PURPOSE: In oral and maxillofacial surgery palatal mucosal grafts are routinely used to cover mucosal defects caused by vestibuloplasty. INTRODUCTION: Vestibuloplasty is a mucogingival procedure that aims to increase the vestibule and the amount of keratinized tissue (KT) around teeth and dental implants. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this paper is to introduce an effective technique to easily obtain adequate amounts of keratinized gingiva and vestibular depth.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Free gingiva (vertical height 10 mm) was harvested on the palatal mucosa and a partial thickness flap was elevated on the recipient site with same width as the free gingiva graft. After a conventional suture, a titanium mesh covered the graft and was fixed with miniscrews. Titanium mesh was removed 4.1±2.5 weeks after surgery. The amount of keratinized gingiva and vestibular depth was measured at the final follow-up.

BACKGROUND: A shallow vestibule, insufficient keratinized tissue width and pulling of marginal gingiva may be associated with gingival recession, plaque accumulation and gingivitis. Conventional techniques for treatment of gingival recession use autogenous or allogenic grafts. However, these methods result in soreness at the donor site and pose an economic burden, which may cause patients to withdraw from treatment. BACKGROUND: Adequate vestibular depth and attached gingiva are essential for successful periodontal and prosthetic rehabilitation. Vestibuloplasty is frequently performed to correct shallow vestibules; however, relapse due to scar formation remains a concern. A modified technique for augmentation of the severely atrophic edentulous maxillary alveolar ridge is described.
