Women have played a vital role in the U.S. military for decades, with their presence steadily increasing. However, despite this growth, research on the unique occupational and environmental exposures they face remains limited, highlighting the need for greater understanding to improve reproductive health outcomes. Chemical exposures such as burn pit emissions, airborne particulates, heavy metals, and pesticides can disrupt hormone regulation and pose risks for fertility, miscarriage, preterm birth, and congenital anomalies. Additional risks include unsafe water sources, contaminated soil, incr

Transitioning from military service is stressful for veterans with service-connected disabilities seeking civilian employment. This descriptive study examined self-assessed mental health, well-being, and substance use of men and women shortly before or after transition from US military service, compared to norms from community and military samples. As part of a prospective study evaluating an innovative employment program, researchers interviewed 229 current and former service members with service-connected disabilities transitioning from U.S. military service. Compared to published norms, res

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death in the United States and is disproportionately higher among veterans than nonveterans. We examined the prevalence of nicotine dependence and its associated risk factors among veterans who used health services in the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) system.
METHODS: Using a case-control design, we compared all VA health service users in fiscal year 2008-2009 (N = 5,031,381) who received a nicotine dependence diagnosis with those who did not. Independent risk and protective factors associated with receiving a nicotine dep

OBJECTIVE: This study compared client characteristics, service use, and health care costs of two groups of veterans who were contacted by outreach workers: a group of veterans who were contacted while incarcerated at the Los Angeles jail and a group of homeless veterans who were contacted in community settings.
METHODS: Between May 1, 1997, and October 1, 1999, a total of 1,676 veterans who were in jail and 6,560 community homeless veterans were assessed through a structured intake procedure that documented their demographic, clinical, and social adjustment characteristics. Data on the use an

BACKGROUND: Over 35% of returned Iraq and Afghanistan veterans in VA care have received mental health diagnoses; the most prevalent is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Little is known about these patients' use of non-mental health medical services and the impact of mental disorders on utilization.
OBJECTIVE: To compare utilization across three groups of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans: those without mental disorders, those with mental disorders other than PTSD, and those with PTSD.
DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: National, descriptive study of 249,440 veterans newly utilizing VA healthcare betw

INTRODUCTION: The transition from military to civilian life can bring about substantive challenges for U.S. veterans. The purpose of this study was to examine veterans' trajectories of psychological health prior to and after separation, and to examine whether veterans who engaged in more physical activity would report better psychological health over time.
METHODS: Longitudinal data between 2001 and 2016 from the Millennium Cohort Study were analyzed, which consisted of U.S. military personnel who separated from service, followed up every 3-5 years. Veterans (N=37,464, Mage=36.3 years, SD=10.

Tobacco use is a substantial problem for veterans using Veterans Health Administration (VHA) services, but relatively little is known about the association of specific patient characteristics, patterns of service use, the amount of such services, and the frequency of their use. Analysis of national VHA administrative data (N = 5,531,379) from fiscal year 2012 (FY2012) were used to identify use of tobacco cessation counseling services among veterans with a diagnosed tobacco use disorder, and to examine correlates of such use. Only 3.8% of veterans diagnosed with a tobacco use disorder used VHA

BACKGROUND: Longer duration of treatment with medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) is associated with improved outcomes, but long-term retention remains a challenge. Research is needed to identify psychosocial interventions that support MOUD retention. To address this gap, we examined associations between a wide range of psychosocial services and buprenorphine treatment discontinuation across 18 months among a large cohort of Veterans initiating buprenorphine nationwide.
METHODS: We identified a cohort of patients with new buprenorphine initiation in 2017-2018 in Veterans Health Administ

Mental disorders have been linked to unemployment among veterans. Improving mental health conditions, such as depression, can improve veteran employment outcomes. This study compared mental health treatment among unemployed Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF; in Afghanistan) and Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF; in Iraq) veterans and veterans from other service eras. The study included 3165 unemployed veterans from six Veterans Affairs medical centers with a positive screen that indicates a possible mental disorder. Chi-squared tests and logistic regression analyses assessed whether veteran era was a

OBJECTIVES: Veteran homelessness has declined in the past decade, but the proportion of unsheltered homeless veterans has increased. We identified characteristics of unsheltered homelessness in a large contemporary veteran cohort and examined outpatient and inpatient encounters before and after intake to US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) homeless programs.
METHODS: National data from the Homeless Operations Management Evaluation System (HOMES) database and the Corporate Data Warehouse were analyzed on 191 204 veterans experiencing housing instability from January 2018 through December 20

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is associated with poor health outcomes, including lack of access to care. Homelessness experienced in rural areas is understudied but likely associated with difficulty accessing needed services. Prior studies have assessed the extent to which Veterans experiencing homelessness in rural areas "migrate" to urban areas, but have not focused on changes in services utilization following migration.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Veterans with a history of homelessness experience changes in the use of homeless and health services following a migration from a rural to urban

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal (MSK) pain is common among women veterans and may be exacerbated during pregnancy and postpartum. However, little is known regarding pregnant veterans' engagement with chiropractic, complementary and integrative health (CIH), and Whole Health (e.g., health and wellness coaching) services in this population.
METHODS: Pregnant and postpartum veterans were identified from a longitudinal, prospective, multisite cohort study. Demographic and clinical characteristics were collected via Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) electronic health record and study survey data.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to compare gender differences in mental health disease burden and outpatient mental health utilization among veterans utilizing Veterans Health Administration (VHA) mental health services in fiscal year 1999 (FY99), after the first Gulf War and significant restructuring of VHA services.
METHODS: We used logistic regression to examine the relationships among gender, age, diagnostic groups, and utilization of mental health and specialty mental health services in a national sample of veterans. The sample included 782,789 veterans with at least 1 outpatien

BACKGROUND: Differences in healthcare delivery systems and pathways to mental healthcare for Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) members and Veterans may contribute to variations in mental health services use (MHSU) and the factors associated with it. We: (1) estimated the prevalence of past 12-month MHSU (≥1 visit with a medical or mental health professional); and (2) identified sociodemographic, military-, trauma-, and health-related variables associated with MHSU among CAF members and Veterans.
METHODS: The current study used data from the 2018 CAF Members and Veterans Mental Health Follow-Up Surv

BACKGROUND: There is concern surrounding the psychological health and uptake of treatment services among veterans of the UK Armed Forces.
METHOD: Data from a cross-sectional, nationally representative sample were used to compare health outcomes and treatment seeking among 257 post-national service veterans aged 16-64 years and 504 age and sex frequency-matched non-veterans living in the community in England. Early leavers (<4 years service) were compared with longer serving veterans.
RESULTS: Male veterans reported more childhood adversity and were more likely to have experienced a major tra

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) veterans have a greater prevalence of suicide morbidity and mortality than cisgender veterans. Gender-affirming surgery (GAS) has been shown to improve mental health for TGD veterans. In 2021, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) announced the initiation of a rulemaking process to cover GAS for TGD patients.
OBJECTIVE: This study explores patients' and providers' perspectives about access to GAS and other gender-affirming medical interventions not offered in the VHA including barriers, facilitators, and clinical and policy recommendations.

In 2018, the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) established the original 19 Headache Centers of Excellence (HCoE) program, and an evaluation center. This study utilized a Veteran engagement group method to elicit input from Veteran patients living with chronic headache on daily needs, social determinants of health, and preferences and suggestions for headache programs, services, and research priorities. Four engagement groups were conducted between July 13th and August 22nd of 2022 with Veterans who experience headache and received care at a VHA HCoE. Engagement groups were audio-recorded, d

Low relationship satisfaction is associated with mental health disorders in service members/veterans (SM/Vs), yet eating disordered behavior (EDB) and sexual function and satisfaction in SM/Vs are understudied. Those with EDB may experience bodily discomfort that may be associated with low relationship satisfaction because of avoidance of physical contact and intimacy, suggesting that sexual satisfaction and function may modify the association of EDB and relationship satisfaction. As the majority of female SM/Vs are partnered, it is imperative to study the association of sexual function and sa

OBJECTIVES: In 2003, it was reported that motor neurone disease was linked to military service in the 1990-1991 Gulf War. A large study in the US confirmed an association with military service but found no association with specific conflicts or length of service. Non-veteran studies have suggested an association with physical activity, smoking and other risk factors. We used data from the Scottish Veterans Health Study to investigate the association between motor neurone disease and military service in UK veterans.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 57,000 veterans born 1945-1985, and 173

BACKGROUND: In recognition of the incidence of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has, since 2007, examined returning U.S. service members for symptoms of TBI, a pre-condition for VA treatment of TBI. This study characterizes "Traumatic Brain Injury screen" service delivery, according to the barrier and facilitator viewpoints of those experiencing the delivery.
METHODS: The purposeful sample comprised both Veteran patient and VA staff participants in the TBI screen program (n = 64), including patients (n = 14), health
