[Standardized vestibular rehabilitation should be emphasized after surgical treatment involving vestibular system].

Surgical treatment involving vestibular system includes intractable vertigo surgery, inner ear surgery and vestibular tumor surgery. These operations often lead to the weakening or even loss of vestibular function, or further aggravation of the original dysfunction. If there is no standardized treatment after operation, patients are prone to recurrent vertigo, or long-term blurred vision and/or imbalance, as well as other symptoms. Through the use of medicines to promote vestibular compensation and standardized non-invasive vestibular rehabilitation training, symptoms can be eliminated as soon

Peripheral Vestibular System Disease in Vestibular Schwannomas: A Human Temporal Bone Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dizziness is a common symptom in patients with vestibulo-cochlear schwannoma (VS), and several recent studies have identified this symptom as the single most important concerning the quality of life. Clinical and histological observations regarding hearing loss have suggested that this may be caused by both cochlear and retrocochlear mechanisms. Multiple mechanisms may also be at play in the case of dizziness, which may broaden perspectives of therapeutic approach. This study presents a systematic and detailed assessment of vestibular histopathology in temporal bones from patient

The parietal lobe and the vestibular system.

The vestibular cortex differs in various ways from other sensory cortices. It consists of a network of several distinct and separate temporoparietal areas. Its core region, the parietoinsular vestibular cortex (PIVC), is located in the posterior insula and retroinsular region and includes the parietal operculum. The entire network is multisensory (in particular, vestibular, visual, and somatosensory). The peripheral and central vestibular systems are bilaterally organized; there are various pontomesencephalic brainstem crossings and at least two transcallosal connections of both hemispheres, b

Migraine and the vestibular system in adults.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the relationships between migraine and the vestibular system in adults. A review of the literature on migraine reveals that paroxysmal vertigo is not uncommonly associated with migraine in various temporal relationships with headache and/or other neurologic symptoms. Vertigo (or nonvertiginous dizziness) may be the chief presenting complaint sometimes masking less dramatic symptoms causing patients to be directed to an otolaryngologist. Meticulous family, past personal, and present history are necessary to produce the information leading to suspicion of

[Effect of hyperventilation on the vestibular system].

Nineteen normal subjects with no past history of hearing or balance impairment have undergone an electronystagmogram (E.N.G.), according to the usual technique in our laboratory. About one month or more after this first test, they underwent a second E.N.G. but this time with periods of hyperventilation distributed at certain precise moments of the test. Our analyses have not demonstrated that hyperventilation causes nystagmus or enhances in preexisting nystagmus in normal subjects, although the changes in the positional test were close to being significant.

The vestibular system: Unsteadiness, dizziness, and vertigo.

This chapter provides a detailed overview of the vestibular system's anatomy, physiology, and clinical relevance, emphasizing how inner-ear sensory structures and brainstem pathways interact to maintain balance, gaze stability, and spatial orientation. It begins with the peripheral vestibular apparatus, describing the semicircular canals and otolith organs in detecting angular and linear accelerations. These signals are transmitted via the vestibulocochlear nerve to the vestibular nuclei at the pontomedullary junction, where they integrate with visual and somatosensory inputs to drive coordina

Vestibular system in alcohol and drug addicts.

The study was carried out on 223 alcoholics, 96 drug addicts and 50 healthy persons as a control group. Clinical otolaryngological examination, ENG examination, and audiometry diagnosis were made. The results showed lesions of the central part of the vestibular system in alcohol and drug addicts which are much more evident on ENG examination than in clinical otolaryngological findings. We have observed that trauma capitis does not cause increased vestibular disturbances in addicted persons. Audiologic findings indicate significant hearing loss in both groups.

[The vestibular system: from structure to function].

The two vestibular receptors, right and left, hidden in the petrous part of the temporal bone with the cochlear receptors, receive information from angular and linear movements of the head and transform them into a nerve message sent to the nuclei of the brainstem, which are connected directly on the one hand to the oculomotor nuclei, at the origin of the oculovestibular reflex (induction of nystagmus), and on the other hand, to the spinal motor neurons, at the origin of the vestibulospinal reflex. These reflexes are associated with responses to visual and somaesthetic information for maintena

Effect of noise on the vestibular system - Vestibular evoked potential studies in rats.

Studies have shown that in order for sound to affect the vestibular end organs in the inner ear, very high intensities are required. Furthermore, in patients with noise induced hearing loss, vestibular signs, if present, are subclinical. In order to study possible auditory-vestibular interactions in a more controlled fashion, using physiological sound intensities, the present study used short latency vestibular evoked potentials (VsEPs) to impulses of angular (15,000 degrees /sec(2), risetime 1.5 msec) and linear (3-5 g, risetime 1.5 msec) acceleration were used to study the possible effects o

The Pathology of the Vestibular System in CANVAS.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the site of lesion responsible for the severe, bilateral, symmetrical, selective loss of vestibular function in Cerebellar Ataxia with Neuronopathy and Vestibular Areflexia Syndrome (CANVAS), an adult-onset recessively-inherited ataxia, characterized by progressive imbalance due to a combination of cerebellar, somatosensory, and selective vestibular impairment with normal hearing. METHODS: Histologic examination of five temporal bones and the brainstems from four CANVAS patients and the brainstem only from one more, each diagnosed and followed from diagnosis to death by

The effects of noise on the vestibular system.

PURPOSE: Subjects with noise-induced hearing loss sometimes also complain about balance disorders, but reports of clinical series that give contradictory results are highly controversial. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of intense noise on the vestibular labyrinth, both in subjects with symmetrical hearing loss and in subjects with asymmetrical loss, and to examine the correlation between the subjects' complaints and the results of the vestibular function tests. METHODS: A total of 258 male military personnel, heavily exposed to various intense noises, were included in the stu

Prosthetic implantation of the human vestibular system.

HYPOTHESIS: A functional vestibular prosthesis can be implanted in human such that electrical stimulation of each semicircular canal produces canal-specific eye movements while preserving vestibular and auditory function. BACKGROUND: A number of vestibular disorders could be treated with prosthetic stimulation of the vestibular end organs. We have previously demonstrated in rhesus monkeys that a vestibular neurostimulator, based on the Nucleus Freedom cochlear implant, can produce canal-specific electrically evoked eye movements while preserving auditory and vestibular function. A comprehensive classification system of vestibular schwannomas.

Because traditional classifications of vestibular schwannomas (according to relative size) cannot comprehensively describe lesions that grow in different patterns after arising in regions as diverse as the cerebellopontine (CP) angle, the internal auditory canal, and the region lateral to the fundus of the internal auditory canal (labyrinth), we developed a new system to classify vestibular schwannomas, a system that describes the anatomical structures involved by the tumour, rather than size alone. The vestibular schwannoma is classified first by location and then by extent. Our system provid

Rebalancing the Vestibular System by Unidirectional Rotations in Patients With Chronic Vestibular Dysfunction.

Introduction: Vestibular dysfunction is a common disorder that results in debilitating symptoms. Even after full compensation, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) could be further improved by using rehabilitation exercises and visual-vestibular adaptation. We hypothesized that in patients with asymmetric vestibular function, the system could be rebalanced by unidirectional rotations toward the weaker side (i.e., a pure vestibular stimulation). Methods: Sixteen subjects (5 female and 11 male, 43.2 ± 17.0 years old) with chronic vestibular dysfunction that was non-responsive to other types of medi

The Contributions of Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials and Acoustic Vestibular Stimulation to Our Understanding of the Vestibular System.

Vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (VEMPs) are short-latency muscle reflexes typically recorded from the neck or eye muscles with surface electrodes. They are used clinically to assess otolith function, but are also interesting as they can provide information about the vestibular system and its activation by sound and vibration. Since the introduction of VEMPs more than 25 years ago, VEMPs have inspired animal and human research on the effects of acoustic vestibular stimulation on the vestibular organs, their projections and the postural muscles involved in vestibular reflexes.
