Understanding and managing the health needs of veterans.

Military service has many possible consequences for an individual's health. However, the health needs of veterans are not well understood by healthcare professionals. A veteran may present with overlapping symptoms of mental and physical ill health. Problems such as hazardous levels of alcohol consumption and aggressive behaviour may be evident alongside anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, chronic pain and disfigurement. Female veterans may present with other complex health issues, such as military sexual trauma. The author suggests that pre-registration curricula for all heal

Dispositional gratitude and mental health in the U.S. veteran population: Results from the National Health and Resilience Veterans Study.

Dispositional gratitude may be linked to positive mental health outcomes, yet population-based data on this association are lacking. Military veterans are an ideal population in which to examine this question given high rates of psychiatric morbidities and efforts to promote psychological resilience in this population. Data were analyzed from a nationally representative sample of 3151 U.S. veterans. Veterans were separated into three groups based on an assessment of level of dispositional gratitude: high gratitude (weighted 79.8%), moderate gratitude (9.6%), and low gratitude (10.5%). Multivar

Assessing Rural Veterans' Experiences with a Tele-Nephrology Program in the Veterans Health Administration.

INTRODUCTION: Rural-living veterans with chronic kidney disease and refractory hypertension have a higher mortality rate and are hospitalized more frequently than veterans living in urban or suburban areas. They also face particularly unique challenges in accessing nephrology specialty care. Previous studies suggest virtual nephrology care can be used to increase access to care for veterans. The purpose of this study was to examine veteran's perceptions and experiences with a veteran administration (VA) virtual nephrology program. METHODS: We conducted semi-structured interviews with forty-fo

Prescription Opioid Use Among Seriously Mentally Ill Veterans Nationally in the Veterans Health Administration.

Frequent prescription opioid use has been recognized as a growing problem but there have been no studies specifically among veterans with serious mental illness (SMI). National data from the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) during Fiscal Year 2012 show that VHA patients with SMI receive more opioid prescriptions than other veterans. Additionally, high numbers of opioid prescriptions is associated with greater use of anxiolytics/sedative-hypnotics, drug dependence and COPD-all of which pose an increased risk of respiratory depression and falls and warrant substantial caution and improved co

The Veterans Millennium Health Care and Benefits Act. Department of Veterans Affairs. Final rule.

This document amends Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) adjudication regulations to reflect changes made by the Veterans Millennium Health Care and Benefits Act. These changes concern payment of dependency and indemnity compensation to the surviving spouses of certain former prisoners of war; the provision of health care, education and home loan benefits to surviving spouses upon termination of their remarriages; and the addition of bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma to the list of diseases that VA presumes are the result of exposure to radiation during active military service.

Improving the response choices on the veterans SF-36 health survey role functioning scales: results from the Veterans Health Study.

Role functioning and its limitations due to one's health is an important aspect of health-related quality of life (HRQoL). The Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) SF-36 includes 2 role functioning scales: role limitations due to physical health problems (RP) or emotional problems (RE). Although they capture important concepts of HRQoL, these 2 scales have some limitations in their measurement properties. Using dichotomized sets of response choices, the scales are limited in their distributional properties (eg, higher standard deviation than other SF-36 scales) and ability to discriminate between clin

Addressing Veterans' Mental Health in Community-Based Care.

United States Veterans are at an elevated risk for suicide despite the expansion of public outreach initiatives. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care centers may not be accessible to a large proportion of Veterans, but on the other hand, community-based physicians often do not feel they have tools to meet these patients' unique needs. This issue may be addressed via collaboration between VA and community-based providers to develop military cultural competence alongside increased education on the breadth of resources available to Veteran patients.
