Vision screening and eye examination of school children.

In Kuopio, Finland, vision screening for school children is done by school nurses once every 2 years. All children who have impaired vision, suspected strabismus or heterophoria, suspected eye disease or ocular discomfort, are sent for an eye examination to the ophthalmologist at the Community Health Centre, Kuopio. In 1977 the number of children referred for eye examination was 741 and 1134 in 1984. One hundred consecutive eye examinations were analysed both in 1977 and 1984. There were more girls than boys in both materials: 63 girls and 37 boys in 1977 and 60 girls and 40 boys in 1984. This

[Vision screening for children: Recommended practices from AFSOP].

In light of the international literature, a workgroup of experts from the AFSOP met in February 2019 to formulate updated recommendations for visual screening in children. An ophthalmologic examination during the first month of life is recommended for children at risk of developing infantile organic amblyopia. An ophthalmologic examination including cycloplegic refraction between 12 and 15 months of age is recommended for children at risk of developing functional amblyopia. At any age, a prompt ophthalmologic examination is recommended for a child suspected of functional or organic ocular path

Vision screening in children entering school: Eskisehir, Turkey.

PURPOSE: To report vision screening results among school children in Eskisehir, Turkey. METHODS: Vision screening was performed in 7- to 8-year-old school children in November and December 2011. Best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) assessment, cover test, and autorefractometer measurement under cycloplegia were performed. Spherical equivalent ≤-0.50 diopters (D) was considered to be myopic, while spherical equivalent >0.75 D was considered to be hypermetropic. Astigmatism was defined as a cylinder power ≥0.75 D. Regression analysis was used to determine the likelihood of having BCVA ≤0.8 Snell

Analysis of the current preschool vision screening in Denmark.

PURPOSE: To analyse the current vision screening programme for children attending school with respect to identifying children with significant refractive errors. METHODS: A total of 950 children from the municipality of Roskilde, Denmark, were invited to participate in a cross-sectional study of vision screening. 447 children aged 4.5-7 years participated in the study. The children completed a vision screening and a full eye examination. The vision screening consisted of visual acuity at distance (VA), visual acuity at distance with +2.0 glasses (VA+2), visual acuity at near (VAnear) and Lang

Vision screening with the RDE stereotest in pediatric populations.

The usefulness of the Random Dot E (RDE) stereotest in screening the vision of school-aged children for vision problems has been established. As a single screening procedure, the effectivity (phi) of the RDE (phi = +0.52) is greater than the widely used Snellen acuity technique (phi = +0.36) and faster to complete. Very-low-birthweight (VLBW) children have a higher incidence of vision problems including strabismus, amblyopia, and refractive error than children born with normal-birthweights (NBW's). My purpose was to determine: (1) whether a group of young children at high risk for vision probl

The use of isotropic photorefraction for vision screening in infants.

Isotropic photorefraction is a technique which makes possible the rapid, economic, large scale screening of infants and young children for refractive errors. The relative size of blur circles reflected from the fundus in 3 flash photographs with different camera settings allows the size and direction of refractive errors to be estimated. The method has been validated against retinoscopic measures on a large group of infants. Findings of a high incidence of astigmatism in the first year are confirmed. Detection of hypermetropia in early infancy by this screening procedure may allow preventive t

Measurement of the validity of a preschool vision screening program.

OBJECTIVES: The validity (sensitivity and specificity) of a preschool vision screening program was measured over a 3-year period to determine how well strabismus and significant refractive errors could be detected. METHODS: Public health nurses were trained to administer tests of visual acuity, stereoacuity, and ocular alignment. Failure on any test, visual acuity of 6/9 or less, stereoacuity of less than 100 seconds of arc, or an apparent misalignment of the eyes resulted in referral to an eye care practitioner. An age-matched control was also referred. Analysis of practitioner reports used

Preschool vision screening: a service in need of rationalisation.

A survey of health districts in England and Wales was carried out at the end of 1984 to ascertain among other things the range of current programmes for preschool vision screening. The response rate was 81.3%. Altogether 94% of districts reported screening for both reduced visual acuity and squint; two districts screened for neither. A great variety of different types of tests were in use and screening was carried out at a variety of different ages. A high proportion of districts were screening children for reduced visual acuity in infancy, although screening tests applicable at this age have

Testing for hypermetropia in the school vision screening programme.

The need and accuracy of a hypermetropia test, recommended as a screening test in Swedish schools, was evaluated in a series of 118 8-year-old children not wearing glasses. The distant visual acuity was determined without correction and with plus spheres of two different strengths, +1.5 D and +2.0 D respectively. When compared to the objective refraction and with an arbitrary limit of hypermetropia of +2.5 diopters, it could be shown that neither of the hypermetropia tests fulfilled the criteria of an adequate screening test. Except for two children all hypermetropics beyond +3.0 were previous

Accuracy of vision technicians in screening ocular pathology at rural vision centres of southern India.

BACKGROUND: There is paucity of data on the inter-observer agreement and diagnostic accuracy between a primary-care technician (vision technician) and an ophthalmologist. Hence, the current study was conducted to assess the accuracy of vision technicians, to screen potentially sight-threatening ocular conditions at rural vision centres of southern India and their agreement with an ophthalmologist. METHODS: In July to August 2010, patients presenting to seven vision centres in Adilabad district (Andhra Pradesh) were selected and screened in a masked manner by seven vision technicians followed

Vision Screening, Vision Disorders, and Impacts of Hyperopia in Young Children: Outcomes of the Vision in Preschoolers (VIP) and Vision in Preschoolers - Hyperopia in Preschoolers (VIP-HIP) Studies.

This review summarizes clinically relevant outcomes from the Vision in Preschoolers (VIP) and VIP-Hyperopia in Preschoolers (VIP-HIP) studies. In VIP, refraction tests (retinoscopy, Retinomax, SureSight) and Lea Symbols Visual Acuity performed best in identifying children with vision disorders. For lay screeners, Lea Symbols single, crowded visual acuity (VA) testing (VIP, 5-foot) was significantly better than linear, crowded testing (10-foot). Children unable to perform the tests (<2%) were more likely to have vision disorders than children who passed and should be referred for vision evaluat

Subjective Refraction Test Using a Smartphone for Vision Screening.

To improve access to vision care and to enable mass vision screening, a smartphone app has been developed to measure refractive errors. Without needing any external attachment, the app running on a standalone phone can be used by lay personnel to measure subjective refraction. Its validity has been pilot-tested in clinical settings and underserved communities. The app estimates the refractive error by measuring the distances of far points for discerning visual stimuli. Spherical equivalent refraction and astigmatism can be measured using Tumbling E letters and grating patterns, respectively. T

A new screening method for detecting colour vision deficiencies.

Diagnostic colour vision examinations are generally administered with the anomaloscope. But this instrument requires a lot of time and experience for the tests as well as for the interpretation of the results. In practical use, it will be sufficient in most cases to know whether normal colour vision is present or not, and it is not necessary to use sophisticated devices. So it was considered desirable during the TCU conference on colour vision defects held in London in March 1973 [1] to have a testing method for practical use which is both accurate and time saving. At the time when this demand

Combined hearing and vision screening programs: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 1.5 billion and 2.2 billion people have hearing and vision impairment, respectively. The burden of these non-communicable diseases is highest in low- and middle-income countries due to a lack of services and health professionals. The WHO has recommended universal health coverage and integrated service delivery to improve ear and eye care services. This scoping review describes the evidence for combined hearing and vision screening programs. METHOD: A keyword search of three electronic databases, namely Scopus, MEDLINE (Pub

Montreal Brain Injury Vision Screening Test for General Practitioners.

Visual disturbances are amongst the most commonly reported symptoms after a traumatic brain injury (TBI) despite vision testing being uncommon at initial clinical evaluation. TBI patients consistently present a wide range of visual complaints, including photophobia, double vision, blurred vision, and loss of vision which can detrimentally affect reading abilities, postural balance, and mobility. In most cases, especially in rural areas, visual disturbances of TBI would have to be diagnosed and assessed by primary care physicians, who lack the specialized training of optometry. Given that TBI p
