Physical and computer modelling of blood flow in a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt.

UNLABELLED: The aim of this work was the application of computer and physical in vitro simulation methods for estimating surgery procedure hemodynamics. The modified Blalock-Taussig (mB-T) palliative surgical procedure is performed to increase the pulmonary blood flow in children with congenital heart defects. Such a systemic-to-pulmonary shunt yields substantial modification in the blood flow within the large blood vessels. The objective of the present study was to investigate basic characteristics of the flow, flow pattern and pressure-flow efficiency, before and after opening of the mB-T gr

The United States military's thigh trauma simulator.

Computer-generated virtual environments bring the potential to practice complex mental and physical tasks in safe and controlled conditions. When applied to medical procedures, they could allow students to gain experience with a wide variety of cases, in optimal order, and with no patient risk. The United States military is funding the development of a virtual environment to present a variety of health care providers, including orthopaedic surgeons, with case scenarios based on thigh trauma resulting in femur fractures. Data from the Visible Human project are being used to create the underlyin

Development of an interactive anatomical three-dimensional eye model.

The discrete anatomy of the eye's intricate oculomotor system is conceptually difficult for novice students to grasp. This is problematic given that this group of muscles represents one of the most common sites of clinical intervention in the treatment of ocular motility disorders and other eye disorders. This project was designed to develop a digital, interactive, three-dimensional (3D) model of the muscles and cranial nerves of the oculomotor system. Development of the 3D model utilized data from the Visible Human Project (VHP) dataset that was refined using multiple forms of 3D software. Th

A three-dimensional atlas of human tongue muscles.

The human tongue is one of the most important yet least understood structures of the body. One reason for the relative lack of research on the human tongue is its complex anatomy. This is a real barrier to investigators as there are few anatomical resources in the literature that show this complex anatomy clearly. As a result, the diagnosis and treatment of tongue disorders lags behind that for other structures of the head and neck. This report intended to fill this gap by displaying the tongue's anatomy in multiple ways. The primary material used in this study was serial axial images of the m

Anatomical frame identification and reconstruction for repeatable lower limb joint kinematics estimates.

The quantitative description of joint mechanics during movement requires the reconstruction of the position and orientation of selected anatomical axes with respect to a laboratory reference frame. These anatomical axes are identified through an ad hoc anatomical calibration procedure and their position and orientation are reconstructed relative to bone-embedded frames normally derived from photogrammetric marker positions and used to describe movement. The repeatability of anatomical calibration, both within and between subjects, is crucial for kinematic and kinetic end results. This paper il

A schlieren optical study of the human cough with and without wearing masks for aerosol infection control.

Various infectious agents are known to be transmitted naturally via respiratory aerosols produced by infected patients. Such aerosols may be produced during normal activities by breathing, talking, coughing and sneezing. The schlieren optical method, previously applied mostly in engineering and physics, can be effectively used here to visualize airflows around human subjects in such indoor situations, non-intrusively and without the need for either tracer gas or airborne particles. It accomplishes this by rendering visible the optical phase gradients owing to real-time changes in air temperatu

Atomic force microscopy study on chlorpromazine-induced morphological changes of living HeLa cells In Vitro.

Chlorpromazine (CPZ)-induced morphological changes of living human cervical carcinoma cells were investigated by atomic force microscopy in near physiological condition. The results showed that the cell morphology changed visibly with time in the presence of CPZ (>21 microM). The cell membrane shrank gradually and detached finally from the substrate. After being treated with CPZ for 50 min, the cell volume increased by about 27.6% while its projective area (cell adhered to the substrate) decreased by about 12%. The mechanism was also discussed.

Humanizing care in the ICU: Implementation insights from the Footprints Project.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: The Footprints Project is a humanizing initiative that elicits and displays personal information from patients and families about a patient's life before illness. Key details recorded on a form are then written on a whiteboard in the patient's room to support person-centered care. The whiteboard keeps personal identity, preferences, and daily plans visible. The objective of this study was to explore how the Footprints Project evolved over time and to identify contextual determinants and practical strategies that may support its ongoing sustainability from the perspecti

Ciliary body imaging with transpalpebral near-infrared transillumination – a pilot study.

Background: Near-infrared light is known to pass through human tissues better than visible light. With invisible infrared light, the eye can be illuminated not only through the cornea or the sclera, but also through the eyelid, which can be beneficial in some cases. Purpose: To determine possible use of near-infrared radiation in visualizing ciliary body structures by transpalpebral transillumination. Material and methods: The study cohort included 15 people (30 eyes) with no visible lesions of the anterior segment of the eye; 20 patients (20 eyes) with absolute glaucoma before the laser trans

Computational representation of a realistic head and brain volume conductor model: electroencephalography simulation and visualization study.

Computational head and brain volume conductor modeling is a practical and non-invasive method to investigate neuroelectrical activity in the brain. Anatomical structures included in a model affect the flow of volume currents and the resulting scalp surface potentials. The influence of different tissues within the head on scalp surface potentials was investigated by constructing five highly detailed, realistic head models from segmented and processed Visible Human Man digital images. The models were: (1) model with 20 different tissues, that is, skin, dense connective tissue (fat), aponeurosis

Automatic upstaging of tongue squamous cell carcinoma with lateral extrinsic muscle involvement is not justified.

The TNM classification for oral malignancies has been criticized for its upstaging to T4a when tumour involves styloglossus, hyoglossus, palatoglossus and genioglossus. The aims of this study were to (1) create an anatomical computer atlas of extrinsic tongue musculature, and (2) reassess the original staging of pre-treatment archived magnetic resonance images (MRI) of tongue carcinomas using the strict extrinsic muscle criteria. The anatomy of the extrinsic tongue muscles was mapped using images from the Visible Human Project (VHP) to create a computer model of the extrinsic tongue muscles. T

High-resolution venography of the brain using magnetic resonance imaging.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a non-flow related magnetic resonance imaging method to visualize small veins independent of arteries in the human brain. A long TE, high-resolution 3D gradient echo MR acquisition was used to highlight venous information. The method is based on the paramagnetic property of deoxyhemoglobin and the resulting phase difference between veins and brain parenchyma at long echo times. The MR magnitude images were masked with a phase mask filter to enhance small structure visibility. Venous information down to sub-pixel vessel diameters of several hundred micr

A real-time dynamic 3D model of the human inguinal region for surgical education.

A suitable dynamic 3D model that allows the simulation of the inguinal region with real-time performance on a personal computer was developed. A geometric model adjusted to real data was created by means of semiautomatic contour segmentation of anatomic units from the visible human project and data generated from classical anatomic information. A dynamic model included converting muscular units from their continuous geometric representation into a set of voxels and then real-time interaction and performance. The current implementation enables deformation of the realistic model associated with

Computational model of soft tissues in the human upper airway.

This paper presents a three-dimensional finite element model of the tongue and surrounding soft tissues with potential application to the study of sleep apnoea and of linguistics and speech therapy. The anatomical data was obtained from the Visible Human Project, and the underlying histological data was also extracted and incorporated into the model. Hyperelastic constitutive models were used to describe the material behaviour, and material incompressibility was accounted for. An active Hill three-element muscle model was used to represent the muscular tissue of the tongue. The neural stimulus

The effect of averaging adjacent planes for artifact reduction in matrix inversion tomosynthesis.

PURPOSE: Matrix inversion tomosynthesis (MITS) uses linear systems theory and knowledge of the imaging geometry to remove tomographic blur that is present in conventional backprojection tomosynthesis reconstructions, leaving in-plane detail rendered clearly. The use of partial-pixel interpolation during the backprojection process introduces imprecision in the MITS modeling of tomographic blur, and creates low-contrast artifacts in some MITS planes. This paper examines the use of MITS slabs, created by averaging several adjacent MITS planes, as a method for suppressing partial-pixel artifacts.

Opiate anticipation, opiate induced anatomical changes in hypocretin (Hcrt, orexin) neurons and opiate induced microglial activation are blocked by the dual Hcrt receptor antagonist suvorexant, while opiate analgesia is maintained.

We previously found that heroin addiction in humans is accompanied by an increase in the number of detected Hcrt neurons and a decrease in their soma size. We now show that the increased number of Hcrt cells visible after morphine treatment is likely the result of increased Hcrt production in neurons having sub-detection levels of the peptides. We find that morphine increases Hcrt projections to the ventral tegmental area (VTA), the level of tyrosine hydroxylase enzyme (TH) and the number of TH positive cells in VTA, with no changes in the adjacent substantia nigra. We find that the dual Hcrt

Finite element studies of the mechanical behaviour of the diaphragm in normal and pathological cases.

The diaphragm is a muscular membrane separating the abdominal and thoracic cavities, and its motion is directly linked to respiration. In this study, using data from a 59-year-old female cadaver obtained from the Visible Human Project, the diaphragm is reconstructed and, from the corresponding solid object, a shell finite element mesh is generated and used in several analyses performed with the ABAQUS 6.7 software. These analyses consider the direction of the muscle fibres and the incompressibility of the tissue. The constitutive model for the isotropic strain energy as well as the passive and

Architectural differences in the anterior and middle compartments of the pelvic floor of young-adult and postmenopausal females.

The pelvic floor guards the passage of the pelvic organs to the exterior. The near-epidemic prevalence of incontinence in women continues to generate interest in the functional anatomy of the pelvic floor. However, due to its complex architecture and poor accessibility, the classical 'dissectional' approach has been unable to come up with a satisfactory description, so that many aspects of its anatomy continue to raise debate. For this reason, we opted for a 'sectional' approach, using the Chinese Visible Human project (four females, 21-35 years) and the Visible Human Project (USA; one female,
