Proteomic Analysis Revealed that DVL, a Lectin Purified from Dioclea violacea Seeds, Induced a Change in the Protein Profile of Candida albicans.

Candida albicans is an important opportunistic fungal pathogen, and its resistance to conventional treatments poses a substantial challenge. Previous research by our group demonstrated that the anticandidal activity of Dioclea violacea seed lectin (DVL) involves multiple mechanisms of action. Our current objective is to analyze changes in the proteome of C. albicans cells after treatment with the DVL lectin. The proteomic analysis corroborated the previously observed mechanisms with greater specificity, encompassing processes such as cell wall integrity, expression of transport proteins, prote

Exploring Water-Soluble South African Tulbaghia violacea Harv Extract as a Therapeutic Approach for Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Metastasis.

Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) accounts for approximately 20% of all breast cancer cases and is characterized by a lack of estrogen, progesterone, and human epidermal growth factor 2 receptors. Current targeted medicines have been unsuccessful due to this absence of hormone receptors. This study explored the efficacy of Tulbaghia violacea, a South African medicinal plant, for the treatment of TNBC metastasis. Extracts from T. violacea leaves were prepared using water and methanol. However, only the water-soluble extract showed anti-cancer activity and the effects of this water-soluble ex

DVL, lectin from Dioclea violacea seeds, has multiples mechanisms of action against Candida spp via carbohydrate recognition domain.

Lectins are proteins of non-immunological origin with the ability to bind to carbohydrates reversibly. They emerge as an alternative to conventional antifungals, given the ability to interact with carbohydrates in the fungal cell wall inhibiting fungal growth. The lectin from D. violacea (DVL) already has its activity described as anti-candida in some species. Here, we observed the anti-candida effect of DVL on C. albicans, C. krusei and C. parapsilosis and its multiple mechanisms of action toward the yeasts. Additionally, it was observed that DVL induces membrane and cell wall damage and ROS

Lactobacillus apisdorsatae sp. nov. from the giant honeybee (Apis dorsata), Lactobacillus pollinatoris sp. nov. and Lactobacillus xylocopae sp. nov., from the carpenter bee (Xylocopa violacea).

Insects host diverse and distinctive communities of gut mutualistic bacteria, including lactic acid bacteria of the Lactobacillus genus. Recently, most research in the insect microbial taxonomy has focused on identifying novel Lactobacillaceae species in managed insects such as Apis mellifera and few species of Bombus spp. from North America, Europe, and China. However, the gut microbiota of wild insects remains largely unexplored. Yet, insects represent the largest animal class and a vast, untouched source of novel microbial symbionts, especially in wild populations. This study focuses on the

The value of plant extracts with antioxidant activity in attenuating coccidiosis in broiler chickens.

Coccidiosis remains one of the most important diseases in the poultry industry and results in the annual loss of millions of US dollars by the poultry industry. In South Africa and other developing countries where a large percentage of the population is unemployed, cheap food production is necessary. If the control of the coccidian parasite could be made more economical, these savings could be passed on to the consumer. In Europe, where the economics are different, people are becoming more aware of the potential dangers of using antimicrobials in producing animal protein. A solution to both th

Comparative morphology of oral glands in snakes of the family Homalopsidae reveals substantial variation and additional independent origins of salt glands within Serpentes.

Using diffusible iodine-based contrast-enhanced computed tomography (diceCT), we examined the morphology of the oral glands of 12 species of the family Homalopsidae. Snakes of this family exhibit substantial interspecific morphological variation in their oral glands. Particular variables are the venom glands, ranging from large (e.g., Subsessor bocourti) to small (e.g., Erpeton tentaculatum). The supra- and infralabial glands are more uniform in morphology, being the second most developed in almost all the sampled species. Premaxillary glands distinct from the supralabial glands were observed

Application of an Electrochemical Sensor Based on Nitrogen-Doped Biochar Loaded with Ruthenium Oxide for Heavy Metal Detection.

Cotton is a widely cultivated cash crop and represents one of the most significant raw materials for textiles on a global scale. The rapid development of the cotton industry has resulted in the production of substantial amounts of cotton husks, which are frequently underutilized or discarded. This study utilizes agricultural waste, specifically cotton shells, as a precursor for biochar, which is subsequently carbonized and nitrogen-doped with ruthenium oxide to synthesize an innovative composite material known as RuO2-NC. An electrochemical sensor was developed using this composite material to

Field investigations of winter transmission of eastern equine encephalitis virus in Florida.

Studies investigating winter transmission of Eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV) were conducted in Hillsborough County, Florida. The virus was detected in Culiseta melanura and Anopheles quadrimaculatus in February 2012 and 2013, respectively. During the winter months, herons were the most important avian hosts for all mosquito species encountered. In collections carried out in the summer of 2011, blood meals taken from herons were still common, but less frequently encountered than in winter, with an increased frequency of mammalian- and reptile-derived meals observed in the summer. Four
