Antioxidant and hepatoprotective activity of Veronica ciliata Fisch. extracts against carbon tetrachloride-induced liver injury in mice.

Veronica ciliata Fisch. has been traditionally used in Traditional Chinese Medicine prescriptions due to its curative effects for hepatitis, cholecystitis, rheumatism, and urticaria. The present study was focused on investigating the role of ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts of Veronica ciliata Fisch. Furthermore, in vitro antioxidant activity (scavenging of DPPH, ABTS, superoxide, and nitrite radicals; reducing power; β-carotene bleaching) and the hepatoprotective effect of the ethyl acetate extract by means of CCl4-induced oxidative stress in mice were investigated. The ethyl acetate extrac

Cumulative and Legacy Effects of Irrigation on Growth, Physiology, and Gene Expression in Veronica longifolia Under Field Conditions.

Climate change is expected to increase the frequency of fluctuating moisture regimes on the Korean Peninsula, yet plant responses to moderate field moisture variation remain poorly understood. We investigated the effects of irrigation on growth, physiology, and gene expression of the native perennial plant Veronica longifolia under field conditions. Plants were exposed to irrigated and nonirrigated treatments for 20 weeks in 2024, followed by a subsequent growing season in 2025 without irrigation to assess cumulative and carryover effects. During the 2024 treatment period, seasonal mean soil w

Veronica persica Ethanol Extract Ameliorates Dinitrochlorobenzene-Induced Atopic Dermatitis-like Skin Inflammation in Mice, Likely by Inducing Nrf2/HO-1 Signaling.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is chronic allergic contact dermatitis with immune dysregulation. Veronica persica has pharmacological activity that prevents asthmatic inflammation by ameliorating inflammatory cell activation. However, the potential effects of the ethanol extract of V. persica (EEVP) on AD remain elusive. This study evaluated the activity and underlying molecular pathway of EEVP in two AD models: dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB)-induced mice and interferon (IFN)-γ/tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-stimulated human HaCaT keratinocytes. EEVP attenuated the DNCB-induced increase in serum immunoglo

Toward understanding the influence of soil metals and sulfate content on plant thiols.

Plants respond to increased concentrations of metals by a number of mechanisms, including chelation with phytochelatins (PCs). Soil specimens and plants (Veronica anagalis-aquatica, Typha domingensis, Cynodon dactylon, Chenopodium album, Rumex dentatus, Amaranthus gracilis, Chenopodium murale, Inula viscosa) leaves were collected from two sites in northern Jordan and subsequently metals (cadmium, copper, and lead), sulfate, and PC (from leaves) levels were determined. One of these sites was contaminated with metals and the other served as a control site. The contaminated site had elevated cadm

A comparison of 19th century and current attitudes to female sexuality.

The 19th century medical attitude to normal female sexuality was cruel, with gynecologists and psychiatrists leading the way in designing operations for the cure of the serious contemporary disorders of masturbation and nymphomania. The gynecologist Isaac Baker Brown (1811-1873) and the distinguished endocrinologist Charles Brown-Séquard (1817-1894) advocated clitoridectomy to prevent the progression to masturbatory melancholia, paralysis, blindness and even death. Even after the public disgrace of Baker Brown in 1866-7, the operation remained respectable and widely used in other parts of Euro

Design and synthesis of novel PPO-inhibiting pyrimidinedione derivatives safed towards cotton.

Developing innovative and effective herbicides is of utmost importance since weed management has become a worldwide agricultural production concern, resulting in severe economic losses every year. In this study, a series of new pyrimidinedione compounds were developed via combination of pyrimidinediones with N-phenylacetamide moiety. The herbicidal activity test (37.5-150 g of ai/ha) indicated that most of the new derivatives exhibited excellent herbicidal activity against dicotyledonous weeds, but less against grasses. Among them, compound 34 was identified as the best postemergence herbicida

First report of a novel Paenibacillus strain JDF1 and its biocontrol potential against citrus bacterial canker.

Citrus bacterial canker (CBC), caused by Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc), causes severe annual yield losses on citrus crops worldwide. Current control strategies including quarantine, copper-based chemicals, and resistant varieties are limited by poor adaptability, pathogen resistance, and long breeding cycles. Herein, a novel endophytic Paenibacillus strain, designated JDF1, was isolated from Veronica persica (a common weed in citrus orchards). In vitro assays demonstrated that JDF1 inhibited Xcc. Greenhouse trials with "Eureka" lemon showed that low-concentration JDF1 (OD600 = 0.2) and
