Honeybee Exposure to Veterinary Drugs: How Is the Gut Microbiota Affected?

Several studies have outlined that a balanced gut microbiota offers metabolic and protective functions supporting honeybee health and performance. The present work contributes to increasing knowledge on the impact on the honeybee gut microbiota of the three most common veterinary drugs (oxytetracycline, sulfonamides, and tylosin). The study was designed with a semi-field approach in micro-hives containing about 500 honeybees. Micro-hives were located in an incubator during the day and moved outdoors in the late afternoon, considering the restrictions on the use of antibiotics in the open field

Sorption behaviors of antimicrobial and antiparasitic veterinary drugs on subtropical soils.

Brazil is one of the world's largest producers of animal protein, requiring the large-scale use of veterinary drugs. The administration of antimicrobials and antiparasitics is a common practice. However, there is a lack of information on how these drugs impact the environment. Antimicrobials are capable of altering the soil microbial population and are responsible for the development of multidrug-resistant microbial strains. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the fate and transport of these compounds in the environment, and one parameter used for this purpose is the soil-water partition co

Concurrent use of veterinary drugs and herbal medicines in racing standardbreds.

Standardbred trainers from 1 racetrack and 7 off-track training facilities were surveyed to determine the most common drugs, and prevalence of concurrent herb administration. Furosemide (on-track) and anti-inflammatory drugs (off-track) were the most common drugs administered. Among horses on-track, 9.8% received herbs compared with 13.8% off-track horses; 67% and 58% of these horses, respectively, received concurrent drugs.

Veterinary Drug Prescribing Practices at Selected District Veterinary Clinics of Rift Valley Areas of Ethiopia.

The rational use of drugs in veterinary medicine has various significances, such as reducing the risk of drug resistance, increasing efficacy, reducing drug residue, and decreasing adverse drug reactions. A retrospective study was conducted to assess veterinary drug prescribing practices at Batu and Arsi-Negelle district veterinary clinics in the rift valley areas of Ethiopia. A total of 2,464 cases were recorded from the case registration books at both the clinics for diseases treated between September 2012 and February 2015. The study results showed that for a total of 2,464 cases diagnosed

Occurrence, fate, and environmental loss of antiparasitic veterinary drugs in animal waste.

Antiparasitic veterinary drugs, specifically anthelmintics, anticoccidials and ectoparasiticides, are increasingly recognised as global environmental contaminants, entering agroecosystems primarily via animal excreta and accumulating in manure and slurry before transfer to soils, water bodies and crops. This review provides a comprehensive synthesis of these drug classes, covering usage patterns, excretion and persistence dynamics, occurrence in manure and slurry, within-manure transformation pathways, environmental fate and transport pathways, ecotoxicological effects on non-target organism,

Pediatric acepromazine poisoning: the importance of child-resistant packaging for veterinary drugs.

The first reported case of acepromazine ingestion in a pediatric patient is presented. It is an aliphatic phenothiazine that is structurally similar to chlorpromazine (thorazine). In our case, a 2 1/2-year-old male ingested 3 to 4 of his 80-pound Doberman's 25-mg tablets. The pills were stored in a vial without a child-resistant closure. The child displayed signs and symptoms of phenothiazine toxicity. There is no federal law which requires veterinary medicines to be dispensed in special packaging. All prescription medications should require child-resistant packaging.

A questionnaire for the clinical assessment of veterinary adverse drug reactions.

Despite widespread occurrence of adverse drug reactions (ADRs), their clinical identification has been a nonreproductible act of unspecified subjective judgment. Adequate criteria have not been available for diagnostic decisions about the cause of an observed clinical manifestation. To improve scientific precision in diagnosis of ADRs, the ADR questionnaire has been developed to rank the probability of linking a drug to a suspected clinical manifestation. The questionnaire provides a scoring system for six axes of decision strategy: previous general experience with the drug, alternative etiolo

Bioluminescent bacteria assay of veterinary drugs in excreta of food-producing animals.

The residues of pharmacological treatments on food-producing animals, present in the manure dispersed on agricultural land, can impact environmental and human health through toxic, genotoxic, and drug-resistance development effects. Biotoxicity assays can easily reveal the presence of noxious substances and those based on bioluminescent bacteria (BLB) are particularly simple and rapid. A BLB assay was developed as microplate format by using various strains of Vibrio sp. and was employed to evaluate their response to pure antibiotic solutions and to residues extracted from excreta of antibiotic

Some Aspects and Convergence of Human and Veterinary Drug Repositioning.

Drug innovation traditionally follows a de novo approach with new molecules through a complex preclinical and clinical pathway. In addition to this strategy, drug repositioning has also become an important complementary approach, which can be shorter, cheaper, and less risky. This review provides an overview of drug innovation in both human and veterinary medicine, with a focus on drug repositioning. The evolution of drug repositioning and the effectiveness of this approach are presented, including the growing role of data science and computational modeling methods in identifying drugs with po

Drug Misuse in the Veterinary Setting: an Under-recognized Avenue.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Prescription drug misuse is a public health concern. Governments are attempting to restrict the incidence of medication diversion by establishing laws to curb drug access from human healthcare providers. Veterinarians, who also prescribe controlled substances and see hundreds of millions of patients annually in the USA, are often overlooked as a source of prescription drug misuse. RECENT FINDINGS: Evidence suggests that drug misuse occurs in the veterinary setting, and veterinarians acknowledge this as a common problem. Although analgesics are alleged to be the most common

Reducing Veterinary Drug Residues in Animal Products: A Review.

A survey we conducted suggests that the ingestion of veterinary drug residues in edible animal parts constitutes a potential health hazard for its consumers, including, specifically, the possibility of developing multidrug resistance, carcinogenicity, and disruption of intestinal normal microflora. The survey results indicated that antibiotics, parasitic drugs, anticoccidial, or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are broadly used, and this use in livestock is associated with the appearance of residues in various animal products such as milk, meat, and eggs. We observed that differen

Health concerns and management of select veterinary drug residues.

The aim of this manuscript is to review the potential adverse health effects in humans if exposed to residues of selected veterinary drugs used in food-producing animals. Our other objectives are to briefly inform the reader of why many of these drugs are or were approved for use in livestock production and how drug residues can be mitigated for these drugs. The selected drugs include several antimicrobials, beta agonists, and phenylbutazone. The antimicrobials continue to be of regulatory concern not only because of their acute adverse effects but also because their use as growth promoters ha

Broad spectrum detection of veterinary drugs with a highly stable metal-organic framework.

The broad spectrum detection of veterinary drugs is very important for rapid and large-scale safe screen of animal-derived foods. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), as a kind of emerged functional porous materials are quite promising in the chemical sensing and molecular detection. In this work, we report the high-performance broad spectrum detection of 15 commonly-used veterinary drugs through the fluorescence quenching in a newly-designed chemically stable Al-based MOF, Al3(μ3-O)(OH)(H2O)2(PPTTA)3/2 (BUT-22). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first systematic investigation for the appl

Interactions of anthelmintic veterinary drugs with the soil microbiota: Toxicity or enhanced biodegradation?

Anthelmintic (AH) compounds are used to control gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs) in livestock production. They are only partially metabolized in animals ending in animal excreta whose use as manures leads to AH dispersal in agricultural soils. Once in soil, AHs interact with soil microorganisms, with the outcome being either detrimental, or beneficial. We aimed to disentangle the mechanisms of these complex interactions. Two soils previously identified as « fast » or « slow», regarding the degradation of albendazole (ABZ), ivermectin (IVM), and eprinomectin (EPM), were subjected to repeated a

Occurrence of 13 veterinary drugs in animal manure-amended soils in Eastern China.

The occurrence of 13 veterinary drugs were studied in soil fertilized with animal manures in Eastern China. The 69 soil samples were obtained from twenty-three vegetable fields in 2009 and analysed for selected veterinary drugs by HPLC-MS/MS at soil depths of 0-20, 20-40 and 40-60 cm, and two additional samples were re-analysed from an earlier study from November 2011. Results showed that animal wastes, especially those from poultry farms, were one of pollution sources of veterinary drugs in soil. The detection frequency of veterinary drugs in soil was 83%, 91% and 87% in the three soil depths
