Evaluating Veterans Response Teams and Police Interventions on Veterans' Health Care Utilization.

This study examined the effects of veteran-specific cooperative police interventions, including a Veterans Response Team (VRT) and broad collaboration between local police departments and a Veterans Affairs (VA) medical center police department (local-VA police [LVP]), on veterans' health care utilization. Data were analyzed on 241 veterans (51 received VRT and 190 received LVP intervention) in Wilmington, Delaware. Nearly all veterans in the sample were enrolled in VA health care at the time of police intervention. Veterans who received VRT or LVP interventions showed similar increases in use

Characterizing women veterans receiving seizure care in the veterans affairs healthcare system.

OBJECTIVE: The number and proportion of women served by the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is rapidly expanding, necessitating better characterization of factors unique to this population. While nascent literature has begun to better characterize women within the broader seizure population, women Veterans remain an understudied sample. To expand our clinical understanding of women with seizures, we assessed demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as psychiatric/military histories in women receiving care from an Epilepsy Center of Excellence within the VA Healthcare System. Do homeless veterans have the same needs and outcomes as non-veterans?

Although veterans have been found to be at increased risk for homelessness as compared to non-veterans, it is not clear whether those who are homeless have more severe health problems or poorer outcomes in community-based supported housing. This observational study compared 162 chronically homeless veterans to 388 non-veterans enrolled in a national-supported housing initiative over a 1-year period. Results showed that veterans tended to be older, were more likely to be in the Vietnam era age group, to be male, and were more likely to have completed high school than other chronically homeless

Mortality among Vietnam veterans compared with non-veterans and the Australian population.

A retrospective cohort study of mortality was conducted to assess whether the military service of young Australian men in Vietnam has influenced their overall death rates, or those from specific causes. The study was of all national servicemen who were conscripted during the conflict and served in the Army for at least 12 months. Of these, 19 205 served in Vietnam (veterans) while 25 677 served only in Australia (non-veterans). These men were traced from the end of their national service (between 1966 and 1973) until the beginning of 1982. For most causes of death, the observed number of death

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Justice Outreach Program: Connecting Justice-Involved Veterans with Mental Health and Substance Use Disorder Treatment.

The Veterans Justice Outreach (VJO) program of the U.S. Veterans Health Administration has a primary mission of linking military veterans in jails, courts, or in contact with law enforcement to mental health and substance use disorder treatment. National data of veterans with VJO contact were used to describe demographic characteristics, and mental health and substance use disorder diagnoses and treatment use and test correlates of treatment entry and engagement using multi-level logistic regression models. Of the 37,542 VJO veterans, treatment entry was associated with being homeless and havi

Care of women veterans.

As more women have joined the US military, there has been a shift in the overall veteran population. Those who served in the US military, especially women, have undergone experiences that will impact their overall health and wellbeing. It is therefore critical for providers to better understand US military culture and be prepared on how to ask patients about their military experience. Health care providers need to be aware of the unique medical, psychiatric, and psychosocial needs of women veterans in order to best serve this patient population.

Nightmares in Vietnam veterans.

Repetitive traumatic dreams remain a curiosity in our working with patients. If dreams have a sleep protecting or problem solving function, the dream that does not resolve but repeats and that disturbs rather than protects sleep remains an important clinical problem. We see in individual patient experiences and in civilian disasters samples of individuals who are unable to return their dream life to a condition in which it no longer repeats or disturbs their sleep. Clearly the recent experience of combat survivors of Vietnam becomes a major concern.

Trends in Homelessness and Social Sustainability: Veterans vs. Non-Veterans in the US.

Introduction: Social sustainability is deeply connected to the well-being of marginalized groups, and it is important to highlight how mental health impacts the social inclusion of homeless individuals, particularly veterans. Homelessness is a growing global issue, disproportionately affecting U.S. veterans, with mental health challenges playing a significant role in its onset and perpetuation. Purpose: This study aims to compare the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of homeless veterans and non-veterans in the U.S. Method: Using public data (N = 6295), this quantitative study appl

Psychosocial Outcomes Among Veteran and Non-Veteran Survivors of Sexual Assault.

Although it is well-established that sexual assault results in variable and long-lasting negative impacts on emotional well-being, perceptions of physical health, and relationship functioning, these "psychosocial" outcomes may vary based on the type(s) of sexual trauma experienced. To identify the differential impact of sexual trauma type(s) on psychosocial outcomes among veterans and non-veterans, we conducted a secondary analysis of data from the Comparative Health Assessment Interview Research Study, a large, national survey study sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Logic Model of the Department of Veterans Affairs' Role in Veterans Treatment Courts.

Veterans Treatment Courts (VTCs) grew exponentially in the last decade with more than 550 courts, dockets and tracks operating in the U.S. Eligibility criteria and operating practices of VTCs vary widely. Existing logic models guide the activities of these courts, but do not explicitly address the distinct missions and priorities of different agencies that support VTCs. To facilitate communication and research to address this gap, we propose a logic model of the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) role in VTCs. To construct the VA-VTC logic model, we adapted an existing logic model and held e

Access to care for transgender veterans in the Veterans Health Administration: 2006-2013.

A 2011 Veterans Health Administration directive mandated medically necessary care for transgender veterans. Internal education efforts informed staff of the directive and promoted greater access to care. For fiscal years 2006 through 2013, we identified 2662 unique individuals with International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision diagnoses related to transgender status in Veterans Health Administration medical records, with 40% of new cases in the 2 years following the directive. A bottom-up push for services by veterans and top-down education likely worked synergistically to speed imp

Incarcerated Veterans Outreach Program.

The objective of this study is to identify and facilitate re-entry services for military veterans in the Criminal Justice System through the Incarcerated Veteran Outreach Program. Veterans are explored as a subgroup of the general inmate jail populations in southern Ohio based upon veteran's status, military discharges, service-related injuries, treatment needs, pre-release planning, and re-entry services. Veterans reported having psycho-social problems, diverse levels of criminality, criminogenic needs, and significant episodes of homelessness. A sample of 399 incarcerated veterans in state p

Women Veterans as caregivers: Characteristics and comparisons with women non-veterans using BRFSS.

Veterans frequently need assistance because of injuries and chronic conditions, but also serve as caregivers to family and friends. Our aim was to describe the prevalence of characteristics and experiences of women veterans who serve as caregivers and compare them with non-veteran women. We measured caregiving prevalence caregiving among women veterans (N = 4,179) and women non-veterans (n = 160,307) using population-based data from 48 jurisdictions in the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System from 2021 to 2022. We calculated weighted prevalence estimates and adjusted prevalence ratios [P

Personality Disorder Diagnosis Among Justice-Involved Veterans: An Investigation of VA Using Veterans.

Justice-involved veterans are more likely to experience myriad mental health sequelae. Nonetheless, examination of personality psychopathology among justice-involved veterans remains limited, with studies focused on males within correctional settings. We examined Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) electronic medical records for 1,534,108 (12.28% justice-involved) male and 127,230 (8.79% justice-involved) female veterans. Male and female veterans accessing VA justice-related services were both approximately three times more likely to have a personality disorder diagnosis relative to those with

Fibromyalgia syndrome care of Iraq- and Afghanistan-deployed Veterans in Veterans Health Administration.

Little is known regarding fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) care among Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OIF/OEF/OND) Veterans. Current recommendations include interdisciplinary, team-based combined care approaches and limited opioid use. In this study of OIF/OEF/OND Veterans who accessed Veterans Health Administration services between 2002 and 2012, we hypothesized that combined care (defined as at least 4 primary care visits/yr with visits to mental health and/or rheumatology) versus <4 primary care visits/yr only would be associated with lower risk of at least

Migration by Veterans Who Received Homeless Services From the Department of Veterans Affairs.

We examined migration patterns among 113,400 homeless veterans, focusing on the prevalence and the basic geographic patterns of this migration. Data were for all veterans who initiated use of Veterans Affairs homeless services in 2011 or 2012; and we followed them using Veterans Affairs administrative records for up to 2 years following this initial contact. Results showed that 15.3% of the veterans migrated across regions while homeless. Those who were homeless for longer periods were more likely to migrate, and migration, were it to occur, was most likely earlier on in veterans' homelessness

PTSD diagnostic validity in Veterans Affairs electronic records of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Administrative planning and policy decisions frequently rely on diagnostic data extracted from large electronic databases. However, the accuracy of this diagnostic information is uncertain. The present study examined the degree to which various diagnoses of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) within Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) electronic databases were concordant with PTSD diagnostic status determined by standardized diagnostic interview. METHOD: We interviewed 1,649 veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars using the PTSD Module of the Structured Clinical Interview for DS
