Is vibration-induced white finger a reversible syndrome if vibration is stopped?

The purpose of the study was to investigate if vibration-induced white finger may be a reversible symptom after cessation of vibration exposure. Fifty-nine welders, previously employed by a ship building company and who had shown various levels of vibration-induced vasospastic symptoms in the hand were interviewed 5 to 6 years after closure of the company. Out of the 43 patients exposed to no or insignificant vibration subsequently, 28 claimed improvement, 11 claimed unchanged problems and four complained of worse problems. Twelve of these patients had the cold provocation test repeated at fol

Good or bad vibrations? Impacts of anthropogenic vibration on the marine epibenthos.

Anthropogenic activities directly contacting the seabed, such as drilling and pile-driving, produce a significant vibration likely to impact benthic invertebrates. As with terrestrial organisms, vibration may be used by marine species for the detection of biotic and abiotic cues, yet the significance of this and the sensitivities to vibration are previously undocumented for many marine species. Exposure to additional vibration may elicit behavioral or physiological change, or even physical damage at high amplitudes or particular frequencies, although this is poorly studied in underwater noise

[Effect of vibrational factors on the evaluation of whole-body vibrational intensity].

The aim of this study is to obtain basic data useful to evaluate the riding comfort of railway vehicles. The apparatus used in the present experiment made it possible to simulate various vibrations of railway vehicles. Twenty-two adult subjects participated in this experiment. They were exposed to lateral vibration with varying peak and root mean square (rms) accelerations and frequencies. The types and ranges of vibrations used in this experiment approximated to the typical vibrations of railway vehicles. The subjects were asked to rate the intensity of each vibration given to them successive

Hand-arm vibration syndrome.

The hand-arm vibration syndrome affects workers who perform tasks that generate vibration. Raynaud's phenomenon and sensory impairment of the fingers are the predominant effects. A history of hand-arm vibration (HAV) exposure in a patient with these symptoms should alert the physician to the diagnosis. Referral to a special clinic or hospital department for multiple clinical tests is required to confirm the diagnosis and, using the Stockholm classification, to grade the severity in each hand. The assessment permits the patient to be monitored either for progression of or recovery from the synd

Vibration arthrometry. A preview.

Throughout the ages, physicians have listened to sounds and felt vibrations from human joints in their attempts to diagnose pathology. They have used a wide vocabulary to describe these phenomena, but technology has been slow to provide recording and analytic equipment. Lately, accelerometers have been used with considerable success in a new noninvasive method now known as vibration arthrometry (formerly "arthrography"). The technique has been used in early detection of congenital dislocation of the hip and also in diagnosis of meniscal pathology. More recently, patellar vibration has been use

Vibration and passenger comfort.

The problems of maintaining the well-being of passengers travelling by public transport are complex. They include psychological, physical and organisational considerations all of which may interact to provide an overall, individual comfort reaction. Since it is a fundamental feature of vehicle design, the paper considers the effects of vehicular vibration on passenger comfort. The results of a series of questionnaire investigations to examine both the qualitative and quantitative effects of vibration are reported.

Noise analysis and vibration control of flow-induced vibration in the rotating detonation combustor.

The persistent operation of rotating detonation engines (RDEs) is severely constrained by intense combustion chamber vibrations and excessive noise emissions. Existing research on engine noise has been predominantly confined to experimental investigations of noise generation mechanisms and sound pressure levels, leaving critical gaps in predictive modeling. To address this, this study employs a numerical methodology for analyzing transient flow fields within the combustion chamber, enabling systematic characterization of vibration-coupled noise phenomena. Leveraging this computational approach

Amplified Pilot Head Vibration and the Effects of Vibration Mitigation on Neck Muscle Strain.

INTRODUCTION: Rotary wing pilot neck strain is increasing in prevalence due to the combined effects of head supported mass (e.g., Night Vision Goggles, head mounted displays) and whole-body vibration. This study examined the physiological responses of pilots during exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) representative of the National Research Council's Bell 412 helicopter in forward flight. WBV levels were measured and evaluated using the ISO-2631-1-1997 WBV standards. METHODS: Twelve pilots (aged 20-59 yr, 7 of the 12 with 20+ years flight experience) underwent six 15-min vibration trials on

Vibrotactile difference thresholds: effects of vibration frequency, vibration magnitude, contact area, and body location.

It has not been established whether the smallest perceptible change in the intensity of vibrotactile stimuli depends on the somatosensory channel mediating the sensation. This study investigated intensity difference thresholds for vibration using contact conditions (different frequencies, magnitudes, contact areas, body locations) selected so that perception would be mediated by more than one psychophysical channel. It was hypothesized that difference thresholds mediated by the non-Pacinian I (NPI) channel and the Pacinian (P) channel would differ. Using two different contactors (1-mm diameter

Factors influencing vibration sense thresholds used to assess occupational exposures to hand transmitted vibration.

The effects of various conditions, including temporary threshold shifts (TTS) induced by exposure to vibration on vibration sense thresholds, have been investigated. The vibration sense thresholds of five subjects were measured on the middle fingertip of the left hand. A contactor with a diameter of 7 mm was surrounded by three alternative plates with holes of different sizes. The contact force was controlled at either 1 N, 2 N, or 3 N. For the TTS test, the left hand was exposed to vibration at 20 ms-2 rms for five minutes. The frequencies of both the exposure to vibration and the vibration t

Floor vibrations for motivation and feedback in the rat vibration actuating search task.

Motivating rodents to perform cognitive tasks often relies on the application of aversive stimuli. The Vibration Actuating Search Task (VAST) is a novel open-field task in which gradient floor vibration provides motivation for the rodent to navigate in the direction of diminishing vibration to an unmarked target destination. Using floor vibration as a motivational stimulus may overcome several of the potential confounds associated with stimuli used in other tasks. In a series of three experiments, we determined whether (1) rats exhibit place preference for floor vibration over other aversive s

Multiple vibration displacements at multiple vibration frequencies stress impact on human femur computational analysis.

Whole-body vibration training using single-frequency methods has been reported to improve bone mineral density. However, the intensities can exceed safe levels and have drawn unfavorable comments from subjects. In a previous article, whole-body vibration training using multiple vibration displacements at multiple vibration frequencies (MVDMVF) was reported. This article presents the computational simulation evaluation of stress dispersion on a femur with and without the MVDMVF input. A model of bone femur was developed from a computed tomography image of the lower limb with Mimics software fro
