Videolaryngoscopy has consistently shown advantages over direct laryngoscopy for tracheal intubation, yet its role in technically demanding procedures such as double-lumen tube placement has remained less clear. The multicentre DOLVI trial provides robust evidence that videolaryngoscopy improves first-pass success and reduces oesophageal intubation and tube malposition during lung isolation. We place these findings in context, highlight the importance of patient-centred airway outcomes, and consider whether videolaryngoscopy should be the preferred initial approach for double-lumen tube placem

OBJECTIVES: Minimally invasive thoracic procedures have been increasingly used; however, only a small number of lobectomies are performed by videothoracoscopy, showing the need for training on this technique. The objective of this study is to demonstrate the technique of lobectomy using videothoracoscopy in swine, highlighting the steps to be taken during its use in surgical experimentation.
METHODS: During the advanced course on video-assisted and thoracoscopic procedures carried out at IRCAD Latin America, Barretos, Brazil, 40 swine were used for the hands-on course on video-assisted upper

BACKGROUND: The surgical management of primary hyperparathyroidism is changing both in terms of the extent of cervical exploration and in technique. There are many new mini-invasive procedures for neck surgery. We describe our preliminary experience with a technique that combines two mini-invasive procedures--radio-guided and video-assisted parathyroidectomy.
METHODS: Six consecutive patients with no recurrent or persistent primary hyperparathyroidism, no previous cervical operations, and no thyroid pathologies were selected to undergo radio-guided video-assisted parathyroidectomy.
RESULTS:

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has become the standard of care for pleural evaluation, drainage, and pleurodesis. The major limitations to standard VATS techniques include intercostal pain and the unilateral nature of the procedure. We report on a cervical VATS approach for bilateral thoracoscopy, pleural biopsy, and talc pleurodesis using a flexible video endoscope without any intercostal incision. A 64-year old male with peritoneal carcinomatosis was noted to have significant bilateral pleural effusions. A cervical video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (C-VATS) procedure was perf

Thoracoscopic sympathectomy has been used for the treatment of sympathetic dysfunction since it was first described in the 1940s. With the advent of video-assisted thoracic surgery, the procedure has become more widely applied. Video-assisted thoracic surgery allows excellent visual acuity as well as the possibility of doing the procedure more quickly and with fewer complications. This article presents a review of existing approaches and techniques as well as the author's summary and preferences. The review of the articles on thoracoscopic sympathectomy only included those from the English lit

In Video S1, a new surgical technique for hybrid primary tracheoesophageal (TE) puncture in stapler-assisted total laryngectomy is shown. The video describes the surgical steps of the procedure and illustrates some tips and tricks. The procedure incorporates an upper mini-pharyngotomy to enable retrograde placement of the voice prosthesis (VP), eliminating the need for rigid esophagoscopy. This has made it possible to exploit, without additional risks, the potential of the stapler combined with primary TE puncture and VP placement. In our experience, this hybrid procedure in stapler-assisted t

Several minimally invasive procedures have been described over the past 3 years for the treatment of sporadic primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). These techniques (totally endoscopic, video assisted and radio guided) have been demonstrated to be feasible and safe, but the surgeon should be well trained to obtain the best results with these approaches. Not all patients are eligible for minimally invasive procedures. The results are comparable to those of conventional surgery with advantages in terms of cosmetic result and reduced post-operative pain. These procedures should be considered to be

BACKGROUND: With the increasing popularity of video laryngoscopy during intubation of pediatric patients with normal or difficult airways, fiberoptic-assisted tracheal intubation, traditionally considered the gold standard for difficult intubation, may become underused.
AIM: We aimed to assess the use of airway management techniques before and after introduction of video laryngoscopy in a cohort of school-aged children with microtia, who are at increased risk of difficult intubation.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed intubation devices used for all pediatric patients with microtia who had

The progress of laparoscopic techniques have made possible video-assisted miniinvasive surgery in patients with indication of reoperation. Knowing that there are many controversies against this type of surgery, the authors tried to formulate their own point of view in this matter by analyzing their experience in such particular cases. In this study there are included both laparoscopic re-operations (or re-laparoscopies), consecutive to video-assisted surgery, and the mini-invasive procedures performed for complications after open surgery. Of the total 3901 laparoscopic operations (in 3714 pati

Traumatically injured patients often require emergency intubation of their tracheas. Yet, they present distinct airway challenges, such as anatomic deformities, the need for cervical spine immobilization, diminished physiologic reserve, and logistical hurdles like limited equipment or personnel. In this patient population, both videolaryngoscopy and direct laryngoscopy offer distinct advantages and disadvantages, but current evidence remains inconclusive as to which approach is superior. We conducted a systematic review to determine whether videolaryngoscopy offered higher first-pass success r

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The aim of this case series is to evaluate the outcomes and safety of video-assisted mastectomy, illustrating the harmonious collaboration of oncologic and plastic surgery. This novel minimally invasive technique allows immediate prosthetic reconstruction and represents a cost-effective alternative to robotic breast surgery.
METHODS: Video-assisted, single-port nipple-sparing mastectomies were performed in patients with small to medium-sized breasts, followed by immediate direct-to-implant reconstruction with either prepectoral or dual plane implant placement. The patie

Spontaneous pneumothorax remains a significant health problem. However, with time, there have been improvements in pathogenesis, diagnostic procedures and both medical and surgical approaches to treatment. Owing to better imaging techniques, it is now clear that there is almost no normal visceral pleura in the case of spontaneous pneumothorax, and that blebs and bullae are not always the cause of pneumothorax. In first episodes of primary spontaneous pneumothorax, observation and simple aspiration are established first-line therapies, as proven by randomised controlled trials. Aspiration shoul

INTRODUCTION: Pharyngeal tonsil hyperplasia is the most frequent cause of nasal obstruction and chronic mouth breathing during childhood. Adenoidectomy is the procedure of choice for the resolution of these symptoms. It is not yet known, however, whether the conventional technique ("blind curettage") has been surpassed by more modern adenoidectomy techniques (video-assisted, with the aid of instruments). This study aimed to compare the conventional adenoidectomy technique with two other emerging techniques, performed in a reference otorhinolaryngology center.
METHODS: This is a prospective an

INTRODUCTION: Robot-assisted surgery emerged and evolved in order to increase the surgical precision and due to the need to overcome the drawbacks of conventional minimally invasive surgery. In thoracic surgery the first reported use of a robotic device was in a series of 12 patients with different lung pathologies with the assistance of the DaVinci Robotic Surgical System in 2002. The DaVinci system has been used for various procedures in the field of thoracic surgery since then. While its advantages for the resection of early stage thymoma have been well documented, its role in the treatment

Tracheal resection followed by reconstruction is one of the most difficult procedures in thoracic surgery. Intrathoracic tracheal injuries were usually treated by sternotomy, thoracotomy, or a combination of these techniques. In the last decade, minimally invasive surgical techniques have become an innovative trend in the treatment of thoracic tracheal conditions. Recent authors have proven the feasibility and safety of tracheal operations using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). This video tutorial demonstrates our technique for intrathoracic tracheal resection performed by VATS, us

The widespread acceptance of minimal invasive techniques has revolutionized the practice of surgery including, thoracic surgery. Within a short period of time, video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) has become an acceptable approach to a wide range of thoracic procedures. The use of VATS as a diagnostic modality is now well established. For therapeutic procedures, VATS has also been generally accepted as the treatment for spontaneous pneumothorax, thoracic sympathectomy, treatment of loculated effusions and resection of simple mediastinal cysts and benign tumors. Its role in major procedures,
