Reproductive cycles of two island pitvipers species (Serpentes, Viperidae) determined by ultrasonography and radiography.

We used ultrasonography and radiography to assess the sexual organs and characterize the reproductive cycle of captive golden lancehead (Bothrops insularis) and Alcatrazes lancehead (B. alcatraz), two endangered island snake species in Brazil. We assessed 46- individuals of golden lancehead and 12 of Alcatrazes lancehead kept in captivity between 2014 and 2020. Follicular development was similar between species, but follicles in Alcatrazes lancehead were smaller than in the golden lanceheads. Female golden lanceheads produced 24 live young, seven stillborn and 73 undeveloped eggs. Parturition

Vertebral morphology and intracolumnar variation of the iconic African viperid snake Atheris (Serpentes, Viperidae).

We here provide a detailed description of the vertebral morphology of the African arboreal viperid snakes of the genus Atheris. Vertebrae of three different species of the genus, i.e., Atheris desaixi, Atheris hispida, and Atheris katangensis, were investigated via the aid of μCT (micro-computed tomography) scanning. We describe several vertebrae from different regions of the vertebral column for all three species, starting from the atlas-axis complex to the caudal tip, in order to demonstrate important differences regarding the intracolumnar variation. Comparison of these three species shows

Crystal structure of the complex between venom toxin and serum inhibitor from Viperidae snake.

Venomous snakes have endogenous proteins that neutralize the toxicity of their venom components. We previously identified five small serum proteins (SSP-1-SSP-5) from a highly venomous snake belonging to the family Viperidae as inhibitors of various toxins from snake venom. The endogenous inhibitors belong to the prostate secretory protein of 94 amino acids (PSP94) family. SSP-2 interacts with triflin, which is a member of the cysteine-rich secretory protein (CRISP) family that blocks smooth muscle contraction. However, the structural basis for the interaction and the biological roles of these

Potential Utilization of a Polysaccharide from the Marine Algae Gayralia oxysperma, as an Antivenom for Viperidae Snakebites.

Worldwide, snakebites have serious implications for human health. The administration of antivenom is the official treatment used to reverse the toxic activities of envenomation. However, this therapy is not efficient to treat the local effects, leading to the amputation or deformity of affected limbs. As such, alternative treatments are needed. Here, we analyze the ability of a polysaccharide from the green marine alga Gayralia oxysperma (Go3) to inhibit the effects of venom from Bothrops jararaca and Lachesis muta. B. jararaca or L. muta venoms were incubated together with sulfated heterorham

Morphophysiological dynamics of the proximal post-testicular ducts in Crotalus durissus Linnaeus, 1758 (Squamata: Viperidae).

The organization and function of reptilian excurrent ducts remain poorly characterized, particularly in Neotropical snakes. We provide the first integrative morphological, histochemical, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural analysis of the proximal post-testicular ducts of Crotalus durissus across reproductive stages. Using light, transmission electron, and confocal laser microscopy, we examined the rete testis, ductuli efferentes, ductuli epididymides, and ductus epididymis of adult males. The proximal post-testicular ducts are contained within the epididymal sheath alongside the adrenal

Nanofractionation Analytics for Comparing MALDI-MS and ESI-MS Data of Viperidae Snake Venom Toxins.

Worldwide, it is estimated that there are 1.8 to 2.7 million cases of envenoming caused by snakebites. Snake venom is a complex mixture of protein toxins, lipids, small molecules, and salts, with the proteins typically responsible for causing pathology in snakebite victims. For their chemical characterization and identification, analytical methods are required. Reversed-phase liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (RP-LC-ESI-MS) is a widely used technique due to its ease of use, sensitivity, and ability to be directly coupled after LC separation. This meth

Electrophysiological modulation of cholinergic neurotransmission by biologically active peptides from Bothrops bilineatus (Viperidae: Crotalinae) venom.

The venom of Bothrops bilineatus, an Amazonian arboreal viper, induces neurotoxicity in mammalian nerve-muscle preparations that is characterized by initial neuromuscular facilitation followed by irreversible blockade. Up until now, the toxins responsible for the neuromuscular excitatory action of this venom have remained unidentified. In this study, we characterized two presynaptically active peptides from B. bilineatus venom using mass spectrometry and electrophysiological analysis at the neuromuscular junction. Fractionation by size-exclusion chromatography yielded eight fractions, with fra

Composition characterization of various viperidae snake venoms using MS-based proteomics N-glycoproteomics and N-glycomics.

Viperidae snake species is widely abundant and responsible for most envenomation cases in Turkey. The structural and compositional profiles of snake venom have been investigated to study the venom component variation across different species and to profile the venom biological activity variation against prey. In this context, we used proteomics, glycoproteomics and glycomics strategies to characterize the protein, glycoproteins and glycan structural and compositional profiles of various snake venoms in the Viperidae family. Moreover, we compared these profiles using the downstream bioinformati

Structural, biochemical and immunochemical characterization of an acidic phospholipase A2 from Lachesis acrochorda (Viperidae: Crotalinae) venom.

Viperids of the genus Lachesis, also known as bushmasters, are capable of injecting great amounts of venom that cause severe envenomation incidents. Since phospholipases type A2 are mainly involved in edema and myonecrosis within the snakebite sites, in this work, the isolation, amino acid sequence and biochemical characterization of the first phospholipase type A2 from the venom of Lachesis acrochorda, named Lacro_PLA2, is described. Lacro_PLA2 is an acidic aspartic 49 calcium-dependent phospholipase A2 with 93% similarity to the L. stenophrys phospholipase. Lacro_PLA2 has a molecular mass of

First Case Report of an Unusual Echis genus (Squamata: Ophidia: Viperidae) Body Pattern Design in Iran.

Three families of venomous snakes exist in Iran including Viperidae, Elapidae, and Hydrophidae. Viperidae family is the only family with a widespread distribution. Saw-scaled vipers are important poisonous snakes in Asia and Africa. This name is given to this snake due to the presence of obliquely keeled and serrated lateral body scales. Distribution of this genera is mostly reported in the central and southern regions of Iran. This genus has four main clades: the Echis carinatus, E. coloratus, E. ocellatus, and E. pyramidum. Design pattern in Echis species plays an important role in camouflag

Comparative in-vivo toxicity of venoms from South Asian hump-nosed pit vipers (Viperidae: Crotalinae: Hypnale).

BACKGROUND: Envenoming by south Asian hump-nosed pit vipers (Genus: Hypnale) is a significant health issue in Sri Lanka and in peninsular India. Bites by these snakes frequently lead to local envenoming, coagulopathy and acute renal failure even resulting in death. Recently the genus was revised and the existence of three species viz H. hypnale, H. nepa and H. zara were recognized. There is, however, a paucity of information on the toxicity of the venoms of these species. Hence, we compared the toxic effects of the three Hypnale venoms using BALB/c mice. FINDINGS: Intraperitoneal median letha

Phospholipase A2 inhibitors (βPLIs) are encoded in the venom glands of Lachesis muta (Crotalinae, Viperidae) snakes.

Phospholipase A(2) inhibitors (PLIs) are glycoproteins secreted by snake liver into the circulating blood aiming the self-protection against toxic venom phospholipases A(2). In the present study, we describe the first complete nucleotide sequence of a βPLI from venom glands of a New World snake, Lachesis muta. The deduced primary structure was compared to other known βPLIs and recent literature findings of other possible roles of PLIs in snakes are discussed.

Comparative characterization of Viperidae snake venoms from Perú reveals two compositional patterns of phospholipase A2 expression.

Snake species within the Bothrops complex (sensu lato) are of medical relevance in Latin America, but knowledge on their venom characteristics is limited, or even unavailable, for some taxa. Perú harbors 17 species of pit vipers, within the genera Bothrops, Bothriechis, Bothrocophias, Porthidium, Crotalus, and Lachesis. This study compared the venoms of twelve species, through chromatographic and electrophoretic profiles, as well as proteolytic and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) activities. Also, proteomic profiles were analyzed for nine of the venoms using a shotgun approach. Results unveiled conspi
