Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe life-threatening infection of the deep subcutaneous tissues and fascia. Infection with Vibrio vulnificus, a halophilic Gram-negative bacillus found worldwide in warm coastal waters, can lead to severe complications, particularly among patients with chronic liver diseases. We herein present an unusual case of necrotizing fasciitis caused by V. vulnificus triggered by acupuncture needle insertion. The patient, who suffered from diabetes mellitus and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and worked at a fish hatchery, denied any injury prior to acupuncture. This is th

Aeromonas hydrophila is a facultatively anaerobic, asporogenous gram-negative rod that has often been regarded as an opportunistic pathogen in hosts with impairment of a local or general defense mechanism. A 68-year-old alcoholic woman presented with shock and gangrene on the right arm. At first, her clinical presentations were severe painful erythematous swelling that worsened within a few hours with development of gangrene, edema, and blisters. Bullous fluid and blood cultures yielded A. hydrophila. Histopathological findings of sections obtained from the vesicle revealed subepidermal vesicl

Vibrio vulnificus is a Gram-negative bacterium that causes an aggressive infection with high mortality, especially in patients with liver disease. Wound infections due to V. vulnificus occur via direct contamination of cutaneous tissues and can include the uterus. We report a case of V. vulnificus tubo-ovarian infection from an unusual method of acquisition in the Gulf of Mexico.

Vibrio vulnificus is a potentially lethal marine bacterium that has not been previously described in podiatric literature. A review of the microorganism's characteristics, susceptible patient population, and lower extremity manifestations of infection is presented. V. vulnificus is found as part of the normal flora of the Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic, and Pacific coastal waters and is often isolated from the filter feeding shellfish of these regions. Its pathogenicity is generally reserved for the immunocompromised host, and is specifically related to disease states which exhibit high serum iron l

Vibrio vulnificus is a highly pathogenic marine bacterium that can cause life-threatening conditions such as septicemia and necrotizing fasciitis; in medically fragile individuals, mortality rates can exceed 50%. Its virulence factors, including the MARTX toxin and hemolysin VvhA, function to disrupt host cells, evade immune responses, and facilitate bacterial dissemination. Climate warming has dramatically expanded the geographic range of V. vulnificus, doubling infection risks in high-latitude northern waters, while microplastic pollution and extreme weather events further enhance its ecolog

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of Vibrio vulnificus heavily depends on the temperature and salinity of the sea water. In the course of climate change an increase in cases of fatal sepsis caused by V. vulnificus at the German Baltic Sea coast could be detected.
OBJECTIVE: To generate awareness for a life-threatening infection with increasing incidence in Germany.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This article presents an overview of the current state of the literature followed by an exemplary description of cases with V vulnificus sepsis caused by contact with water in the Baltic Sea, which were treated at t

Vibrio vulnificus usually causes wound infection, gastroenteritis, and septicemia. However, it is a rare conditional pathogen causing meningoencephalitis. We report a case of a young, immunocompromised man presenting with severe sepsis after exposure to sea water and consumption of seafood. The patient subsequently developed meningoencephalitis, and Vibrio vulnificus was isolated from his blood culture. The sequence was confirmed by Next-generation sequencing of a sample of cerebrospinal fluid, as well as from a bacteria culture. After the pathogen was detected, the patient was treated with ce

A 73-year-old man with advanced lung cancer ate raw fish the day before being admitted to our hospital with severe abdominal pain, fever and vomiting. Soon afterward he fell into shock and disseminated intravenous coagulation. A CT scan revealed invagination and emergency surgery was performed. On the first day after surgery, Vibrio vulnificus was cultured from his ascites and blood. The infection was controlled by antibiotic treatment and he was discharged 23 days after the surgery. Vibrio vulnificus infection is an opportunistic infection that develops mostly in patients with liver cirrhosis

Vibrio vulnificus is a gram-negative marine bacterium that may cause local wound infection, distinctive soft tissue infection, gastroenteritis and septicaemia with a high mortality rate. A healthy man presented with severe abdominal pain, diarrhoea and fever followed by development of multiple blisters, cellulitis and necrotizing fasciitis of the lower limbs, who progressed rapidly to fulminant sepsis caused by this organism. Vibrio vulnificus septicaemia should be suspected in the presence of sepsis and progressive soft-tissue infection with recent history of raw seafood consumption.

Vibrio vulnificus is found globally in marine coastal waters. Infection with this organism, via ingestion of raw shellfish or exposure to marine water, can cause necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis, which have high mortality and short latency. In Japan, many cases have been reported since 1980, mainly from hospitals in western prefectures. However, because of the sporadic nature of infection outbreaks, a thorough epidemiologic survey has not been done. We studied the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of Vibrio vulnificus infections reported in Japan from 1975 to 2005. We identified 185

Vibrio vulnificus is a causative agent of serious food-borne diseases in humans related to consumption of raw seafoods. This human pathogen secretes a metalloprotease (VVP) that evokes enhancement of the vascular permeability and disruption of the capillaries. Production of microbial proteases is generally induced at early stationary phase of its growth. This cell density dependent regulation of VVP production in V. vulnificus known to be the quorum-sensing. When V. vulnificus was cultivated in Luria-Bertani (LB) medium, accumulation of the autoinducer, the signal molecule operating the quorum

Vibrio vulnificus is a halophilic gram-negative rod widespread in the aquatic environment and associated with primary septicemia and severe wound infections. The first Swedish case was reported in 1994. Ever since, sporadic cases have occurred in the south of Sweden whenever the coastal water temperature has exceeded 20 degrees C. Critical for a successful outcome in these infections has been early diagnosis with appropriate antibiotic and surgical treatment. A review of this subject was prompted by two cases of fulminant septicemia, which both presented themselves as atypical erysipelas.

A 66-year-old male with chronic alcoholic liver injury was admitted on July 27, 1986 to our hospital with complaints of high fever, convulsion and skin erythema. He had consumed raw fish 3 days before, and had a scratch wound over the right arm and left leg because he had slipped in a small stream in the woods the day before admission. He was already in shock state with sepsis of V. vulnificus and DIC on admission. Although the treatment with ABPC, CP, CAZ, MINO for sepsis, and Heparin & Antithrombin III for DIC was immediately begun, he died only 10 hours after admission. On autopsy, the skin

Vibrio vulnificus is a highly virulent gram-negative aquatic bacterium found in warm brackish waters and in molluscum shellfish worldwide that can cause sepsis after ingestion of raw oysters or undercooked molluscum shellfish as well as deadly skin and soft-tissue infections from immersion in contaminated seawater. Populations at a higher risk of infections are men older than 60 years with diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis, renal disease, or elevated iron levels and those who are immunocompromised. Three severe syndromes caused by V. vulnificus are gastroenteritis, primary septicemia, and wou

Vibrio vulnificus (V. vulnificus) is a Gram-negative, halophilic bacillus known for causing severe infections such as gastroenteritis, necrotizing fasciitis, and septic shock, with mortality rates exceeding 50% in high-risk individuals. Transmission occurs primarily through the consumption of contaminated seafood, exposure of open wounds to infected water, or, in rare cases, insect bites. The bacterium thrives in warm, brackish waters with high salinity levels, and its prevalence is rising due to the effects of climate change, including warming ocean temperatures and expanding coastal habitats

A 63-year-old male with liver cirrhosis due to type-C hepatitis virus was admitted on June 14, 1999 to our hospital with complaints of dyspnea, and blisters, swelling and purpuras on his legs. He had consumed raw fish one or two days before. He was already in a state of shock with sepsis and disseminated intravascular coagulation shortly after the admission. Although treatment with MEPM and MINO for sepsis, and daltepalin sodium, antithrombin III and gabexate mesilate for disseminated intravascular coagulation was begun within 12 hours, he died only 30 hours after admission. Vibrio vulnificus is a lactose positive Gram negative rod that lives in warm seas and can infect wounds and produce sepsis. Its infection is acquired after eating oysters or other filtering marine organisms. We report a 53 years old diabetic male who started with fever after a voyage to Central America. He was admitted febrile, hypotense, dehydrated and polypneic. Painful erythematous lesions and lumps were observed in his upper and lower limbs. After 72 hours of evolution, the lesions became violaceous, with crepitating vesicles full of hemorrhagic exudate. He developed a renal failure and a

The clinical features and laboratory findings of a case of Vibrio vulnificus septicaemia are reported. The illness occurred in a previously well 68-year-old man who was accidentally spiked in the buttock by the dorsal spine of a flathead caught in Tamboon Inlet, near Mallacoota, Victoria. The clinical picture of an acute septicaemic illness with shock, associated with metastatic cellulitic lesions on the lower limbs progressing to bulla formation, skin necrosis, necrotising fasciitis and myositis, is characteristic of V. vulnificus septicaemia. It would appear that tetracyclines are the drugs
