Fixation disparity in binocular stress.

Fixation disparity has been taken as a sign of stress on binocular vision because it is established that prism stress creates fixation disparity. This paper looks at the effect on fixation disparity of the stress caused by requiring subjects to read in inadequate illumination. It is found that the reduction in illumination does not in itself immediately change the magnitude of the fixation disparity. There is, however, an increase in the mean slope of the central part of the fixation disparity curve which suggests that when the effect of reduced illumination is added to prism stress, fixation

Effect of reading in low illumination on fixation disparity.

Fixation disparity has been shown to be produced by prism stress, and it has therefore been proposed that its presence constitutes a sign that binocular vision is under stress (decompensated heterophoria). Fixation disparity can be present in the absence of any other indication of stress, and therefore may have a physiological basis. This study investigates the effect on fixation disparity and visual discomfort of placing the visual system under a different type of stress, that of requiring the subject to read under conditions of inadequate illumination. In 50 young adults, it was found that f

Heath components of objective accommodative responses for convergence insufficiency participants compared with those with binocularly normal vision.

SIGNIFICANCE: Understanding the deficits in accommodative responses in convergence insufficiency compared with binocularly normal vision participants can guide targeted therapies to improve accommodative function. PURPOSE: The first objective is to evaluate the Heath components (defined as blur, disparity, and proximal cues that elicit accommodative responses) in convergence insufficiency participants. This is achieved by analyzing objective accommodative responses to step stimuli, assessing the pre-programmed and feedback mechanisms through peak velocity and final amplitude, respectively. Th

Deficiency of adaptive control of the binocular coordination of saccades in strabismus.

Disconjugate (different in the two eyes) oculomotor adaptation is driven by the need to maintain binocular vision. Since binocular vision is deficient in strabismus, we wondered whether oculomotor disconjugate adaptive capabilities are deficient in such subjects. We studied eight adult subjects with constant, long-standing convergent strabismus of variable angles (4-30 prism D). No subject had severe amblyopia. Binocular vision was evaluated with stereoacuity tests. Two subjects had peripheral binocular vision and gross stereopsis; two other subjects had abnormal retinal correspondence and abn

Small or far away? Size and distance perception in the praying mantis.

Stereo or '3D' vision is an important but costly process seen in several evolutionarily distinct lineages including primates, birds and insects. Many selective advantages could have led to the evolution of stereo vision, including range finding, camouflage breaking and estimation of object size. In this paper, we investigate the possibility that stereo vision enables praying mantises to estimate the size of prey by using a combination of disparity cues and angular size cues. We used a recently developed insect 3D cinema paradigm to present mantises with virtual prey having differing disparity

The Mallett Fixation Disparity Test: influence of test instructions and relationship with symptoms.

Fixation disparity is a minute ocular misalignment under conditions of binocular single vision and is typically detected in primary eye care practices in the UK using the Mallett Unit Fixation Disparity Test. This instrument creates natural viewing conditions, when the patient's binocular system is fused using both central and peripheral fusion locks. This allows the examiner to determine the minimum prism power that eliminates the fixation disparity: the associated phoria or aligning prism. The spherical power that eliminates the fixation disparity, the aligning sphere, can also be determined

The relationship between fixation disparity and heterophoria.

Twenty-five asymptomatic subjects with normal binocular vision underwent determination of the magnitude and direction of their heterophoria and their fixation disparity. Fixation disparity was measured at a 2-m fixation distance with the phase-difference haploscope under conditions simulating those of casual seeing. When combined with careful attention to symmetrical control of accommodation, this method eliminates several known technical artifacts. Examples of the normal fluctuation of the magnitude and direction of fixation disparity for individual subjects were demonstrated. Whereas only a

Understanding and simulating border ownership centered segmentation.

Border ownership is a critical component of biological vision systems, enabling object segmentation and figure-ground organization. Understanding border ownership-centered segmentation is essential for advancing vision neuroscience and computer vision. In our prior work, "Border Ownership, Category Selectivity, and Beyond" (Chen et al., 2022)6, we introduced a channel-based representation for coding border ownership and category selectivity. Building on this foundation, this paper addresses the remaining challenges in border ownership-centered segmentation. We explore binocular disparity repre

Sensitivity to Binocular Disparity is Reduced by Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

PURPOSE: The impairment of visual functions is one of the most common complaints following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Traumatic brain injury-associated visual deficits include blurred vision, reading problems, and eye strain. In addition, previous studies have found evidence that TBI can diminish early cortical visual processing, particularly for second-order stimuli. We investigated whether cortical processing of binocular disparity is also affected by mTBI. METHODS: In order to investigate the influence of mTBI on global stereopsis, we measured the quick Disparity Sensitivity Funct

Coarse scales, fine scales, and their interactions in stereo vision.

Human stereo vision can resolve remarkably small depth differences between two stimuli, but the smallest resolvable difference is usually that between stimuli located near the plane of fixation. As distance from this plane increases, so does the smallest detectable increment in disparity. We examined this loss of resolution by comparing disparity discrimination thresholds for single-scale and multi-scale stimuli as a function of the pedestal disparity. For single-scale gratings, disparity thresholds display phase constancy; thus, their spatial thresholds vary reciprocally with grating spatial

Playing stereoscopic video games enhances the precision but not the accuracy of depth perception.

Playing three-dimensional (3D) video games enhances stereo acuity (i.e., the precision of stereopsis) in young adults with normal vision Here we asked whether the improvement in stereoacuity was the result of a reduced disparity pedestal, as indicated by a decreased subjective depth bias (i.e., the accuracy of stereopsis). Twenty-one healthy young participants with normal vision and limited previous video game experience, none had played 3D video games, played first-person-shooter action stereoscopic 3D video games for a total of 40 h. Depth detection performance was measured using random dot

Meridian-Specific and Post-Optical Deficits of Spatial Vision in Human Astigmatism: Evidences From Psycho-Physical and EEG Scalings.

Previous studies have demonstrated that orientation-specific deprivation in early life can lead to neural deficits of spatial vision in certain space, and can even result in meridional amblyopia (MA). Individuals with astigmatism are the optimal and natural models for exploring this asymmetric development of spatial vision in the human visual system. This study aims to assess the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) and EEG signals along two principal meridians in participants with regular astigmatism when being optimal optical corrected. Twelve participants with astigmatism (AST group, 20 eyes

Mapping the "forbidden zone" near and away from the fixation point.

Burt and Julesz modified the classical view of Panum's fusional area by incorporating the concept of the disparity gradient. They found that an area of double vision, described as the forbidden zone for single vision, is present when the angular separation between two objects is small. However, Krol and van de Grind argued that Burt and Julesz's finding could be explained by the classical theories (specifically Ogle, 1932 JOSA 22 664-728) in which the probability for fusion is a function of peripheral angle and disparity magnitude. We examined whether a forbidden zone can be specified within O

Stereoscopic vision in the absence of the lateral occipital cortex.

Both dorsal and ventral cortical visual streams contain neurons sensitive to binocular disparities, but the two streams may underlie different aspects of stereoscopic vision. Here we investigate stereopsis in the neurological patient D.F., whose ventral stream, specifically lateral occipital cortex, has been damaged bilaterally, causing profound visual form agnosia. Despite her severe damage to cortical visual areas, we report that DF's stereo vision is strikingly unimpaired. She is better than many control observers at using binocular disparity to judge whether an isolated object appears near

Binocular visual surface perception.

Binocular disparity, the differential angular separation between pairs of image points in the two eyes, is the well-recognized basis for binocular distance perception. Without denying disparity's role in perceiving depth, we describe two perceptual phenomena, which indicate that a wider view of binocular vision is warranted. First, we show that disparity can play a critical role in two-dimensional perception by determining whether separate image fragments should be grouped as part of a single surface or segregated as parts of separate surfaces. Second, we show that stereoscopic vision is not l

The relationship between reflex eye realignment and the percept of single vision in young children.

Effective binocular vision is dependent on both motor and perceptual function. Young children undergo development of both components while interacting with their dynamic three-dimensional environment. When this development fails, eye misalignment and double vision may result. We compared the range of image disparities over which young children display reflex motor realignment of their eyes with the range over which they report a single versus double percept. In response to step changes in the disparity of a 2.2° wide stimulus, 5-year-olds generated an adult-like reflex vergence velocity tuning

The effect of training on sensitivity and stability of double fusion in Panum's limiting case.

Panum's limiting case is a phenomenon of monocular occlusion in binocular vision. This occurs when one object is occluded by the other object for one eye, but the two objects are both visible for the other eye. Although previous studies have found that vertical gradient of horizontal disparity and cue conflict are two important factors for double fusion, the effect of training on the sensitivity and stability of Panum's limiting case remains unknown. The current study trained 26 participants for 5 days with several of Panum's configurations (Gilliam, Frisby, and Wang series). The latency and d

Binocular fusion, suppression and diplopia for blurred edges.

PURPOSE: (1) To devise a model-based method for estimating the probabilities of binocular fusion, interocular suppression and diplopia from psychophysical judgements, (2) To map out the way fusion, suppression and diplopia vary with binocular disparity and blur of single edges shown to each eye, (3) To compare the binocular interactions found for edges of the same vs opposite contrast polarity. METHODS: Test images were single, horizontal, Gaussian-blurred edges, with blur B = 1-32 min arc, and vertical disparity 0-8.B, shown for 200 ms. On the typical development of stereopsis: fine and coarse processing.

Stereoscopic depth perception may be obtained from small retinal disparities that can be fused for single vision (fine stereopsis), but reliable depth information is also obtained from larger disparities that produce double vision (coarse stereopsis). While there is some evidence that stereoacuity improves with age, little is known about the development and maturation of coarse stereopsis. Here we address this gap by assessing the maturation of stereoscopic depth perception in children (4-14 years) and adults over a large range of disparities from fused (fine) to diplopic (coarse). Vertical fixation disparity in learning disabled.

In this correlation study of visual parameters as related to learning disabilities, we considered several deficits: uncorrected refractive error, accommodative infacility, inaccurate pursuits, and vertical fixation disparity. Because vision is the primary sensory input involved in reading, it is nothing new to find a correlation between visual deficits and learning problems; however, vertical fixation disparity, unique in its relation to other sensory systems, deserves a great deal of attention. The high incidence of vertical fixation disparity measured in 5th and 6th graders with learning dis
