Electromyographic evaluation of the 'vertical' dimension: the Learreta TMJ decompression test.

The clinical observation of the incisors overbite is the most common form used to evaluate the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD); however, this technique offers poor information about the compression state of the TMJ. In order to obtain such information, it is necessary to evaluate the electrical activity of the elevator muscles using surface electromyography (EMG). In case of a compressive irritation of the joint receptors, the trigeminal nucleus returns an inhibitory motor response of the elevator muscles that can be measured. The Learreta's EMG decompression test is done by measuring the EM

Evaluation of craniometric methods for determination of vertical dimension of occlusion.

In clinical practice, fully precise method for exact determination of vertical relation of occlusion still does not exist. This study examines the relationship between different craniofacial distances and the distance subnasale-gnathion (Sn-Gn), which represents the lower third of the face in vertical relation determination. The highest coefficient of correlation was (r = 0.8678, p < 0.05) between the distance eye-ear (E-E = lateral border of the ocular orbit-medial opening of the meatus of the external auditory canal) and Sn-Gn. The prediction of the distance Sn-Gn could be determined through

Reliability of a face scanner in measuring the vertical dimension of occlusion.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the reliability of a face scanner in measuring the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO). METHODS: Fully dentate volunteers (n = 20; mean-age = 30.0 ± 10.7 years) were recruited. Clinical facial measurements were obtained using a digital caliper and a face scanner (Obiscanner, Fifthingenium, Italy). The scans were imported into a mesh-processing software, and the distances were measured digitally. Measurements were obtained for each participant with the jaws positioned in maximal intercuspation (MI) and with increased vertical distances of 2, 4, and 6 mm. Verti

Increase of vertical dimension--consequences for the maxillomandibular relationship. A clinical approach.

The purpose of the present study was to compare the vertical change in the incisor and molar areas caused by insertion of a bite opening appliance and to analyse the occurrence of rotation and eruption during the following treatment period (mean 4.3 months). Eight patients between 15 and 24 years of age with vertical overlaps > or = 4 mm were treated by means of a maxillary fixed lingual arch appliance with an anterior bite plane. The retruded mandibular position was recorded with cold cure acrylic before treatment, immediately after insertion of the fixed appliance, and after removal of it. V

The Law of Minimum Vertical Dimension: Evidence for Improvement of Dental Occlusion.

The law of minimum vertical dimension (MVD) states that "when the mandible moves to reach the maximum intercuspal position, this always involves bringing the mandible and maxilla as close together as possible." Therefore, after the first occlusal contact is made, the MIP will be reached through reduction of the vertical dimension. Our objective of this study, through an integrative review of the literature review, was to determine whether ignoring this law is a factor that contributes to malocclusion, temporomandibular joint dysfunction, and recurrences of functional orthodontic and orthopedic

Association between degenerative temporomandibular joint disorders, vertical facial growth, and airway dimension.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to determine whether preexisting degenerative temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are associated with hyperdivergent facial phenotype and decreased airway dimensions. METHODS: Cone-beam computed tomography scans of adult female and male individuals, 16 years of age and older, distributed in a case group defined as those with degenerative temporomandibular joint disorder (dTMJD; n = 31) or controls with normal TMJ findings (n = 242) were included. Odds ratios were calculated based on facial type and gender. Analysis of variance was used to compare the

Does altering the occlusal vertical dimension produce temporomandibular disorders? A literature review.

The purpose of this review was to present a comprehensive review of the scientific evidence available in the literature regarding the effect of altering the occlusal vertical dimens-ion (OVD) on producing temporomandibular disorders. The authors conducted a PubMed search with the following search terms 'temporoman-dibular disorders', 'occlusal vertical dimension', 'stomatognatic system', 'masticatory muscles' and 'skeletal muscle'. Bibliographies of all retrieved articles were consulted for additional publications. Hand-searched publications from 1938 were included. The literature review revea

Adjustment of the occlusal vertical dimension in the bite-raised guinea pig.

In humans, the inappropriate occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) causes several orofacial disorders, such as bruxism and pain in the masticatory muscles and temporomandibular joint. However, it is still unclear how strictly the OVD is adjusted. To answer this question, we studied the temporal change of the OVD in bite-raised young guinea pigs. The OVD was raised by fixation of a bite-raising appliance to the lower incisors, and increased by either 3 or 1.5 mm at the first molars. After the space produced between the upper and lower molars was filled within 10 days due to eruption of the molars,

[Vertical dimension in the OSAHS in adults: an example of functional alteration].

Obstructive sleep apnea and hypoapnea syndrome (OSAHS) is important to orthodontists for several reasons. The authors, after defining OSAHS and describing it briefly, review the literature dealing with the cranio-facial morphology of apnea patients. They report the results of their cephalometric study, which is based on an architectural analysis of 274 patients. Their facial characteristics, especially vertical dimension, are consistent with those displayed by mouth breathing children. Changes in respiratory functioning modify the mechanical behavior and the structures of the upper airways. Os

Vertical Dimension of Occlusion: A comparative study between Anthropometric and Knebelman's craniometric methods.

The masticatory system changes as time passes. The vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) undergoes alterations due to temporomandibular joint disorders which in turn may be caused by related muscle modifications or pathological tooth wear. There are many methods to measure VDO. Among these, the anthropometric method and Knebelman's craniometric method have been shown to be the most closely related to facial biotype. The aim of this study was to compare data recorded with those two methods. A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed with a total 200 patients. A vernier caliper was used t

Rehabilitation of Occlusal Vertical Dimension in a Patient with Acromegaly: A Clinical Report.

Acromegaly is a rare acquired disorder caused by excessive growth hormone production. Dentists play an important role in the diagnosis of this disorder because of intraoral and extraoral symptoms such as extreme growth of the mandible, enlargement of the maxilla, diastema between teeth, a tendency toward malocclusion, a wide and thick nose, a marked malar bone, and thick lips. The prosthetic treatment of these patients is challenging because growth in the condyles and rami can lead to the development of a severe class III jaw relationship. This case report describes the prosthetic treatment of
