Effects of Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality on Induced Anxiety.

To explore the effects of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) in the treatment of claustrophobia, the potential effects of VR and AR on induced anxiety were investigated in this paper. During the experiment, 34 subjects were randomly selected and distributed in AR and VR scenes in a sequence. The skin conductance and heart rates of the subjects were measured throughout the entire process, and the anxiety scale was used to assess the subjective anxiety when the task in each scene was completed. The results showed the following: (1) AR and VR scenes led to feelings of discomfort, but

[Virtual Reality in psychiatry and psychotherapy].

The use of virtual reality (VR) technology in psychiatry and psychotherapy has spread continiously over the last two decades. Researches has mainly focused on the VR-based therapy of anxiety disorders, but encouraging results have also been published in the field of diagnosis and therapy of eating disorders, addictions, autism, and ADHD. There have been fewer reports on the therapy of schizophrenia yet. In these cases VR interventions cover a wide range of symptoms. VR based interventions have already been developed for cognitive and social abilities that are more difficult to alleviate by med

Comparison of Experimental Pain Modulation by Hypnosis, Virtual Reality and Virtual Reality Hypnosis in Healthy Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Hypnosis (H) and virtual reality (VR) are effective behavioural interventions to influence acute pain perception. Hypnotic suggestions have also been shown to modulate the nociceptive flexion reflex (NFR), suggesting the activation of descending modulatory mechanisms affecting spinal nociceptive activity. The combination of these techniques, virtual reality hypnosis (VRH), may reduce pain, but research on their comparative efficacy and mechanisms requires further experimental investigation. This study compared the effects of relaxation hypnosis, VR and VRH on pain perception and no

A virtual reality scenario for all seasons: the virtual classroom.

Treatment and rehabilitation of the cognitive, psychological, and motor sequelae of central nervous system dysfunction often relies on assessment instruments to inform diagnosis and to track changes in clinical status. Typically, these assessments employ paper-and-pencil psychometrics, hands-on analog/computer tests, and rating of behavior within the context of real-world functional environments. Virtual reality offers the option to produce and distribute identical "standard" simulation environments in which performance can be measured and rehabilitated. Within such digital scenarios, normativ

When virtual reality becomes psychoneuroendocrine reality: A stress(or) review.

This review article was awarded the Dirk Hellhammer award from ISPNE in 2023. It explores the dynamic relationship between stressors and stress from a historical view as well as a vision towards the future of stress research via virtual reality (VR). We introduce the concept of a "syncytium," a permeable boundary that blurs the distinction between stress and stressor, in order to understand why the field of stress biology continues to inadequately measure stress alone as a proxy for the force of external stressors. Using Virtual Reality (VR) as an illustrative example to explicate the black bo

Virtual reality in musculoskeletal pain management.

Over the past years, virtual reality has emerged as an increasingly popular treatment option for both acute and chronic musculoskeletal pain. This special report explores what virtual reality entails, its potential working mechanisms, and the current state of evidence, before outlining directions for future research. The defining feature of virtual reality is its ability to immerse users in a three-dimensional, computer-simulated environment, typically via a headset, where they can interact using body movements and handheld controllers or other devices. For musculoskeletal pain, virtual realit

Virtual Reality Therapy in Mental Health.

Initially designed for the treatment of phobias, the use of virtual reality in phobic disorders has expanded to other mental health disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder, substance-related disorders, eating disorders, psychosis, and autism spectrum disorder. The goal of this review is to provide an accessible understanding of why this approach is important for future practice, given its potential to provide clinically relevant information associated with the assessment and treatment of people suffering from mental illness. Most of the evidence is available for the use of virtual real

Neurological injury from virtual reality mishap.

Consumer virtual reality systems are becoming increasingly popular with the increasing availability of devices and gamified technologies. Self-sustained injury risks exist with the use of this technology in the uncontrolled home environment, however, the public awareness of these risks may not be recognised. We present a case of a low- impact virtual reality fall resulting in spinal cord injury, hypoglossal nerve injury, vertebral artery dissection and traumatic brain injury.

[Virtual reality therapy in anxiety disorders].

During the last decade a number of studies have been conducted in order to examine if virtual reality exposure therapy can be an alternative form of therapy for the treatment of mental disorders and particularly for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Imaginal exposure therapy, which is one of the components of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, cannot be easily applied to all patients and in cases like those virtual reality can be used as an alternative or a supportive psychotherapeutic technique. Most studies using virtual reality have focused on anxiety disorders, mainly in specific phobias, but

Cognitive mechanisms underlying virtual reality exposure.

Many studies have assessed virtual reality exposures efficacy, but very few examined its treatment processes. The addition of objective measures of arousal and information processing mechanisms would be a valuable contribution in order to provide a more complete and detailed picture. The goal of this study was to better document the cognitive mechanisms associated with therapeutic change after an in virtuo exposure treatment. Twenty-eight adults suffering from arachnophobia were assessed and received an exposure-based treatment using virtual reality. General outcome and specific processes meas

Virtual reality treatment of flying phobia.

Flying phobia (FP) might become a very incapacitating and disturbing problem in a person's social, working, and private areas. Psychological interventions based on exposure therapy have proved to be effective, but given the particular nature of this disorder they bear important limitations. Exposure therapy for FP might be excessively costly in terms of time, money, and efforts. Virtual reality (VR) overcomes these difficulties as different significant environments might be created, where the patient can interact with what he or she fears while in a totally safe and protected environment-the t

[Virtual reality and digital shoulder surgery].

Digital technologies are increasingly expanding the scope of shoulder surgery. In shoulder arthroplasty, CT-based three-dimensional (3D-) planning has become established for assessing glenoid morphology, selecting implants, and virtually positioning components. Patient-specific instrumentation (PSI) and computer-assisted navigation aim to translate preoperative planning into the operating room with greater precision. Virtual reality (VR) currently plays its most relevant role in shoulder surgical education and simulation. Augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR) may enable intraoperative

Virtual reality techniques for trauma education.

In this article we discuss the evolution of computers and the use of VR for trauma education. We reflect on available literature and share the lessons we learned. VR allows you to share your most interesting and rare patient cases with a bedside teaching experience. Since there are more and different possibilities with VR we recommend a new design of teaching. In our experience, creativity is needed to deviate from the conventional educational paths. Remember that VR technique alone cannot compensate for bad content. When designing your VR script, do not underestimate the digital insight of th
