oral Veillonella are associated with oral diseases. They contribute to the adhesion of Streptococcus mutans and consume the lactate generated by streptococci. Veillonella species play an important role in the occurrence and development of periodontal diseases by providing adhesion sites for Porphyromonas gingivalis and boosting

We report a case of pyelonephritis and secondary bacteraemia caused by Veillonella species during pregnancy. Veillonella is part of the normal flora from the oral cavity, gut and vagina. However, because Veillonella is usually isolated from cultures of clinical specimens as part of commensal flora, it is frequently regarded as a contaminant. In the present case, Veillonella was isolated from the patient's urine and blood samples that showed evidence of pyelonephritis and secondary bacteraemia. We found that ureteral stenting is an extremely effective therapeutic option for pregnant woman with

UNLABELLED: Veillonella spp is part of the normal flora of the mouth, bowels and vagina, but in most of the studies the immunomodulatory properties of intestinal microbiota was described. Despite of numerous studies on immunomodulatory activity of the microbiome's, most of them are focused on the intestinal microbiome. On the contrary, last finding of lung cancer patients shows higher level of Capnocytophaga and Veillonella, which may serve as potential biomarkers. Unfortunately, in local tumor microenvironment the competition for access to oxygen and nutrients within the microbiological conte

Veillonella parvula is an anaerobic gram-negative coccus that is part of the normal flora of the animal and human mouth and gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts. Oral V. parvula is involved in the development of early periodontal disease as well as different types of serious infections. Present data on molecular mechanisms responsible for innate immune response against Veillonella are very scanty. The aim of this study was to investigate the Toll-like receptor (TLR) pathways responsible for V. parvula lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and to identify the intracellular pathways induced by this reco

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The composition of the human gut microbiota is linked to health and disease, and knowledge of the impact of therapeutics on the microbiota is essential to decipher their biological roles and to gain new mechanistic insights. Here we report the effect of aldafermin, an analog of the gut hormone FGF19, versus placebo on the gut microbiota in a prospective, phase 2 study in patients with NASH.
APPROACH AND RESULTS: A total of 176 patients with biopsy-confirmed nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) (nonalcoholic fatty liver disease activity score ≥ 4), fibrosis (F1-F3 by NASH C

We report the first case of bacteremia caused by Veillonella atypica in a morbid elderly female patient who developed obstructive pyelonephritis. She was treated with ceftriaxone and ureteral stenting; this is the first report of V. atypica infection in humans. Species identification was performed by multiplex PCR and sequencing of rpoB. The strain was susceptible to metronidazole and clindamycin but resistant to benzylpenicillin, ampicillin, ampicillin/sulbactam, and moxifloxacin.

INTRODUCTION: Gallstone disease (GSD) is a common hepatobiliary disorder influenced by bile composition, biliary drainage, and gallbladder motility. Emerging evidence suggests that oral microbiota may contribute to GSD development, but its role remains unclear. This study explores salivary microbiome alterations in GSD patients and their potential clinical relevance.
METHODS: This study enrolled 58 GSD patients and 10 age-matched healthy controls. Salivary microbiome profiles were characterized using high-resolution 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. All participants underwent comprehensive clinic

OBJECTIVES: To investigate high-level piperacillin resistance in Veillonella spp. in the absence of beta-lactamase activity.
METHODS: Penicillin-binding protein (PBP) competition studies were conducted in Veillonella strains, with piperacillin MICs ranging from 0.5 to >128 mg/L and ampicillin MICs from 0.125 to 4 mg/L. Whole cell lysates were pre-incubated with piperacillin or ampicillin and post-labelled with [3H]benzylpenicillin.
RESULTS: PBP competition studies showed that the PBP with greatest affinity for penicillin and ampicillin had a molecular weight of approximately 66 kDa, and exhi

Veillonella parvula is a non-motile gram-negative coccus that forms part of the normal microbiota in several body sites and which has been rarely isolated as cause of infections in human population, particularly in bacteremias. Here we give the overview of characteristics of genus Veillonella and the summary of its role in infections, particularly in bacteremia. We additionally report two patients with bacteremia due to V. parvula. Two sets of blood cultures of each patient yielded a pure culture of an anaerobic microorganism identified as V. parvula by MALDI-TOF MS, and confirmed by 16S rRNA

We describe the case of a one-year-old boy who presented at the emergency department with a sudden onset of fulminant edema of the right eyelid. He had been suffering from a varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection for 5 days. A secondary bacterial infection of varicella skin lesions was suspected. Computed tomography of the orbit revealed pronounced superficial soft tissue inflammation of the right periorbit, without intraorbital extension. There was a spontaneous rupture of the right upper eyelid and a culture of the released fluid grew the anaerobic organism Veillonella parvula. The patient w

Eikenella corrodens and Veillonella parvula are normal cultivable inhabitants of the oral cavity but their presence in endodontic infections has not been as common as it could be anticipated. This might have been because of shortcomings of culture techniques when it comes to bacterial isolation or identification. The present study intended to survey samples from primary endodontic infections for the presence of E. corrodens and V. parvula using a culture-independent 16S rRNA gene-based nested PCR protocol. Genomic DNA was isolated directly from samples taken from different forms of periradicul

WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVES: Veillonella parvula is usually regarded as a contaminant bacteria associated with polymicrobial infection. Here we report a rare case of sepsis caused by V. parvula, which was successfully treated by chloramphenicol. In addition, the therapeutic strategy for V. parvula infection was reviewed.
CASE SUMMARY: A 55-year-old woman underwent surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis and developed high fever (39.5°C) after surgery, accompanied by chills and fatigue. V. parvula was isolated in blood culture and shown to be probably sensitive to both meropenem and chloramphenico

Veillonella spp. are Gram-negative opportunistic pathogens present in the respiratory, digestive, and reproductive tracts of mammals. An abnormal increase in Veillonella relative abundance in the body is closely associated with periodontitis, inflammatory bowel disease, urinary tract infections, and many other diseases. We designed a pair of primers and a probe based on the 16S rRNA gene sequences of Veillonella and conducted real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) and droplet digital PCR (ddPCR) to quantify the abundance of Veillonella in fecal samples. These two methods were tested for specificity

Veillonella parvula strain 259 (= DSM 2007) was able to grow on a mineral salts medium supplemented with (per litre) 1 g yeast extract, 1 g Tween-80, and 3 mg putrescine.2 HCl, with 6 mM thioglycolate as reductant and lactate as growth substrate. Succinate did not serve as a growth substrate, but when added in conjunction with lactate, it was decarboxylated to propionate and resulted in a measurable increase in growth yield, corresponding to the formation of 2.4 g cell dry mass per mol succinate. A growth yield increase linked to succinate metabolism occurred only while lactate was also being

BACKGROUND: Dysbiosis during childhood impacts the configuration and maturation of the microbiota. The immaturity of the infant microbiota is linked with the development of inflammatory, allergic, and dysmetabolic diseases.
AIMS: To identify taxonomic changes associated with age and GDM and classify the maturity of the intestinal microbiota of children of mothers with GDM and children without GDM (n-GDM).
METHODS: Next-generation sequencing was used to analyze the V3-V4 region of 16S rRNA gene. QIIME2 and Picrust2 were used to determine the difference in the relative abundance of bacterial g

Root caries is a subtype of dental caries that predominantly impacts older adults. The occurrence and progression of root caries are associated with the homeostasis of dental plaque biofilm, and microbial synergistic and antagonistic interactions in the biofilm play a significant role in maintaining the oral microecological balance. The objective of the current study was to investigate the role of Veillonella parvula in the microbial interactions and the pathogenesis of root caries. The analysis of clinical samples from patients with/without root caries revealed that Veillonella and V. parvula
