Ecological relationship between Aeromonas and Vibrio spp. and planktonic copepods in the coastal marine environment in southern Italy.

The colonisation of planktonic copepod integument by bacteria belonging to the family of Vibrionaceae is a well described phenomenon. In this study, besides reporting on the occurrence of Vibrionaceae and other enteropathogens, we further report on the bacterial attachment to the Estuarine copepod Acartia margalefi in a faecal polluted coastal lagoon near Naples, Southern Italy. In addition, we also performed a laboratory experiment to study the ability of 7 bacterial strains (Vibrio cholerae non-Ol, V. mimicus, V. parahaemolyticus, V. alginolyticus, Aeromonas hydrophila, Escherichia coli and

Bacterial composition of the microbiome of mesopelagic fishes from the Northeast Atlantic.

BACKGROUND: The mesopelagic zone, between 100 and 1000 m depth, contains up to 90% of marine vertebrate biomass. Mesopelagic fishes are key components of these ecosystems through their feeding interactions and play a critical role in the ocean's biological carbon pump through their diel vertical migrations, yet the bacterial communities associated with these fishes remain poorly characterized. Because bioluminescence and light-related interactions are widespread ecological traits in mesopelagic ecosystems, we investigated the bacterial communities associated with the gut, liver, and skin of me

Common lipopolysaccharide specificity: new type of antigen residing in the inner core region of S- and R-form lipopolysaccharides from different families of gram-negative bacteria.

A new antigenic specificity, referred to here as common lipopolysaccharide (LPS) specificity, is described in the LPSs of gram-negative bacteria belonging to various families. The specificity is present in S- and R-form LPS but absent in Re mutants of different enterobacterial genera. By the use of purified LPS and monospecific antibodies obtained by immunoabsorption, the specificity is differentiated from the known core specificities of the genus Salmonella and the lipid A specificity by aid of the passive hemolysis and passive hemolysis inhibition test. In Salmonella minnesota R-form LPS, th

Molar growth yields, respiration and cytochrome patterns of Beneckea natriegens when grown at different medium dissolved-oxygen tensions.

The effect of medium dissolved-oxygen tension on the molar growth yield, respiration and cytochrome content of Beneckea natriegens in chemostat culture (D 0-37 H-1) was examined. The molar growth yield (Y), the specific rate of oxygen (qo2) and glucose consumption, and the specific rate of carbon dioxide evolution were independent of the dissolved-oxygen tension above a critical value (greatest than 2 mmHg). However, the potential respiration rate increased with reduction in the dissolved-oxygen tension at values of the dissolved-oxygen tension well above the critical value. Changes in the cyt

Enteropathogenicity of plesiomonas shigelloides by oral inoculation in adult conditioned rabbits.

To study presumptive diarrhoeagenic and invasive properties of Plesiomonas shigelloides, adult conditioned rabbits (n = 75) were fed 10(10) CFU of 3 isolates (2 from diarrhoea patients and one from river water) of the organism, and one isolate of Shigella sonnei (from a dysentery patient as positive control) or brain-heart infusion broth (as negative control). Each rabbit received in succession i.v. cimetidine (50 mg/kg body weight), two 15 ml oral doses of 5% NaHCO3 at 15 and 30 minutes respectively, prompt bacterial or sham inoculum followed 30 minutes by 2 ml of i.p. tincture of opium. Investigating the composition and distribution of microplastics surface biofilms in coral areas.

In recent years, global climate change and pollution of the marine environment have caused large-scale coral deaths and severe damages to coral reef ecosystems. Numerous studies have shown that coral diseases are closely related to microorganisms. And microplastics (MPs) are a potential threat to corals. In marine ecosystems, MPs are an emerging contaminant. MPs have a strong adsorption effect on pollutants in the water environment, and they are very easily colonized by microorganisms to form biofilms. Biofilms may accumulate many pathogens, increasing the probability of coral disease. However

Vibrio vulnificus infection in Southern Brazil -- case report.

The genus Vibrio is a member of the family Vibrionaceae, and among their disease-causing species, Vibrio vulnificus, a lactose-positive gram-negative bacillus, is one of the most virulent pathogen of the noncholerae vibrios. We describe the case of a 39-year-old male patient, who was using immunosuppressive therapy, admitted to the hospital for liver transplantation. Twelve hours later, the patient presented high fever, myalgia, anuria and erythematous plaques on lower limbs, of rapid growth and proximal progression. The patient was treated with ceftriaxone, meropenem and oxacillin, however he

Refining Salinivibrio pangenome dynamics and biotechnological potential through comparative analysis.

Current understanding of genomic diversity within the halophilic genus Salinivibrio relies predominantly on draft genomes, with only seven complete genomes among the 62 publicly available. Previous pangenome analysis suggested a closed genomic structure while concluding that Salinivibrio lacks polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) degradation capacity despite possessing biosynthesis genes. Here, we present eight complete Salinivibrio genomes from Pearse Lakes (Rottnest Island, Western Australia) generated using Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing, alongside re-analysis of 38 high-quality public genomes

Proctitis and fatal septicemia caused by Plesiomonas shigelloides in a bisexual man.

A case of proctitis and fatal septicemia caused by Plesiomonas shigelloides in a 42-year-old bisexual male is reported. The medical history of the patient was significant for an aortic valve replacement 3 years before but was otherwise unremarkable. A serum specimen obtained at autopsy was negative for antibody to human immunodeficiency virus by Western blot (immunoblot) analysis. P. shigelloides isolated from blood was susceptible to all antibiotics tested, agglutinated in Shigella group D antiserum, possessed a greater than 100-megadalton plasmid, and was noninvasive in a HeLa cell invasion

In vitro and in vivo pathogenicity of Plesiomonas shigelloides.

Epidemiologic evidence suggests that Plesiomonas shigelloides is an enteric pathogen. We conducted in vitro, animal, and volunteer studies on P. shigelloides isolates from patients with diarrhea. Five strains gave a negative keratoconjunctivitis reaction in guinea pigs and did not invade HeLa cells. Genetic probes for heat-stable enterotoxins related to those of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and for gene sequences common to the invasiveness plasmids of Shigella spp. and enteroinvasive E. coli were negative. Heat-labile enterotoxins were not found when a modified GM1-enzyme-linked immunosorb

Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae bacteraemia in a patient with liver cirrhosis.

Photobacterium damselae subsp. damselae is a family of Vibrionaceae and exists in the marine environment. The organism rarely causes soft-tissue infection in humans; moreover, most of the infected individuals have a history of fishing or exposure to brackish water. We experienced the case of a 63-year-old patient with a history of liver cirrhosis (Child-Pugh class B) who presented with a fever and swelling of the left leg with pain. His symptoms developed after fishing and eating raw fish with exposure of brackish water. He was diagnosed with cellulitis, and Photobacterium damselae spp. damsel

Vibrio furnissii, an emerging pathogen causing acute gastroenteritis: a Case Report.

Introduction.Vibrio furnissii is a motile, Gram-negative, oxidase-positive, halophilic bacteria first defined in 1977. It is ubiquitously present in marine environments and is one of the 11 non-cholera Vibrio species pathogenic in humans, which can lead to human gastroenteritis and extra-intestinal manifestations. Case presentation. A 73-year-old female patient was admitted to the hospital with acute gastroenteritis after consumption of seafood, which later by microbiological investigations was confirmed as Vibrio furnissii, a member of the family Vibrionaceae. The patient was treated with ora

Factors affecting the cellular expression of bacterial luciferase.

The in vivo expression of cellular bacterial luciferase has been defined as the luciferase expression quotient, measured as the ratio of the bioluminescence intensity in vivo to the in vitro activity of luciferase in crude cell extracts. The expression is greater in the presence of inhibitors of the electron transport system such as cyanide and N-heptyl-4-hydroxy-quinoline and also at lower oxygen tensions. The higher expression of the cellular luciferase under these conditions is postulated to be due to an increase in the intracellular levels of reduced coenzymes which enhance both the reduct

Evidence for tetradecanal as the natural aldehyde in bacterial bioluminescence.

Dim aldehyde mutants of the luminous bacterium Beneckea harveyi emit light with exogenously added long-chain aliphatic aldehyde. In one class of these mutants, luminescence is also stimulated by myristic (tetradecanoic) acid. In such mutants the amount of light obtained by the addition of a small (limiting) amount of either tetradecanal or myristic acid may be increased 60-fold by cyanide and other agents that block respiration. This indicates that the fatty acid product of the luminescent reaction is recycled. The effect, like the stimulation by exogenous fatty acid, exhibits specificity for

Prevalent chromosome fusion in Vibrio cholerae O1.

Two circular chromosomes are a defining feature of the bacterial family Vibrionaceae, including the pathogen Vibrio cholerae, with rare reports of isolates with a single, fused chromosome. Here, we use long-read sequencing to analyse 467 V. cholerae O1 isolates from 47 cholera patients and household contacts in Bangladesh. We identify several independent chromosome fusion events that are likely transmissible within a household. Fusions occur in a 12 kilobase-pair homologous sequence shared between the two chromosomes and are stable for at least 200 generations under laboratory conditions. We f

Community profiling of the intestinal microbial community of juvenile Hammerhead Sharks (Sphyrna lewini) from the Rewa Delta, Fiji.

Fourteen juvenile scalloped hammerhead sharks (Sphyrna lewini; SHS) were captured between November and December 2014 in the Rewa Delta in Fiji, and assessed for intestinal microflora characterisation using 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing by Illumina Miseq. The microbial population revealed a fluctuating dominance between the Enterobacteriaceae and Vibrionaceae families, namely Citrobacter and Photobacterium spp. Other related marine operational taxonomic units were closely related to Afipia felis, Chloroflexus aggregans, Psychrobacter oceani, Pontibacter actiniarum and Shigella sonnei. Two sharks

Vibrio Infections and the Twenty-First Century.

The Vibrionaceae is a highly diverse family of aquatic bacteria. Some members of this ubiquitous group can cause a variety of diseases in humans ranging from cholera caused by Vibrio cholerae, severe septicemia caused by Vibrio vulnificus, to acute gastroenteritis by Vibrio parahaemolyticus. Planet Earth is experiencing unprecedented changes of planetary scale associated with climate change. These environmental perturbations paired with overpopulation and pollution are increasing the distribution of pathogenic Vibrios and exacerbating the risk of causing infections. In this chapter, we discuss

Identifying macroplastic pathobiomes and antibiotic resistance in a subtropical fish farm.

Macroplastics are ubiquitous in aquaculture ecosystems. However, to date the potential role of plastics as a support for bacterial biofilm that can include potential human pathogenic bacteria (PHPB) and antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) has been largely overlooked. In this study, we used a combination of metabarcoding and standard antibiotic susceptibility testing to study the pathobiome and resistome of macroplastics, fish guts and the environment in a marine aquaculture farm in Mauritius. Aquaculture macroplastics were found to be higher in PHPB, dominated by the Vibrionaceae family (0.34

[Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis associated with Vibrio cholerae non-O1, non-O139 bacteremia].

Vibrio cholerae is a Gram-negative bacilli with curved, comma shape that belongs to the family Vibrionaceae. The antigenic structure consists of a flagellar H antigen and a somatic O antigen (used to classify V cholerae in various serogroups). Serogroups 01 and 0139 have caused epidemics of cholera. Vibrio cholerae non-01 non-139 has been isolated from patients with bacteremia, acute secretory diarrhea, dysentery, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever and cellulitis. Invasive forms such as meningitis, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) and encephalitis are uncommon. Immunosuppression an
