Neisseria gonorrhoea e and Chlamydia trachomatis are pathogens commonly isolated in pelvic inflammatory disease. Neisseria gonorrhoea e may uncommonly spread outside the urogenital tract to cause complications. We present 2 cases of adolescents with ventriculoperitoneal shunt infection due to N. gonorrhoea e, requiring shunt externalization.

The presentation of an acute abdomen in children with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt requires skillful diagnostic workup. Apart from complications caused by the shunt, primary abdominal pathological conditions must be taken into consideration, particularly in the older child. A series of 6 children with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt had to be treated surgically for appendicitis. Their medical records were analyzed retrospectively. Despite difficulties with the initial diagnosis, the time from admission to final diagnosis and operation was relatively short. An accurate history, careful evaluation

A case is reported of an adult male in whom the distal ventriculoperitoneal shunt tip migrated through the right inguinal canal into the scrotum. It perforated the scrotal skin, leading to an infection of the still draining shunt. Migration of ventriculoperitoneal shunts into the scrotum occurs occasionally in children but until now has not been reported in an adult with perforation of the scrotum.

Reported are the cases of three hydrocephalic patients who developed a clinically heterogenous entity with an allergic rejection of their silicone ventriculoperitoneal shunts. All of the patients had an original presentation indicative of a shunt infection, but laboratory analysis revealed sterile cerebrospinal fluid in all three cases. The typical course included recurrent skin breakdowns over the shunt tract, subsequent infections and development of fungating granulomas. Treatment, with successful resolution of the symptoms, included changing the shunt material from silicone to polyurethane,

Ventriculoperitoneal shunts are currently a standard therapy for obstructive hydrocephalus. These shunts are associated with a variety of abdominal complications, one of which is the development of ascites. We report an 11-year-old girl with a ventriculoperitoneal shunt in whom a low-grade peritoneal infection presented with ascites. This case demonstrates the importance of diagnostic paracenteses, appropriate antibiotic therapy and the potential need to establish an alternative route for cerebrospinal fluid diversion in patients with ventriculoperitoneal shunts and ascites.

Ventriculoperitoneal diversion of cerebrospinal fluid in infants and children with hydrocephalus has become the procedure of choice over the last 15 years. It has replaced ventriculoatrial shunts, resulting in a marked decrease in the complication rate after such procedures. Four cases of migration of the shunt tip through patent processus vaginalis resulting in scrotal hydrocele are presented.

Hydroceles were noted in six patients who had ventriculoperitoneal shunts at less than 1 year of age. These took a few days to several months to develop. The incidence was 7% in girls and 23% in boys less than 1 year of age. Hydrocephalus was especially severe in the older patients in the group. In one case, the hydroceles cleared spontaneously when a peritoneal catheter was removed. A patent processus vaginalis may allow development of a hydrocele in the face of increased intra-abdominal fluid and pressure. The catheter position may be important, and it is possible that CSF alters the absorbi

A 27-year-old female was admitted to our department due to gait disturbance and disorientation. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed symmetrical ventricular dilatation. She was pregnant at 25 weeks of gestation. At the age of 16 years, she had received a ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt for hydrocephalus, induced by a cerebellar medulloblastoma. Neurological examination at the current admission showed that she was disoriented with ataxic gait and convergence nystagmus. Analysis of the cerebrospinal fluid showed normal cell composition. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) and Thalium-single photo

We describe extrusion of a ventriculoperitoneal shunt catheter through the anus occurring in an eight month child with hydrocephalus. This is a rare complication of ventriculoperitoneal shunt. Perforation of the bowel by the peritoneal catheter of the shunt occurred without peritonitis or retrograde infection of the shunt system. Pathogenesis and the literature is reviewed.

In standard techniques for performing ventriculoperitoneal shunts, the peritoneal catheter is threaded more or less blindly into the peritoneal cavity. Using laparoscopic techniques allows accurate peritoneal placement, without a large incision, even in replacement procedures and in patients with previous abdominal operations. We performed 28 laparoscopically guided ventriculoperitoneal shunt placements and shunt revisions in 24 patients with hydrocephalus (aged 6-80 years). Sixteen of 24 patients (67%) had previous abdominal surgery. Laparoscopic shunt placement was successful in all patients

BACKGROUND: Parkinsonism after ventriculoperitoneal shunt in patients with hydrocephalus is a rare and profound complication that is often misdiagnosed, causing treatment to be delayed. To date, the characteristics of this disease have not been well described and summarized. Here, we report a rare case of parkinsonism after ventriculoperitoneal shunt; symptoms were aggravated by antipsychotic drugs but showed a good response to Madopar. Such cases have rarely been reported previously.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 44-year-old man presented with parkinsonism, bilateral pyramidal tract signs, and oculom

A 43-year-old woman presented to our hospital with headache accompanied with nausea and intermittent vomiting without abdominal pain. The patient had undergone ventriculoperitoneal shunt placement for hydrocephalus owing to quadrigeminal cistern arachnoid cyst. Cranial computed tomography demonstrated enlarged bilateral ventricles, and the abdominal radiograph demonstrated a reverse U-shaped catheter that seemed to have been fractured in the left peritoneal cavity.

Although the use of newly developed procedures such as endoscopic third ventriculostomy or coagulation of the choroid plexus has gradually expanded, ventriculoperitoneal(VP)shunts are still not obsolete. They are the most commonly performed surgery for treating pediatric hydrocephalus. Young neurosurgeons may frequently encounter this CSF diversion procedure in clinical practice. However, the VP shunt remains a failure-prone procedure, as exemplified by obstruction, infection, mechanical shunt failure, over drainage, and distal catheter site-specific failures. Therefore, surgery requires exqui

Incisional hernia represents a rare complication after ventriculoperitoneal shunt positioning due to failure of the fascial suture in the site of abdominal entrance of ventriculoperitoneal catheter. Clinical presentation can be extremely variable, according to patient's performance status, herniated material constitution (i.e. mesenteric fat, bowel loops or both) and complication occurrence (e.g. strangulation or intestinal obstruction). Early diagnosis is fundamental in order to surgically repair the defect and prevent further complications. We present the case of a paucisymptomatic incisiona

Listeria species may cause life-threatening events including meningitis and invasive infection in newborns, pregnant women, older and immunodeficient people. The most common Listeria species that causes infection is L. monocytogenes. It is known that Listeria innocua has no pathogenicity. A 9-month-old baby had ventriculoperitoneal shunt and was treated with adrenocorticotropic hormone because of infantile spasms. He was brought to hospital with fever and vomiting. Upon physical examination, the patient seemed uncomfortable and had a temperature of 38.6°C. Laboratory results were as follows: h
