Research was undertaken to validate the efficacy of a new, nurse-led treatment, the Violence Prevention Community Meeting (VPCM), for reducing patient violence on an acute-care inpatient psychiatry unit. Nursing staff members carried event counters and recorded verbal and physical violence as it occurred over the 20-week study. Significant decreases in patient violence were found across day, evening, and night shifts for pre-treatment vs. treatment and pre-treatment vs. post-treatment comparisons. For the day shift, when twice-weekly VPCM treatment took place, violent incidents decreased 89% f

This qualitative study examined female domestic violence offenders via structured interviews with 13 women referred for treatment in batterers' intervention programs in a major metropolitan area. The majority of women were victims of childhood abuse and/or witnessed violence between their parents. Most reported feeling cut-off from their mothers, left their childhood homes before the age of 18, and experienced violence at the hands of a prior partner. Women's motivations for current violence were primarily in self-defense or in retaliation for their partners' physical abuse, and secondarily in

BACKGROUND: Child-to-parent violence (CPV) is a serious but under-researched form of family violence. There is a lack of previous studies examining whether school violence and exposure to parental violence interact in their association with CPV. We hypothesize that involvement in school violence - as victim or perpetrator - is more strongly associated with physical CPV among individuals who have been exposed to parental violence.
METHODS: Data are drawn from a large cross-sectional study conducted in 35 schools in southern Sweden. The sample comprises 5,052 adolescents (46.7% male; Mage = 16.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) refers to abuse (eg, physical, financial, emotional, sexual, contraceptive, reproductive abuse; stalking; coercion) perpetrated by an individual with whom a patient has, or previously had, a personal and/or sexual relationship. IPV is a global public health concern that affects individuals in all categories of socioeconomic status, sex, age, race/ethnicity, and sexual orientation. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends screening for IPV in all women of childbearing age. Additional red flag signs and symptoms may signal that further investigation is n

The purpose of this research is to investigate peer-to-peer sexual violence victimization and perpetration among male and female adolescents in a large, racially and economically diverse, community-based sample. Using cross-sectional data over a four-year period (2009-2013) from a regional sample of middle school and high school students in southeastern Michigan, we examined the prevalence and correlates of peer-to-peer sexual violence victimization and perpetration among adolescents. 33.9% of males and 53.5% of females reported sexual violence victimization, while 22.8% of males and 12.6% of

The objective of this study was to determine if a brief screen for domestic violence (DV) predicts future violence. We conducted a cohort study of adult women who presented to an inner-city emergency department during an 8-week study period. Participants were screened for DV using the Partner Violence Screen (PVS). At 4 months, follow-up telephone interviews were conducted: rates of verbal and physical violence were measured using the modified Conflict Tactics Scale. Relative risks of violent events (physical and verbal) were calculated. Of the 215 women who enrolled, 36 (16%) had an initial s

Over the past two decades, "obstetric violence" has become a central concept in research, policy and law on reproductive health care. Debate has focused almost entirely on whether "violence" is the appropriate word, while "obstetric" has gone largely unexamined. This article argues that "violence" is justified, but that "obstetric violence" is conceptually insufficient: it confines the phenomenon to the moment of birth, frames as relational what is structural and institutional, and names one clinical specialty within a field of care that involves several. The field uses at least four overlappi

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to better understand the experience of coercive control as a type of IPV by examining associations between coercive control and women's experiences of particular forms of violence, use of violence, and risk of future violence.
METHOD: As part of a larger research study, data were collected from 553 women patients at two hospital emergency departments who had experienced recent IPV and unhealthy drinking. Baseline assessments, including measures of coercive control, danger, and experience and use of psychological, physical, and sexual forms of IPV in

OBJECTIVE: To examine the prevalence of dual violence-experience of obstetric violence (OV) and postpartum intimate partner violence (IPV)-and factors associated with it among women in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
METHODS: As part of a broader longitudinal study, we surveyed 354 postpartum women six to sixteen weeks after childbirth. OV was assessed across seven domains (e.g., verbal abuse, non-consented care, lack of privacy), and IPV across three (physical, sexual, emotional). Dual violence was defined as experiencing at least one form of both OV and IPV. We used logistic regression to identify f

This study examines the relationship between community violence and obstetric violence in Mexico, where the so-called "War on Drugs" has led to sustained high levels of homicides and one-third of pregnant people report experiencing abusive treatment from healthcare providers during childbirth. We combine unique nationally representative survey data on experiences of obstetric violence for births that occurred between 2016 and 2021 with administrative homicide data at the month-municipality level. Using fixed effects models, we investigate how different manifestations of obstetric violence rela

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationships among different forms of violence before and during pregnancy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: An anonymous questionnaire (adapted NorAQ) was given to 1269 women after childbirth.
RESULTS: The response rate was 80% (n=1018). Different forms of violence were experienced by 46.9% of the women; 9.2% reported violence in pregnancy. Suffering from the consequences of violence was reported by 43.8% of the women; sexual (76.6%) and psychological (54.1%) ranked the highest. Past experience of any form of violence increased the risk of violence in pregnancy, violence

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether male victims of domestic violence have similar rates of violence perpetration compared with men evaluated in the ED with other causes of injury.
METHODS: Case-control retrospective ED record review with linkage to police department records. Cases were identified by ICD code N-code 995.81 (adult maltreatment syndrome) over a 4-year period (January 1, 1991, to December 31, 1994) at one urban trauma center. Medical records were reviewed to confirm that the assailant was an intimate female partner. Controls were identified by E-codes 880-888 (unintentional falls) a

Although generally considered as mutually exclusive, violence and sleep can coexist. Violence related to the sleep period is probably more frequent than generally assumed and can be observed in various conditions including parasomnias (such as arousal disorders and rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder), epilepsy (in particular nocturnal frontal lobe epilepsy) and psychiatric diseases (including delirium and dissociative states). Important advances in the fields of genetics, neuroimaging and behavioural neurology have expanded the understanding of the mechanisms underlying violence and i

The aggressions suffered by healthcare personnel (HCP) is a growing problem in the field of public health in Spain that negatively affects the quality of care. The objective is to analyze the causes of the aggressions towards the HCP and what implications they have for the healthcare service and its personnel. The methodology is based on a systematic review in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Medes. The triggers of the aggressions are multifactorial and can lead to post-traumatic stress disorder in the HCP. The most affected services are primary care, emergency care, emergencies, and psychia

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the joint effect of child abuse and neglect (CAN) and community violence (CV) on adolescents with peers that commit youth violence (YV).
METHODS: This is a school-based cross-sectional study of 699 students enrolled in four public and nine private schools in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Participants were selected through a complex cluster sampling procedure. CAN was identified using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Exposure to CV was assessed by asking students if they have witnessed cases of lethal violence in the community. YV was measured i

UNLABELLED: IntroductionEach year, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) personnel respond to over 30 million calls for assistance in the United States alone. These EMS personnel have a rate of occupational fatality comparable to firefighters and police, and a rate of non-fatal injuries that is higher than the rates for police and firefighters and much higher than the national average for all workers. In Australia, no occupational group has a higher injury or fatality rate than EMS personnel. Emergency Medical Services personnel in the US have a rate of occupational violence injuries that is about

This paper is a sequel to Avakame (1998), a study which sought to determine whether (a) violence in families of origin affects males' psychological aggression toward wives, and (b) whether the intergenerational transmission effect is solely direct or mediated by Gottfredson and Hirschi's concept of self-control. The current research extends these questions to females' psychological aggression as well as males' and females' physical violence. The models were estimated using data from the 1975 National Family Violence Survey. Like its precursor, results of the present research suggest that it is

Most violence connected with sleep disorder is assumed to be related to sleep walking. It is less well known that other sleep disorders can also give rise to violence. The role of narcolepsy in car accidents is mentioned. Sleep drunkenness can lead to confusion resulting in violent behaviour especially on forced awakening. This condition is associated to sleep apnea. Primary or central sleep apnea is caused by disorders of the brain stem affecting the respiratory center. Secondary or upper airway sleep apnea can be caused by virtually any condition that results in cessation of the air flow due
