Envenomation by the horned viper (Vipera ammodytes L.).

Snake venom poisoning is a medical emergency that requires urgent therapeutic procedures. The treatment of venomous snakebites is still controversial because of unclear therapeutic modalities. Choice of treatment is dictated in part by regional characteristics with regard to patient population and types of venomous snakes. The purpose of the study presented here was to report regional experience with venomous snakebites and to describe first-aid, pre-hospital, and hospital therapeutic procedures for horned viper bite. During a 16-year period, from 1980 to 1996, at the Clinical Hospital Split (

Phosphodiesterase from Vipera lebetina venom - structure and characterization.

Nucleases and phosphatases are ubiquitous but mostly marginal components of snake venoms. These proteins have been studied quite extensively but up to now no data regarding their amino acid sequences confirmed at protein level have been published. The present study deals with purification, characterization, and structural properties of a phosphodiesterase from Vipera lebetina venom (VLPDE). The VLPDE with molecular mass of about 120 kDa hydrolyses ADP but not ATP and 5'-AMP. The aggregation of platelets induced by ADP or collagen is dose-dependently inhibited by VLPDE. The cloning and sequenci

Fatal Vipera xanthina palestinae envenomation in 16 dogs.

Sixteen fatal dog envenomations by the snake Vipera palaestinae over a 14-y period are described. Most envenomations occurred during the late night hours in the warm months, and 8/16 dogs were bitten on the limbs. The most frequent clinical signs upon admission were soft tissue swelling and edema, local pain, depression, bleeding, lameness, dyspnea, and 6 dogs were in shock. Thrombocytopenia was present in 14/16 cases and increased hematocrit (13/16) and hemoglobin (9/16) concentration were the most common hematological abnormalities upon admission. Biochemical abnormalities included increased

A Guide to the Clinical Management of Vipera Snakebite in Italy.

The genus Vipera encompasses most species of medically significant venomous snakes of Europe, with Italy harbouring four of them. Envenomation by European vipers can result in severe consequences, but underreporting and the absence of standardised clinical protocols hinder effective snakebite management. This study provides an updated, detailed set of guidelines for the management and treatment of Vipera snakebite tailored for Italian clinicians. It includes taxonomic keys for snake identification, insights into viper venom composition, and recommendations for clinical management. Emphasis is

Cold hardiness in the boreal adder, Vipera berus.

In three freezing experiments we examined the freeze tolerance in newborn adders, Vipera berus, from East-central Sweden. After a two to three hours exposure to freezing, ten out of eleven fast frozen snakes survived and recovered completely after being exposed to -3.1 degrees C on average. In the other two experiments with fast and slow freezing followed by long exposures lasting for 22-30 hours, none of the snakes survived average exposures at -4.8 degrees C or -3.8 degrees C, respectively. The glucose content of blood from frozen snakes was significantly higher than in unfrozen ones. The in

Interactions of PLA2-s from Vipera lebetina, Vipera berus berus and Naja naja oxiana venom with platelets, bacterial and cancer cells.

Secretory phospholipasesA(2) (sPLA(2)s) form a large family of structurally related enzymes widespread in nature. Herein, we studied the inhibitory effects of sPLA(2)s from Vipera lebetina (VLPLA(2)), Vipera berus berus (VBBPLA(2)), and Naja naja oxiana (NNOPLA(2)) venoms on (i) human platelets, (ii) four different bacterial strains (gram-negative Escherichia coli and Vibrio fischeri; gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) and (iii) five types of cancer cells (PC-3, LNCaP, MCF-7, K-562 and B16-F10) in vitro. sPLA(2)s inhibited collagen-induced platelet aggregation: VBBPLA(2

Antivenomic and Proteomic Assessment of Inter- and Intrapopulation Venom Variations in Nikolsky's Adder Vipera nikolskii: Comparison to Common Adder Vipera berus.

Snake venom variation has important clinical implications, yet individual-level venomics remains limited. We investigated inter- and intrapopulation variability in forest-steppe adder Vipera nikolskii and its recognition by commercial V. berus antivenom using proteomic and immunological approaches. Venoms from 12 individual V. nikolskii specimens representing two geographically distinct populations (BG and KM), together with three pooled V. nikolskii and one pooled V. berus samples were analyzed by LC-MS/MS, ELISA, Western blot, and pull-down assays. Multivariate analysis revealed relative hom

Protein C activity in dogs envenomed by Vipera palaestinae.

Vipera palaestinae is responsible for most envenomations in humans and domestic animal in Israel. Its venom has pro- and anticoagulant properties. Protein C is a major natural anticoagulant, preventing excess clotting and thrombosis. This study investigated protein C activity and its prognostic value, as well as several other hemostatic analytes in dogs (Canis familiaris) accidently envenomed by V. palaestinae. Protein C activity was compared between envenomed dogs and 33 healthy control dogs. Mean protein C was lower in dogs envenomed by V. palaestinae compared to controls (12.9% vs. 22.9%, r

[Envenoming by common viper (Vipera berus)--subject still exists...].

The only venomous reptile that naturally occurs in Poland is the adder or common viper (Vipera berus). Its bites are not of great epidemiological importance, but in some cases serious life-threatening symptoms may appear. The most common symptoms of adder envenomation are: local edema, reddening and pain of the bitten site and also the general symptoms coming from the alimentary tract (vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain), the circulatory system (hypotension, shock, ECG abnormalities), the central nervous system (sleepiness, vertigo, disorientation, loss of consciousness), hematological sympto

Vipera snakebite in Europe: a systematic review of a neglected disease.

In 2009, snakebites were included in the list of the World Health Organization (WHO) neglected diseases. Dermatological literature lacks current and up-to-date articles about snakebites and their management, despite the fact that dermatologists, especially from rural hospitals, can be called into the emergency room to consult the management of suspected snakebites. In this systematic review, we highlighted the main clinical and laboratory aspects of snakebites from Vipera spp. in Europe, by reviewing 3574 studies initially retrieved from PubMed, Embase and Cochrane CENTRAL databases. Of these,

[First aid and treatment of bites by snakes of the genus Vipera].

The amount of injected snake venom, the seriousness of the poisoning, the local and general clinical manifestations are influenced by several causes, which are analysed here. The most recent discoveries suggest the tight binding the bitten limb, extending the bandages as high as possible and applying a splint to the limb, in the first aid. The main steps of treatment, the laboratory tests, which may help the physician to follow the course of the poisoning, are then reported.

Venomics of the asp viper Vipera aspis aspis from France.

The asp viper Vipera aspis aspis is a venomous snake found in France, and despite its medical importance, the complete toxin repertoire produced is unknown. Here, we used a venomics approach to decipher the composition of its venom. Transcriptomic analysis revealed 80 venom-annotated sequences grouped into 16 gene families. Among the most represented toxins were snake venom metalloproteases (23%), phospholipases A2 (15%), serine proteases (13%), snake venom metalloprotease inhibitors (13%) and C-type lectins (12%). LC-MS of venoms revealed similar profiles regardless of the method of extractio

Proximal lower limb vein thrombosis following vipera berus hand bite.

Vipera berus has a wide geographical distribution throughout Central and Northern Europe. The symptoms after a bite usually are mild, life threatening symptoms are mainly described in children. We describe a case of popliteal vein thrombosis of the right leg after systemic envenoming with Vipera berus venom after a bite in the right hand by a female Vipera berus in the alpine region of Styria, Austria. Changes of the plasmatic coagulation system were obvious in our patient. These changes were due to an activation of the coagulation system and might be the reason for the thrombotic event in thi

Vipera lebetina venom contains all types of snake venom metalloproteases.

Snake venoms contain four classes of metalloproteases that all have a typical zinc-chelating sequence (HEXXHGXXH). N-terminal sequences and internal sequences of different purified metalloproteases were determined using Edman sequencing and LC MS/MS technique. Oligonucleotides were designed and used as primers for cDNA cloning from Vipera lebetina venom gland cDNA library. We found that isoforms of fibrinolytic enzyme lebetase Le-4 and Le-3 are synthesized in different way: Le-4 is synthesized as P-I type metalloprotease, Le-3 is synthesized with disintegrin-like domain as P-II type protease a

Second-degree heart block associated with envenomation by Vipera berus.

Evenomation by the common European adder (Vipera berus) is well known for its significant morbidity but low mortality. Cardiac complications tend to take second place to the systemic upset and usually only comprise non-specific ECG changes. This case illustrates many of the classical features of adder bite but it is also the first account of heart block as a complication.
